Just realised, to introduce a bit of levity amidst the tension, we need International Rescue. Thunderbirds are go would be a welcome phrase:-)

Oh Nigel, that is good news! It gives hope that they'll press on with the remaining six today.
My thoughts are with their poor families. They must have been going through absolute hell these past weeks.

Yes Eliza,
But time is limited today. They are on a time zone of UTC+7, so it is already early evening there.

Does it need to be daylight Nigel? As they're underground, and when brought out they go straight into an ambulance, would it matter if it was dark outside?
(Plaintive voice of hope!)

When this is over, the local powers-that-be would be well advised to mount some sort of grille at the entrance to these tunnels/caves, to prevent anyone else getting into a dangerous situation therein. It could be unlocked with permission from the authorities, for experienced divers/geologists etc to enter.

Oh isn't that wonderful?!!!! Their families must be ecstatic. And apparently there are no serious health problems, just some infections and the need to wear sunglasses until their eyes become accustomed to the daylight.

I feel like dancing with relief and joy!

Thank the Lord! (and those brave divers, the pumping team, the numerous crews involved etc)

And let's not forget the diver who died, Saman Kunan. RIP.

Mudcatter mg got her wish, by the way.
The latest update from CNN news has a quote,
not from the "Governor",
but from Thai Health Ministry Secretary.

Now, with all the victims rescued from underground
and admitted to -- I believe -- the same hospital,
the Health Secretary is the one who visits the hospital in person
and gives updates on the recoveries of all the children.

So far, there are two diagnoses of pneumonia.
The children are in an isolation ward.
Their families are forbidden to give them bodily-contact hugs,
although in some cases, certain children are deemed strong enough
to have their families in the very same room with them.
For the rest, there is a glass wall between the children and the family,
and they use a telephone to talk to each other through the glass.

The Prime Minister General of Thailand has also visited.

At most recent report,
there were still people underground --
members of the rescue team, whose role was
to see the last of the victims out of those caves.

Now it is the rescuers' turn to be rescued.

i hope there are non-exploitative ways for the Thai people to benefit from this. i am all for (appropriately permitted) movies, books, with profits being distributed fairly. hope some good lawyers are being rounded up now or people will be exploited..and there are politics going on right now on governance of the area...and i hope they do have a tourist center and museum...and use proceeds for perhaps soccer for the poorest girls and boys..or schools in the hill country..there have to be safeguards in place..including ones that are pretty standard in us at least...i do not question why coach took boys on excursion..although some say boys went in and coach went to look for them...but one adult with one or more youngsters is a big no no nowadays...and good for elon musk...we can use that rescue sub where i live..they are frequently pulling boys (always boys) out of riptides here...so it has not gone to waste at all.

many many important lessons to be learned from this..one is to raise tough kids with many practical skills...

Wasn't it lovely of Manchester United to invite the whole group to come and visit them? I bet the lads will be thrilled, and maybe make the journey once the season starts in the autumn.

It would be super if each ManU team player could have a Thai boy walk beside him onto the pitch at the start of the game.

Um, I'm happy the boys are out, and I kept an eye on the progress of the rescue. But what actually happened is that 12 foolish and disobedient boys did something dangerous that led to the death of a rescuer.

No one has talked about this much, but I am sure the boys were expected to come home from practice, not to go into a cave during the rainy season. Young as they are, they should not be castigated, but they should not be treated like heroes, either.

Needless to say they all are now safe in the hospital.

The kids were invited as VIPs to the world cup but the hospital squashed the offer.
You would think the kids are fed up with following authority figures by now.

They will not be the first or last teens/preteens to do something stupid. But surely it is a cause for celebration that a huge international effort managed an astounding feat to get all the boys out, and also that the brave Thai seal that drowned is mourned for his supreme sacrifice.
Some reports say that to go into an inner cave and mark the wall was a rite of passage. Their attempt was too late in the season and the rains caught them out.
Other reports say the boys were given a strong tranquilizer to prevent panic attacks, prior to their extrication
I suspect the positive outcome of the rescue has given first reaponders a few more techniques to adopt to save further lives.
I wonder if western kids, with a very different lifestyle, would have coped as admirably as these young boys?

I haven't heard how they ended up in the cave, but as Steve noted, their coach was with them. I suspect they didn't realize how fast the water was going to rise, or how trapped they'd be when it did.

I can understand a boys football team exploring and getting lost in a cave,
but how did they get their coach down there...???

Even a minibus would have been far too big...!!!???

Ok, serious - as a mark of respect for the diver who perished saving them,
it would be a real good gesture if at least one of these boys
grows up to join the military diving team...

Latest account I read said that the boys told their parents they were going to practice and went into the cave instead. The coach followed, trying to get them out.

I think it was a good idea to keep the parents a distance away from the rescued boys for a while - let emotions cool.

I see now that the boys have been made monks, had their heads shaved and are going into a monastery for a time (all except one, who is a Christian) This is quite normal for boys in Thailand of course. But it would have been nice if they could have had more time with their families, and a little holiday or rest after their ordeal.

Apparently, almost all boys in Thailand spend some time as Buddhist monks. These boys will spend a matter of weeks as monks, not a lifetime.
A newspaper story I read, said that the boys went into the cave, and the coach reluctantly followed them. My conclusion is that the boys went into the cave because kids will be kids. The coach followed in an attempt to ensure their safety, but that did not work very well.
But now, they are safe, and there is no reason to judge anyone.

That's quite right Joe, It's going to be for a short time only, a few weeks I expect. And their parents said that while there, the boys would be be praying for the diver who died, which is lovely.

It occurred to me it might be a good way for them to come to terms with their terrifying experience in the calm atmosphere of the monastery. They must be completely traumatised, and need psychological 'downtime' to heal, I'm sure.

Earlier the news reported that all the boys had been given anti-anxiety medication before they were 'shepherded' out of the cave. Tonight's news said they were all given ketamine and were unconscious but breathing. The concern being I suppose that a conscious kid panicking under water would be likely not to survive and of course hazard the life of the divers with him. But tonight's news said each boy was unconscious and had a full breathing mask tightly sealed over his face. One kid began to wake up and was re-injected by his accompanying diver.

Interesting.

The Australian anaesthetist/diver Richard Harris, who gave the boys ketamine, said later to journalists that he had been very afraid of the possible effects of the drug on weakened, underfed young lads, but that he reckoned it would have been the only way to prevent panics and disastrous struggles during the rescue process.

He's since been honoured in his country with the Order of Australia for his bravery.
