Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: GUEST Date: 30 Jun 18 - 11:02 AM Mo, your post looks like some sort of riddle? Would you care to explain it? |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 30 Jun 18 - 07:24 AM It may also get revived by someone spamming an ad for Viagra or fitted kitchens. Are there any fatberg-shovelling shanties? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-44615693 |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Mo the caller Date: 30 Jun 18 - 02:53 AM Ah yes, suspended animation to be revived later (possibly after being brought into currency by a deleted post) by someone answering a 10 year old question without realising that a) it had been done to death up-thread b) the person who asked is probably no longer an active member |

Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: GUEST,akenaton Date: 23 Jun 18 - 05:42 AM :0)......Ah Andy, good to see that irony is not dead! Tattie... "It then becomes restricted to the same 4 people, so in that sense it dies a death too! Complete turn-off for the rest of us!" " The rest of us" should be aware that what drove the music of people like Ewan MacColl, Pete Seeger, or Woody Guthry was in the main political ideology. It is therefor imperative on a forum like this, to study that ideology in any discussion involving the performers or their output. Dylan was free from these restraints, which infuriated the ideologues like Seeger and MacColl. |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: GUEST,Andy7 Date: 22 Jun 18 - 07:26 PM It would be better for everyone if threads always stay completely on-topic, and don't meander off, as they so often do, into pointless and unrelated discussions. The surest way to achieve this would be if, rather than posting any original ideas of our own, we can all agree just to copy and paste the OP as our own contribution to any thread. |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Tattie Bogle Date: 22 Jun 18 - 07:52 AM Wrong EM, Jack. But fascinating about snollygosters. Think another JC (not yourself). |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Jack Campin Date: 22 Jun 18 - 07:28 AM The mention of "E.M." with no explanation suggested E.M. Forster, so I went off looking for a cartoon I saw in a gay magazine many years ago, which gave an anatomical diagram of the exact route followed by the sensation of being touched on the bum that leads to Maurice's brain and changes his life in Forster's eponymous book, but I didn't find it and instead followed a Google link to a 17th century engraving of someone kissing an arse as penance, but the image in question turned out to be way inside a rather large site mainly about the history of science, https://whewellsghost.wordpress.com, as a result of which I now know about the word "snollygoster". I hope that helps. |

Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: GUEST,Akenaton Date: 22 Jun 18 - 05:05 AM If a thread does not diversify and explore alternative ideas, it usually dies a very quick death. Some people seem unable or unwilling to accept that truth. For example any thread regarding E. M. naturally diversifies into a political discussion. |

Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: FreddyHeadey Date: 21 Jun 18 - 06:07 PM Threads developing like the recent Scottish music on radio & Beverley Festival I'll ignore (\try to), maybe having a quick look when they drop off the bottom of the page. And others where I know someone has dropped in a comment about Ewan McCall, especially if someone has speculated that his mother always called him James. |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: FreddyHeadey Date: 21 Jun 18 - 05:58 PM Digressaphonical wideloe is superJC. I might share it on my FB page. But FB seems to be down at the moment. Do you remember if Bill always spoke before Ben in the actual shows? |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Tattie Bogle Date: 21 Jun 18 - 05:53 PM Well if you just look at the current thread on Scottish music on radio, you have a prime example of people trying to divert the thread to other causes, and good old Bonzo trying to get people back on track. I confess to having made comments beyond the immediate call of music and toed the line thereafter, but the usual GUEST trolls have tried to bring in racism, spark a bit of flaming, etc. |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: FreddyHeadey Date: 21 Jun 18 - 05:36 PM JC there is a Google group or forum called https://groups.google.com/forum/m/?hl=en-GB#!forum/uk.rec.sheds. Is that the one or anything similar? |

Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: meself Date: 21 Jun 18 - 05:18 PM Well ... it can be frustrating when you start a thread in order to find out or discuss something specific, and your OP is immediately misread/misunderstood and by the third post you have the first salvo in some old feud that's been going on since the beginning of Mudcat, if not longer ........ |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Steve Gardham Date: 21 Jun 18 - 05:00 PM I think threads generally should stay on topic and that contributions should be relevant to the OP's title, particularly if a particular song is being discussed. It's easy enough to start a new thread if you want to stray off topic. If a thread is obviously not started to give or seek information then free-for-all is fine. I will sometimes throw in something inane/witty/rude/ridiculous if the thread is already heading that way. |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Jun 18 - 04:39 PM My ex-wife used to say that I would "prattle," but I always considered it to be part of my charm. I do confess to sometimes getting into a lengthy discussion of a song when other people are waiting to sing. My friends gently remind me.... Going off track is a natural thing in human interaction. In many cases, it makes the interaction richer. Other times, it can be deadly. But attempts to steer the conversation or singing or whatever, can be even deadlier. Our usual practice here is to allow discussions to be quite wide-ranging, and I think that's generally healthy. I sure don't like it when people try to control a thread and direct people to start new threads on subtopics that are clearly related to the original topic of discussion. And for the most part, we don't allow multiple threads on the same topic to be running at the same time. It gets too confusing. -Joe, prattlingly- |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: FreddyHeadey Date: 21 Jun 18 - 09:48 AM I find nothing wrong with being reminded (say) of another song with a similar phrase, or another Folk Festival. But I get very confused when, in a thread titled "song\festival A", the posts start to talk only about "song\festival B". I'd prefer a link to a separate thread (sometimes already in existence)where those points can be made. That way the conversation can carry on with the advantage that anyone dropping in on the thread for "song\festival B" in the future will be able to see what has been said about it. |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Mo the caller Date: 21 Jun 18 - 09:16 AM I've seen interesting sequences of songs performed at festivals with the 'row of singers on the stage - one song each' format. Johnny Collins, Fred Wedlock +?+? at Bromyard come to mind. Never mind the owls, I remember one Bromyard we couldn't hear the singers because of the wind in the rigging (we moved out of the marquee into the cricket (rugby?) club). Jack gets the prize though |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: GUEST,Ebor Fiddler Date: 21 Jun 18 - 09:03 AM As I was about to say - I never compete when Owls are singing. |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Stilly River Sage Date: 21 Jun 18 - 08:38 AM That's a logical progression, Mo. And that's why so many interesting songs are performed at hoots. |
Subject: RE: Is it off-topic or conversation From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 21 Jun 18 - 08:25 AM I inow one regular here used to be a poster on uk.rec.sheds, and for all I know still is. Is that still going in any form? |
Subject: Is it off-topic or conversation From: Mo the caller Date: 21 Jun 18 - 08:18 AM Some people seem to get very irate when others go where the conversation takes them. So what's wrong with being reminded (say) of another song with a similar phrase, or another Folk Festival? It may not answer the original question, though that has often been answered already. And sometimes threads are not started to seek information anyway. I've had many conversation where one of us ends up saying 'how did we get onto that?' Do you think Mudcat threads should be different. |
