Subject: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: John in Brisbane Date: 22 Dec 99 - 08:11 PM Been meaning to do this for a while so here goes'
HOW TO MAKE A PICTURE FILE COPY OF A NOTEWORTHY SCORE
This works perfectly with the Registered version - don't know about the Un-registered. With the Score open, select File/Print Preview/Copy. You then have three choices to copy to Clipboard (you can then paste to Word or similar) or to create a .bmp or .wmf file. You can then use a graphics editor (I like LongView) to change the graphics file to (say) a .gif file to obtain a much more compact format. This process copies only one page of the score at a time. To copy the next page of the NWC score press NEXT in the Print Preview page and repeat the process.
HOW TO CREATE A HARMONY OF THIRDS FOR AN EXISTING MELODY LINE
This is so deliciously easy to do, and will give a very satisfying simple harmony for (dare I say it?) most folk songs and dance tunes that have a single melody line. It tends to either work well, or give very obvious disharmony.
Create a new blank stave in order to post a copy of the melody line. Select STAFF/NEW STAFF. Then scroll to the melody line you wish to harmonise. Press the Left mose button and highlight all the notes in the melody line, then select EDIT/COPY from the toolbar.
Next you copy the melody line to the new staff you created earlier. Scroll down until you select the new staff without any music notes in it. Select EDIT/PASTE from the toolbar. The new staff won't have a CLEF or KEY SIGNATURE, so go to the INSERT tool to add these as appropriate.
NOW for the nitty gritty part. Making certain that you are still on the staff that has the copy of the melody line, press the left mouse button and highlight all the notes in the melody line. (You can get cleverer later and highlight just part of the score, say the chorus). Depress the SHIFT and CTRL keys at the same time also pressing the UP ARROW twice. The job is now done! Play the new score by pressing F5 or the PLAY Icon.
While the instructions may appear daunting, the whole process only takes a minute. Please note that this is quite a different process to transposing the tune. In the process described above the notes in C Major Scale would go from C to E, D to F, E to G etc. While NoteWorthy can transpose very easily, the transposition function will NOT create the harmony of Thirds.
Please give this a try: if I've made any barneys please let me know! Regards, John |

Subject: RE: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Dec 99 - 08:46 PM Now this sounds like something I could use.
I spent so many hours of wrestling with Noteworthy that I'm scared to go back to use it again, because I can't remember how I managed to wrestle it into doing what I wanted last time.
Now I'll have another go. |

Subject: RE: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: John in Brisbane Date: 22 Dec 99 - 08:56 PM Kevin, I don't use it for everything, but it is still exceptional value for money, and I'm sure that it has useful functions that I don't know about. I really wrestled with the harmony bit until it finally hit me like a blinding light. Some would attribute this to my higher power.
Stick at it! There are lots of experienced users at Mudcat now. Regards, John |

Subject: RE: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: Margo Date: 22 Dec 99 - 09:16 PM Barneys? If you've made any Barneys? Now that's one I haven't heard. I presume it means an error? John, I always love your Noteworthty tips. Yes, when I read your description of the process, I too was hit by the realization, thinking "Well, of COURSE!!!" Hey, this is great, since I like to write harmonies! I also find the Noteworthy composer program to be well worth the money. Margo |

Subject: RE: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: John in Brisbane Date: 22 Dec 99 - 09:44 PM Hi Margo, to quote a colleague I just asked about the derivation of the word 'barney', "It's been around since before JC played full-back for Jerusalem". It has two vaguely similar contexts, the first meaning a minor melee (overheated emotions) e.g. "I was discussing politics with Margo and we had a real barney". Otherwise it means to make a mistake or (less often) to tell a deliberate small lie, "He tried to tell us that he wasn't on the turps (booze) last nignt, but I know he was just telling a barney".
I assume that it's Irish, but I have no idea. It certainly pre-dates Hanna-Barbera.

Subject: RE: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: Tiger Date: 23 Dec 99 - 06:14 AM John.... Your print score routine works fine with the unregistered version, with the added advantage that the composer's name comes thru unscathed and the 'printed by unregistered version' labels are gone. Quality is weak however, since you're stuck with the original screen resolution. I'm gonna try that harmony trick - will report back later.

Subject: RE: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: Steve Parkes Date: 23 Dec 99 - 09:02 AM The graphic copy is useful if you want to print out a song with the first verse under the staves, and the other verses listed separately below. Copy the image into Word, say, and type the rest of the words underneath. You can have fun matching the font sizes and faces. Not! Steve |

Subject: RE: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: GUEST,Mbo Date: 24 Jan 00 - 12:51 PM John--can Noteworthy Compsoer create MIDI files of scores? If you have Noteworthy player, can you use that to create a MIDI from a score? BTW anyone know a Mr.Chuffy? --Mbo |

Subject: RE: Tips For NoteWorthy Composer From: MMario Date: 24 Jan 00 - 01:14 PM Mbo - yes. In NWC to create a midi file from your score all you do is "save as" and choose midi rather then noteworthy. Now if they would just get it to IMPORT abc... MMario |
