Subject: Lyr Req: Angola Bound - Angola Prisoners' Blues
From: GUEST,Lorenzo V
Date: 30 Jul 18 - 04:11 AM

Hello everyone,

I'm working hard trying to transcribe track number 8 of the CD Angola Prisoners' Blues, titled 'Angola Bound', sung by 'A Cappella Group' - name of performers unknown.
The entire CD can be easily found online on Youtube (track 8 starts around 29:18) or, for a better quality, on Spotify. The Spotify version has a very clean sound, but the more I struggle to catch some crucial words, the less I understand them.

Here's where I got so far. I added verse numbers every 5 to help you refer to a certain line, the sign [..] where I'm clearly missing something, and words in (round parentheses) where I'm not so sure if I got it right.

ANGOLA BOUND

Oh so many mornings I got to wake up soon
Oh I got to eat my breakfast by the light of the moon
Oh by the light of the moon
Oh so many morning by the ding dong ding
5 Oh I go to the mass hall buddy I get the same old thing
Oh well the same old thing
Lord the sun is shining well the clouds’ gone gray
Boss Charlie hollering coming 'bout my way
   Oh coming 'bout my way
10 Oh captain captain do not call my name
Woh I got a brother down in Georgia with a ball and chain
   With a ball and chain
Oh Lord I’ll [be] coming when the plow get [..]
So many years laying water [..] just rolling hard
15 Oh just rolling hard
Give my woman so many [..] dollars she broke an apron string
Christmas and for [..] she never send me a doggone thing
   Oh not a doggone thing
People on the levee building mountains hollering gee woh gee
20 All this drivers down on this [..] trying to kill poor me
Oh trying to kill poor me
Marley and Sally lay sitting in the shade
Wondering how many days I’ve made
Oh how many days I’ve made
25 Oh the jurors must have found me guilty while you wrote it down
Soon in the morning you’re Angola bound
   Oh Angola bound
Go alhead mother don’t worry over me
Pray to the good Lord mother that your son goes free
30 Oh that your son go free
Oh [..] trouble day when they gave me my time
Oh well I come to the [..] and I hit that big long line
Oh hit that big long line
Oh oh well (Boe?) left Memphis with a hundred men
35 Oh when she got to Angola she didn’t have but ten
Well she didn’t have but ten
Go alhead young man don’t follow me
You got a year son and I got H.B.C.
Oh I got H.B.C. // (could they answer A.B.C. instead? Angola Bound Convict?)
40 Oh I’m trying to [get] pardon, boy, last summer, was a governor deal
Oh he denied one of the good lil’ kid[s]
One of the good lil’ kid[s]
[Sun going down, let’s pick em up, let’s go.]

Thank you very much for any insight you could share on the missing words, or corrections that you may suggest. Also, anybody has any idea about what H.B.C. or A.B.C. could stand for in this context? As an italian, most american acronyms mean literally nothing to me, and as you can imagine, searching HBC online does not help at all.

Thank you again,
Lorenzo V

By the way, I forgot to add that the CD liner notes do not contain the lyrics. They are just a reprint of the old ones that Harry OSter prepared for the LP, which contained only the first 7 songs. This was the first one of those added for the CD reprint.
Just a heads up so you don't waste time trying to look for the liner notes to check that.

Let me correct myself already. Line 34, it's simply "Oh, oh, well, the boat left Memphis etc.". Not Boe. Angola Penitentiary is close to the Mississippi river, so it makes sense that they would send people over from Memphis on a boat.

Can't help you with the lyrics, but just to comment that it's possible to visit Angola Farm (Louisiana State Penitentiary), and a fascinating place it is too. Much more than just the 'human zoo' I was afraid it might be.

Looks like it has some variants.

"Angola Bound" Aaron Neville

Too many mornin' gotta wake up soon
Oh Lord, and eat my breakfast by the light of 'de moon
Oh Lord, by the light of 'de moon

If you see my momma, tell her this for me
Oh I've got a mighty long time, Lord knows I'll never go free
Oh Lord, I'll never be free

Angola bound, now, Angola bound
Angola bound, now, Angola bound

I got lucky last summer when I got my time, Angola bound
Well my partner got a hundred, I got ninety-nine, Angola bound
You been a long time coming but you're welcome home, Angola bound
And go to Louisiana get your burdens on, Angola bound
Oh captain, oh captain don't you be so cruel, Angola bound
Oh you work me harder than you work that mule, Angola bound

If it wasn't for the captain, oh Lord, I'm shaggin' house
I'd be with my woman, yeah, before the sun goes down
You come up here skippin' and a' jumpin', oh Lord, it won't last long
Gonna wish you was a baby boy, in your mother's arms

Angola bound, now, Angola bound
Angola bound, now, Angola bound

Don't want no gal-boy lovin' cause I got my load, Angola bound
Don't want no trouble out 'de boys I know, Angola bound

Oh they always talkin' 'bout dangerous blue, Angola bound
If I had my shank I'd be dangerous too, Angola bound
Oh captain say walk and the boss say run, Angola bound
If I had my pistol I would do 'nere one, Angola bound

If it wasn't for the captain, oh Lord, I'm shaggin' house
I'd be with my woman, yeah, before the sun goes down
You come up here skippin' and 'a jumpin', oh Lord it won't last long
Gonna wish you was a baby boy, in your mother's arms

Angola bound, now, Angola bound
Angola bound, now, Angola bound

If it wasn't for the captain, oh Lord, I'm shaggin' house
I'd be with my woman, yeah, before the sun goes down
You come up here skippin' and 'a jumpin', oh Lord it won't last long
Gonna wish you was a baby boy, in your mother's arms

Angola bound, now, Angola bound
Angola bound, now, Angola bound

If I'd always listened to what my momma said, Angola bound
I wouldn't be deep down in the trouble this way, Angola bound
Oh my momma, she told me, leave that junk alone, Angola bound
Got hooked to the habit, had to carry on, Angola bound
The jury found me guilty cause they wrote it down, Angola bound
Judge said, junkie boy you're penitentiary bound, Angola bound
Angola bound, now, Angola bound
Angola bound, now, Angola bound
Angola bound, now, Angola bound

I had no knowledge of this song until I received an email request to transcribe it,

The person who asked about that song quoted the first lyrics that Guest,Lorenzo shared from https://youtu.be/yxDQcK2OVO8 .

I responded to that request and thought that I would share my attempt at that transcription here. Additions and corrections are very welcome.

ANGOLA BOUND

Mmmm
Oh he denied one of the good lil’ kid

I agree with Lorenzo that "ABC" in this song probably means "Angola Bound Convict".

The LFS albums had booklets of notes and texts, perhaps this
has been transcrived in the original LP release ?????

I added YouTube links and recording descriptions from the three transcriptions above:

The song transcribed by Iains is a Neville Brothers transcription, based on the song recorded by the prison. The song Azizi transcribed is a recording of an Aaron Neville performance of a song that is very close to the song recorded at the prison. It's a pleasure to be able to compare these three transcriptions.

Luigi, here's my transcription from the recording on Spotify from the 1973 album "The Sonet Blues Story"

ANGOLA PENITENTIARY BLUES

Lord, I had a fall
I had a fall in 1955
Lord, I had a fall, bad
In 1955
The police picked me up
Handcuffed me
Carried me to jail
Locked me down
They tried me for my life
April the 6th, 1956
They sent me to Angola
Not to lie, not to lie
They tried me for my life
Tried to electrocute the poor boy
You know, I told 'em
You can't electrocute me, no, no
I said, "I got a man in here in this courthouse
Holds all power in his hand"
They asked me "What man that you'se talking about?"
I was looking dead down at the Bible, you know
I said "God above
Got all the power over me and you"
Yeah, you gonna send me to your pen
I ain't think about your electric chair at all
Oh, you gonna send me to your pen
And I ain't gonna be there long
Oh, yeah, you gonna send me to your pen
Lord, I ain't gonna be there long
Mhmmm, Lord
Didn't know you got the poor boy your way
But that's all right, that's all right
One of these old days, one of these old days
Lord, I'm gonna walk out this old lonesome pen
You can treat me dirty here
But God got His eyes on you
Yeah, you can treat me dirty here
But God got His eyes on you
They gave me my sentence
Not to lie
I said "That's alright, that's alright
I'll take that as His call" *
But I won't be here long
They sent me April the 6th
1956
Fifty nine, fifty nine **
I was at home with my kin
(quietly) Yeah, Lord, buddy
Well, that's when
I met poor Hattie Mae ***
In the east country that Spring
Mhmmm

* Less sure about this line. Maybe "I'll take death as it comes" or something else entirely
** As in 1959, the year he was released to "servitude parole"
*** Robert's wife

Hey Luigi, always glad to help. Obviously I have a day job and other hobbies, so the requests can't be innumerable, but if I can I'm always happy to help :)

In the future, it does help to share any starting point you have, depending on your grasp of English. From my own experience in Spanish, I know it can be quite daunting to tackle, but it helps get a starting point. Not a hard and fast requirement, but it's nice to see.
