The June Press Room Shanty, Forebitter, and Foc's'l Ballad and Memorial Session-In-Exile will be this Saturday, June 16th from 3:30 to 7:30 at the Continental Restaurant & Bar -- just north of Dover 2 blocks from the intersection of Rtes. 108 and Rte. 9. See previous threads for address and directions.

There's plenty of FREE parking, handicapped access, lots of seating, good acoustics, Guinness on draft, and Chinese food and buffet. We're in the function room just off the bar -- turn left at the saltwater aquarium, then turn right into the function room.

This will be our traditional Memorial Session -- remembering the founder of our session, Tom Hall (Mudcat's Curmudgeon) as well as Barry Finn, David Behm (best known for his renditions of "Barrett's Privateers" and "Capital Ship"), Jay Smith who inspired the session, and Danny Spooner, Danny Macleod, and Louisa Jo Killen who joined us at The Press Room sessions when they were in the area or performing at the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival.

I really hope we'll have a good turnout to honor those singers who were such an important part of our sessions and of the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival (PMFF).

Please join us in keeping the songs they sang alive!

Hope to see you then!

Linn

Bob Webb! BOB WEBB!!! I didn't intend to overlook Bob Webb as one of the people associated with our sessions (at least during the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival) no longer with us.

See everyone Saturday!

For the record, from Ushant to Scilly, it's 38.732 leagues.

According to various other sources, Ushant to Scilly is either 34 or 45 leagues.

Of course it all gets confuzzled because a nautical league is 3.45234 miles or 3 nautical miles. On land a league is 3 miles...but the length of a mile varies by where it's being measured and by what year it was.

The crew was me (Linn, Bat Goddess), Hutch, Don Hale, Jeri, Ranger1, Charlie (Charley Noble), Gail & Jim Finn (& Gail's mother), Dianne,Mike Modern, Bill & Carol, Bill Perry, Don Young & Joann, and Raelene & Dale. And our server keeping us from dying of thirst was Annie.

I think I sang only songs that were part of Tom Hall's (Curmudgeon's) repertoire.

Hey, what happened to the Barry Finn/Finn & Haddie website?!? I used that to check titles!

And what we sang was --
1. Shake Her, Johnny, Shake Her - Linn
2. Old Zeb - Hutch
3. Stormalong Stormy - Charlie
4. Saltpetre Shanty - Don
5. Rosabella - Dianne
6. Cruising 'Round Yarmouth - Linn
7. Mollymauk - Jeri
8. The Ballad of the Headless Tuna - Charlie
9. Rowdy Soul - Hutch
10. Go to Sea Once More - Dianne
11. Rare Ones and Fair Ones - Mike Modern (Mike sang the verses he added to the song written by Vermont State Senator Dick McCormick, including the verse about Tom Hall)
12. Mariquita - Don
13. The Water Is Wide - Gail Finn
14. Banks of Sicily - Hutch
15. Katahdin Battles the Gale - Charlie
16. The Prisoner/I Wish I Had Someone to Love Me - Dianne
17. All Back Together (written by Stanley Longstaff for Jay Smith's passing) - Linn
18. The Cat Came Back - Bill Perry (for Dahlov Ipcar)
19. Outward Bound - Don
20. John Dead - Jeri
21. Paradise Street - Gail Finn
22. Dan Kate Sarah Dan McLeod - Mike Modern
23. South Australia - Jim Finn
24. Yangtze River - Charlie
25. Around the Horn (tune) - Bill Perry, mandolin; Hutch, guitar
26. West Indies Blues - Hutch
27. Bonnie Bunch of Thyme - Dianne
28. Shipmates - Don
29. Blood Red Roses - Mike Modern (learned from Richard Fariña LP. circa 1965)
30. Santiano - Linn (learned from B-side of The Highwaymen's "Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore" circa 1961)
31. Along the Bay - Hutch
32. Outside Track - Charlie
33. Sweet Marie - Gail Finn
34. Maggie May - Linn
35. Sloop John B - Bill Perry
36. Storm In the Harbor - Hutch
37. Steamboat Natchez - Charlie
38. Rubber Boots (Newfie version of "Pit Boots") - Mike Modern
39. Hey Rain - Hutch
40. Three Drunken Maidens - Linn
41. Boney Was a Warrior - Dianne
42. The Shadow Boats - Charlie
43. Paddy West - Don
44. Row, Bullies, Row - Mike Modern
45. Seaman's Hymn - Don and the Company

If I forgot anything (alas, likely yesterday) or screwed anything up, please let me know.

Linn

A fun session, as always. And now I no longer have to wonder how far it is from Ushant to Scilly! I'm sticking with 34 Leagues, per the version I usually sing ("Spanish Ladies", Roud 687). The Finn & Haddie website appears to have disappeared in one of those North East storms. However, as usual, I ended up poking around the "inter-web" for a while and found a link to the original Finn & Haddie Index of Lyrics from the "Fathom This" Recording. The links still work to access the lyrics, who knows for how much longer. Here is the link to the Index:

                   http://www.finnandhaddie.com/lyrics.php

P.S. I've never gotten my clicky to turn blue! Just cut & paste in the browser.

Finn & Haddie

Thanks, everyone, for coming!

And thanks, Don, for finding that link. I refer to it almost every month. I'm going to copy the lyrics now into a folder on my desktop just in case something untoward happens to the page.

Linn
