It was like an early Spring or late autumn day in our office today with AC set for 24C. How people can work without it in the current heat is quite beyond me!!

We went to Tesco's this afternoon and they had air conditioning. It was freezing in there and one of the staff (we know them all) was wearing a thick fleece.
But it was nice for a short time to have some coolness. I felt quite energetic (but I didn't do The Floss)

The US uses more power for its air conditioning than the whole of Africa uses for all of its electrical needs. On top of that, air con pumps hot air out into the environment, making large cities up to two degrees C hotter. And if the HFC used by air con accidentally leaks out, which it frequently does, it's far more potent than any of the other usual greenhouse gas suspects. So contemplate that next time you think your local Sainsbury's is a bit chilly, Bonzo. Your shivers are going to kill the planet, including you and yours.

For the last two weeks, it's been about 100o fahrenheit (37.7o C) here in the Sierra foothills of California. We have a couple of window air conditioners, no central cooling. Our big black Labrador and I camp out in my office by the air conditioner, and it helps. But the rest of the house is very warm, and outside is hell.

When I was in W Africa, and staying in a hotel (for example in Labadi Beach hotel in Accra, Ghana) I turned off the air con in my room, and never used it, even though the humidity was very high (rainy season) a bit like a sauna.

The reason was that one becomes too accustomed to the coolness, and the heat outside hits one like a blast. I found it better to suffer for a day or two, then my body began to acclimatise itself, and I got used to the temperature.

In Senegal, the 'campement' had no electricity at all, so no air con. But again, after a time, I got used to the heat (dry heat this time!)

Many years ago my poor husband waited five hours inside the British Embassy in Accra for his name to be called to collect his Visa for UK. The air con was fierce and it was like sitting in a fridge. He was shaking with cold (only had on his traditional thin cotton costume) and nearly passed out!

I hate air-con except in the car. I've encountered it mainly in hotels in Europe where I found it difficult to sleep at night for the sound of it working. I got round it eventually by keeping it on during the day while I was out, and switching it off at bedtime.

Our house is reasonably cool at the moment, even though it's around 25c-29c on some days. Shorts, T-shirt and bare feet help!

If one has a serviceable mosquito net in the Tropics, one can leave the window/s open at night. Most windows have screening or bars on them anyway. A single cotton sheet is the only covering needed (or nothing at all!) No need for air con.

The only thing I was careful about was not getting sunburnt - very dodgy for a white person.

At the moment I'm working in a nice cool semi-basement office in a Georgian building in beautiful Park Square in Leeds. No air conditioning and it's hot outside. Every year I do holiday cover for my friend who's the Creative Director here while he spends two weeks sunning himself in Greece. I enjoy the change of scene and working with old colleagues and then I can go back into retirement for the rest of the year with a few extra grand in my pocket.

Been told not to use the AC in my car, pending repair of a small crack in my windscreen: the cold air could make the crack worse, they say. So driving around with windows open, and just wondering when the company that my insurers have appointed will actually get around to contacting me: one text last Thursday (6 days ago) said "we shall contact you shortly"!

37 sounds like what Environment Canada calls a Humidex reading: an estimate of what the heat feels like in combination with the humidity. I try to ignore it, as it usually makes me feel worse about the heat, which typically does me in.

Air-conditioning makes housework easier at the height of an Ontario summer. One of my more socially awkward moments was making strawberry jam in my underwear when the doorbell rang -- enumerators taking names for the voters' list. Fortunately, I was wearing a neck-to-knees apron (jam spatters are no joke), but I had to keek around the edge of the door to save their blushes.

In the absence of air-conditioning, every bedroom needs a ceiling fan. Take a cold shower at bedtime and, still a bit damp, lie down on top of the bed under the fan ... Ahhh.

We've spent many a summer's week in a remote cortijo in inland Andalucía in recent years. The day temperature routinely goes above 35C, often 40, and doesn't fall below 26 or 27C at night. There's little breeze and there's no air conditioning. Mrs Steve is a bit more discreet than me, but I sleep on top of the bed bollock naked with a large electric fan about two feet from my arse. I sleep like a top! Down, girls!

(Actually, not a pretty sight at all, as I'm sure I don't need to tell you...)

Ooooh Steve! What an image that conjures up!!! hee hee!

I've always slept well in Africa. I somehow feel I'm 'home' - I must have African genes or something.
I've never used an electric fan though. I like complete silence during the night and wouldn't like the humming noise.

I once stayed at a 'pension' in Dakar, Senegal. The two ladies who ran it made a great show of plugging in a huge fan, and I politely said I didn't want or need it, the 'moustiquaire' was sufficient.

They were amazed and said that surely a Toubabe (white person) would need a fan? (There were huge cockroaches in the shower too, but I've never minded those)
I reckon the ladies were rather disappointed, and were expecting a spoiled princess from the UK, instead of a rough-and-ready unrefined traveller like me!

A noisy fan doesn't bother me. Neither does daylight and we never, ever close our curtains. I need airflow! We always take a plug-in mozzie repellent or two if we go to Europe in summer, the type that takes solid tablets. They work!

25C in still air is a bit hot for sleeping, Bonzo. Aircon doesn't just adjust the temperature - it also lowers humidity.

Sorry if im too overheated to read previous posts here...

But what bugs me is under UK law we are apparently not allowed to have power point sockets for fans
[or any other useful electrical appliance]
in our bathrooms..

Piddly little 2 pin shaver sockets don't count for this rant...

Yet we are perfectly at liberty to trail long trip hazard extension leads across the stairs and landing,
and around the bathroom door
to a convenient location near the bog...??????

This is a prime example of anti common sense WC gone mad...!!!!!

Hi

It has been announced on BBC TV that the temperature at London Heathrow Met Office was 35 .

Here at home it's a little cooler than that....I'd guess 27. But in the last hour it has gone very humid, We don't have AC but we do have a couple of very good fans. Not needed to use them for many years now.

We have slept on top of the bed but I have found sleeping difficult, Now now not THAT....I am 82!! lol

Now when I find it difficult to sleep out comes my Kindle and out goes my Good lady.

I am reading a Mai Hannah novel. She is new to me not read enough yet to comment.

Cheers

36 here today. A team of poor blokes was tarmacking the huge car-park at Tesco's, and looked as if they were about to collapse. Inside the store, three elderly ladies were being seen to by the first-aiders - they were obviously overcome by the heat. It was cooler in there, but outside the sun was extremely fierce.

We have had rumblings of thunder all evening so far, and lightning, but not a single drop of rain. I told my husband that if we got some appreciable rain, I'd take off all my clothes and do a mad dance (maybe The Floss) in our front garden.
You may see me on the News later...

The App Store has an excellent app that captures lightning without your having to guess when the next strike will be or waste a ton of megabytes on videos. You point your phone at the sky and leave it to it. It's called iLightningCam.

Heat is the meteorlogical #1 killer
Lightning is less than 1% in comparison
Americans would be surprised that a single heat wave event in France killed over 25,000

Firenados are currently sweeping through California in the 111F heat.

Apparently Tibenham is S Norfolk, Bonzo - other side to Cromer (which is near me). I think PussyCat in particular could have done with air conditioning here today. He spent most of the day under a chair in the living room - close to the opened sliding door and I guess as cool as spot as you would find in the house - fan in my room doesn't seem to be making much difference. He's outside now though, came down with me when I went to water the greenhouses and stayed out with Pip.

We did better than that but I don’t believe we had the predicted downpour. Up to going to bed between 1 and 2 am, there was a lot of thunder around the area but it didn’t come with torrential rain. Still, it does feel cooler and fresher outside.

The room temperatures were all around 26C this morning but at least there is some cooler air to let into the house now – in fact looking again at the heating controller (we can add heat per room but not subtract), the rooms are down to 22/23C now.

Hi

Here in Cheshire there has been no rain since early May.

But early this morning the clouds opened and we has torrential rain...but it lasted only a couple of minutes.

Sen you post today reminds me of being in Mexican Restaurant. There had been a long drought there and as we were being served there was an almighty clap of thunder and torrential rain. The waiters put down our plates and ran out int the road with their tongues out. The storm lasted a couple of hours. We were asked to stay until the rain stopped. We all had a huge party.....on the house.

Cheers

Mike

What a lovely memory Mike! It was lovely to hear all the whoops of sheer joy from all our neighbours, dancing in the dark under the deluge!

This drought has made us realise how fortunate we (normally!) are, having regular rainfall most years. I'll never complain again that it's raining when we want to go out.

It's very windy here too today Bonzo. I'm getting tons of washing dry - there aren't any clouds in the sky today. Hope this isn't starting all over again...

Currently, the planet Mercury is in retrograde motion.
It happens two or three times year upon year.

The astrological warning is not to mess about with electricity or electronics
when the planet Mercury, which rules electricity, is out of phase.

One of the public computer workstations where I stay internet-connected,
having no computer of my own,
is in a shop built like a warehouse,
which sells office supplies and does copying and printing.
(As opposed to a public library computer station.)

The other day, I walked in during hours
to rent some computer time.
I asked why all the overhead lights were out.
The nice staffperson explained that
the air-conditioning went down,
and when the repairmen came to make the repairs,
they darned near electrocuted themselves while she was watching.
So they settled for getting the refrigerated air blowing again
with no overhead lighting,
because that way nobody would get any electric shocks
while they were doing what they had to do
to get EVERYTHING running again.

Today, I am back at that same post,
(renting computer time)
and nobody has been electrocuted
and everything is running as one expects it to. Sort of.

Actually the refrigerated air
has some sort of ... oh, I give up.
They have the central air going into some kind of portable thingy
that sits on the floor with a huge whatchamacallit
connecting from the ceiling to the floor.
I don't know what the darned things are called. Sigh.

There has been a meme going around on facebook -- a portrait of Mr. Willis Carrier with an appreciation of his inventing the Air Conditioner. inventor of air conditioning 1902

I have also seen statements that credit the airconditioner for destroying the former traditions of evening front porch sitting, neighbors strolling in the cool of the day, iced tea sipping and the bonds and connections gained from such activities.
