I had an idea that might help your friends.

Yesterday I went to rehearsal for our Engiish Country Dance group, and during our rehearsal, several sessions that I had never heard of were mentioned. Your friends could do the same - go to country dances and start talking to the musicians and others about sessions around town.

People who host sessions are doing in their own home or in some other small space. They can't put it on the Internet and invite the whole world. And by socializing first, your friends will establish that they will be pleasant to have around.

Here's a site that might help them get started;

Yes, I know. I used to know a woman who grew up there.

The information isn't for me -- it's for friends who live in the Las Vegas area.

Their interests run towards folk music, rather than the glitter and glitz of the hotels and casinos.

Real people DO live in Las Vegas...

Hi, Bat Goddess. I can't help with music, but the last time I was forced to go to Vegas, we rented a car and visited Floyd Lamb State Park. The park has pools of water which emerge at the base of the mountains, and wild birds are attracted to the water in the desert.

I even think that a ranger told me to come back in August, when there would be lots of hummingbirds. You can check that with the staff, I'm sure.

Glitzy Las Vegas, Nevada isn't the first place to come to mind when thinking of traditional folk music, either vocal or instrumental, but real people also live there...away from the bright lights of the hotels and casinos.

I have some older (gee, "mature" sounds better, doesn't it?) friends who live in Las Vegas most of the year. They're very interested in traditional folk music and the songs of the American Folk Revival and closely follow the music and musicians while they are here in Seacoast New Hampshire. They especially enjoy maritime folk music, especially the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival, but there may not be much of that available in the desert.

I just did a bit of poking about at TheSession.org and found a lead to McMullan's Irish Pub which even seems to have a session every Sunday.

Also mentioned was The Backyard, but at their website I can't find and reference to music, just sports viewing.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Linn
