Cut 'n' pasted from the Kingston Trio lyric page :
GLORIOUS KINGDOM
Bob Shane/Nick Reynolds/John Stewart

The Virgin Mary had a baby boy (repeat twice)
And they say that His name was Jesus.

Chorus:
(He come down) He come from the glory. (He come down) He come from the glorious a-Kingdom. (Repeat)
Oh, yes, believe us. Oh, yes, believe us. Oh, yes, believe us.
He come from the glorious Kingdom.

Was born in a town called Bethlehem. (repeat twice)
And they say that His name was Jesus.

(Chorus)

Was sent to us from Our Father above. (repeat twice)
And they say that His name was Jesus.

(Chorus)

Enjoy
RtS

I think I can get my hands on some sheet music if you need it. Let me know - but it would have to be next week. I check in to the Mudcat at work and I won't be back until the 29th. I could fax it to you. The group I perform with does the song and one of our members found it in an old Kingston Trio songbook. My understanding is that it was originally a calypso song.

By the way - we sang it in church last week. Most folks enjoyed the song but there was one lady - sure enough in the front row - who just glared at us hatefully the whole time. I don't think she likes percussion instruments in services. We had a good laugh about it later. You can't please everyone.

WHAT were you doing singing a CHRISTMAS hymn during ADVENT ?

More seriously: what sort of percussion did you use ?

My favorite version of this fine song is done by The Chad Mitchell Trio on at least one theit many albums.

I'm pretty sure it's called a cabasa. A barrel shape with beads wrapped around it that are rubbed back and forth across a corrigated metal surface. It's good for train sounds too. We almost used a conga too.

As far as the timing of the song, our musical director { and banjo player } is a professor of theology and a Harvard grad. I try not to argue with him about such matters. Better just to suit up and show up as they say. How does someone join the Liturgical Police? Does it pay well or is it a volunteer position? :)

"The Liturgical Police" above was myself wearing a funny hat. Some friends of mine, years ago, invented the Liturgical Police. It is a joke-concept which, to my observation, serves two functions: (1) A lighthearted way of poking fun, without actually being insulting, at people who are a little too strict about rubrics; and (2) when one does abide by the rubrics (which sometimes actually make sense), feigning a fear of the Liturgical Police provides a way of being serious about correct procedure while retaining a touch of good humor. (Perhaps your musical director accomplishes the same end by being a banjo player? Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Maybe the lady's disapproval could be assuaged by a scripture citation ? The 150th Psalm (among others) approves of the use of cymbals and tambourines in worship. Your cabasa sounds like it would stretch the meaning of those words a bit, but perhaps it could be considered a sort of combined timbrel-and-cymbal.

T.

T - Our banjo playing professor - David - has written some nice melodies to go along with several of the psalms. I'll recommend the 150th for his next one. He is picky about some liturgical matters - just not this one.

As far as assuaging the lady's disapproval - 1 out of about 2,500 ain't bad. We'll bear up under the strain of her evil eye.

Let me know if The Liturical Police is ever looking for members south of the Red river. We Methodists won't need any but there are some other denominations in the area that may need them desperately.

Our boss just cut us loose - have a great Christmas. May you all have fresh strings, a straight neck, a clear voice and an appreciative audience.

If possible I'd love a copy of that music. Thank you I'll be in touch next week. As for the liturgical cop I thought his timeing was odd too. I'm actually thinking about this for a recording project ,obviously for next year.

Happy Holidays
