Subject: Lyr Req: 2nd verse of song 'You don't know'
From: GUEST,Anne
Date: 30 May 18 - 04:57 PM

First verse
You don't know you, you don't know
You don't know my mind (repeat lines 1 &2))
You may be thinking that I'm laughing
But I'm just trying to keep from crying

2nd verse
You've been gone (repeat)
Almost all night long
You've been gone (repeat)
Almost all night long
..what are the last two lines of this verse?

Early in the morning I got down
I went on my way (repeat 1&2)
I could hear the birds a-singing
I know there'd be a better day

Anne - your first verse is usually the chorus to the song (see the version here in the DT: You Don't Know My Mind).

I've listened to at least half a dozen versions of this from Leadbelly to Western Swing to Doc Watson to Huch Laurie(!) to Appalachian to Ella Fitzgerald and a few others and none of them have your second verse.

Do you know the source for your version?

Mick

Here's the 1923 Virginia Liston recording, which must be the original (lyrics are different from the DT): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqnCo-Aa8LM

The 1963 Ella Fitzgerald recording has exactly the same lyrics we have in the Digital Tradition, but it's very different from most other versions: YOU DON'T KNOW MY MIND (from DT)
(Virginia Liston, Samuel Gray and Clarence Williams)

I went to the racetrack, my man he won
Gave the money to another gal and wouldn't give me none

cho: You don't know, you don't know my mind.
You see me laughin', laughin' just to keep from cryin'.

I said to papa,"Can you stand to see me cry?"
He said, "gal, I can stand to see you die."

He said he didn't want me, I wasn't good enough,
I'm gonna get myself another man and call his bluff.

I'm not good lookin', I don't dress fine,
But I'm the kind of woman who will take her time.

The grass is green, and the mountains are blue,
That's not tellin' what I'm thinkin' 'bout you.

One problem with Michael Taft's blues lyrics book, Talkin' to Myself, is that the book is indexed only by the performer. There is no title index. There is an online concordance that helped me find two versions, but I can't make it identify the sources of the two versions. Anyhow, here they are:

I went to the race track : my man *on derby* won
Give the money to another gal : and wouldn't give me none

You don't know : you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing : laughing to keep from crying

I said now papa : can you stand to see me cry
He said yes woman : I could stand to see you die

Fed my daddy : with plenty of jellyroll
Pull the shoes off my feet : let me out in the cold

Going down to the river : take a rope and a rock
Tie it around my neck : and jump off the dock

Ain't no one : can change my mind
I've been mistreated : and I don't mind dying

Going to get me some poison : kill myself
Because the man I love : has put me on the shelf

If he didn't want me : he didn't have to lie
The day I see him : that's the day he'll die

Baby : you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing : I'm laughing just to keep from crying

A crooked man's worse : than crooked dice
With dice you lose your money : with your man you lose your life

I'm going to get me a razor : and a gun
Cut him if he stands still : shoot him if he runs

Here's my transcription of the Hugh Laurie recording, which I really like. I got with help from a variety of lyrics sites. Laurie says he got the song from Leadbelly.

YOU DON'T KNOW MY MIND
(from Hugh Laurie recording, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE7FHPPCCRA)

Walking down the levee with my head hangin' low
Looking for my mama but she ain't here no more
Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying

She won't cook my dinner, won't wash my clothes
Won't do nothing but walk the road
Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying

My breakfast on the table and my coffee's getting cold
And mama's in the kitchen gettin' sweet papa told (???)
Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying

Sometimes I think my baby's too good to die
Sometimes I think she should be buried alive
Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying

I wish I had a nickel, I wish I had a dime
I wish I hadn't give myself a bad woman's time (??)
Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying

Look at you mama, see what you gone and done
You got my money now you broke and run
Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying

You made me get mad and you made me get sad
The going gets tougher than you ain't never had
Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind
When you see me laughing, laughing just to keep from crying.
When you see me laughing, laughing just to keep from crying.

Annie, where did you hear the version that you're asking about? I don't find any version that's close to yours - but it's fun to explore a variety of versions.

Joe - the versions by Jimmy Martin, Tony Rice et al, JD Crowe and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (Circle Be Unbroken - I can't see the video on youtube here in uk) are a different song. That's more of a country song, sometimes known as Honey, You Don't Know My Mind. I know - I listened to all those versions too!

And as Big Al says, not Helen Shapiro - which was just "You Don't Know". A super voice from my childhood that was sadly overtaken by the advent of The Beatles and the 60s uk bands.

My thanks to the suggestions given for the lyrics to "You Don't Know My Mind" These are similar but not the song I am seeking.
Mine only had the 3 verses, was sung by a woman, and I only heard it 2 or 3 times. I sing it to myself when I'm feeling blue and 'nobody understands me' I'll keep searching.   Anne
