Subject: RE: 2018 Festivals : Feedback\Reviews From: GUEST,Orkney Folk Festival Reviewed Date: 19 Jun 18 - 05:58 AM Orkney Folk Festival 2018 Love the format of this festival which is very well organised and well run. Tickets for the various concert venues tend to be sold out early, but no real problem as the way that the "sessions" are organised the acts playing on the main stages take turns for spots in various pubs, hotels and clubs during the day so even if you haven't been lucky enough to get tickets you can still see the main acts albeit not in a "concert setting" - I hasten to add that this does not interfere with or inhibit impromptu sessions. Sessions themselves lean strongly tunes, not so many sing-arounds. Accommodation is one thing that needs to be booked early as Orkney is a popular tourist destination folk festival or no folk festival (Apparently Orcadians are the happiest people in the British Isles) For the last two years the weather has been brilliant - but there again it never rains in the pub - Ferry Inn gets my vote as the best of them. |

Subject: RE: 2018 Festivals : Feedback\Reviews From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 18 Jun 18 - 08:18 PM Thought I would jump in with my twopennorth so that the usual suspects can shoot me down. These days we are in the antipodes for the whole of December, January & February and very nice it is too thank you. When in the UK we get to the Wilsons club at the Welly in Wolviston as often as we can taking our friend and Whitby resident Mollie Grove who recently had a ninetieth birthday do at the club - one of four official birthdays! We have got into the habit of attending the Fife Singing Weekend in Falkland and then John & Many Waltham's weekend down in rural Dorset - the two were only five days apart this year. There is a thing we are involved in with others in Yorkshire in late June but that is a secret. Judy and I also run a dance weekend in early July - because we can. Later in July we head off to Cullerlie near Aberdeen for the singing weekend there. August means a week at Whitby Folk Week and after that we would normally have gone to John & Katie Howson's do in Stowmarket but they retired last year and the event seems to have disappeared despite brave words from someone who was suppose to continue the event. We both have lots of other interests as well as folk and so in the words of the proverbial - how did we ever find time to go to work? All the events we regularly attend are well run and meet our needs. We also occasionally attend other events - the latest of which was the Doc Rowe exhibition at Rochdale and what a joy that was. |
