Subject: Get ready for the 2018 FSGW Getaway! From: Nancy King Date: 16 May 18 - 01:55 PM Planning for the Folklore Society of Greater Washington's 2018 Getaway Weekend is underway! This is a great gathering of dedicated folkies from all over the US and beyond -- and we'd love to have you join us! The date for this year's weekend is October 12-15 -- a bit later than it's been for the last several years. We'll gather at the West River Conference Center, on the Chesapeake Bay, and settle in for a marathon of informal workshops, singing, playing, jamming, and all-around good times. We always try to tailor our program to the tastes of those attending, so we'd welcome your ideas. You can post them here, or email me at nlking2(at)verizon.net. If you'd like more information about the Getaway, go to www.fsgw.org, click on "annual events," and then on "Getaway." Do let us know if you can come, and send us your program ideas! The Getaway is all about participation, so start participating now! --Nancy |

If you can get Dick Swain to come, would love to try again for a Great Lakes Maritime session - know there are other folks who sing from this region as well. Joanne in Cleveland |

From: Nancy King Date: 18 May 18 - 11:46 PM Registration should open in mid-June, with application form in the July-August FSGW Newsletter, and on the FSGW website. Looking forward to seeing you, Joe! Can't make any promises regarding foliage -- there are a few things beyond our control -- but it just might be very nice indeed! Hope you can make it, Joanne! And for those of you still trying to decide whether to join us, here's our list (in no particular order) of invited guests for this year: The incomparable BRYAN BOWERS will bring his autoharp, guitar, songs, and stories; DAN and BONNIE MILNER -- he's an expert on traditional Irish music, and she's a member of the Johnson Girls quartet, so knows all about sea songs; BILL DESTLER, with his beautiful tenor and a lot of banjo expertise; JON PICKOW, son of Jean Ritchie, bringing lots of family songs and lore; Blues singers RESA GIBBS and JACKIE MERRITT promise great songs and blues technique; MELANIE RICE PENLAND and DONNA RAY NORTON (the daughter and cousin of Sheila Kay Adams) will bring us traditional Appalachian songs and stories; AND -- to top it all off -- the fabulous SALLY ROGERS will be with us again! Come one, come all! |

It's gotten rather complicated, but we should be able to work it out in a few days. Looking forward to seeing you all!! --Nancy |
