There are a number of versions of this tune,including a Sliabh Luachra Variant, the two part version is better IMO, it is on www.session.org contributed by the much missed Bannerman, this version if played slowly has so much sadness and is bitter sweet, and is IMO more pleasurable than the three part Sliabh Luachra variant, What are other peoples opinions?

I'm inclined to agree that Tell Her I Am sounds nicer played at a medium-slow tempo. Although I like the version posted by Bannerman I don't actually like the low F#s, and so would be inclined to leave them out.

I'm pretty sure that, like me you won't like this (click) version!

Not sure why the thread title was amended (Joe?), this discussion is not about the Sliabh Luachra variant but hte one that came with this comment (on thesession.org):

'Maybe it’s because I learn’t it from O’Neill’s but I much prefer the 2 part version notated there - it was also recorded by the Northern trad group (fogotten their name but Pat McCabe played piano box with them) back in the early eighties as a two part jig and sounded brilliant. The setting is as follows:-

Not sure I have danced to either version. If I have it was faster.
And, sure doesn't the tune change from jig to polka and maybe hornpipe for each figure of the dance.

What memories.
Pat O'Shaughnessy and his Men of Shamrock, such a tragic end!

And who can forget the gay happy farmer lending his rustic charm and knowledge to distressed young maidens.

As for Hamish McPukes singing the Scottish mouth music on the mouth -what can one say. I hope there is a suitable memorial to his sad demise on the corner of Sauchihall St.

These incomparable artists will live forever in my memory!!

Hello Jim.
Funnily enough I've always wondered who the band were. I have the original LP and the notes don't mention anything about musicians or other people.
I think they are a good band as well. I had a suspicion at one time it might have been a group of studio, or maybe BBC musicians but they seem to be too true to the music for that. It will be interesting to see if anyone comes up with an answer.
Unfortunatly the field recordist, Ludvig Von Zellers is no longer with us, so we can't pursue that line of enquiry.

The only clues on the record itself are the track credits. Which are-
as written (Sellars-Fisher) (Mecolico).
And at the bottom of the label- Music directed by Ron Goodwin.
Its a 10 inch 33 and a third 'Long Playing Record'
All the rage in them days.

You are right Roger- far too tight (!) for a studio band- I can only guess but if you like this style of playing and you've not come across them, have a listen tto the Eamonn Ceannt band -youtube- recordings very hard to find...

Hello Dick- I prefer the two part version as well, just as performed by Pat O'Shaughnessy & his Men of Shamrock- a great band who obviously knew just what they were doing- Peter Sellers just did the vocals, of course, possibly apart from the explosive sound effects at the end?

A bit of humour in the music never did any harm- we could do with a bit more of it in these dark times IMHO

I caused a bit of a stoushie a few days ago so I can’t possibly comment on Mr Sandman’s post.
However, Jim, a couple of the Eamonn Ceannt Band albums are available on Amazon.
I have’nt listened properly to them yet, but they sound as if they should be good.

This reminds me of a time I was away fishing in a little place called Loch Gowna in County Cavan about 30 years ago. I was sat in the bar with Country and Irish playing on the music machine, and I asked what was going on in the back room. The boss said ‘ oh you don’t want to go in there, it’s just some auld music’. Well. It was bloody wonderful!!
Thank the Lord that a lot of it has been saved.

By the way, do you know how Ceannt should be pronounced. I think,maybe, it just comes out as Kent.
I had a girlfriend from Kentstown near Navan many years ago, but that’s another story.
