Hi all,

There's a new folk radio show 'New Traditions' just started this week on BBC Radio Sheffield. Presented by Greg Russell. It's available online here...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06g6yzb

And it's three hours long! Three of them! I'm not going to complain at that.

Enjoy!

I just listened to this instead of the BBC Folk Prom.

Really enjoyed it.

Did Greg Russell really say the second show wouldn't be on for 2-3 weeks because of the football? There's commitment from BBC Sheffield for you.

Yes - I think he said it'll be back in 4 weeks, but weekly more often after that. Check on this page.

Some interesting tracks. Hopefully Greg Russell will settle in.

Greg Russell mentioned that there were other new programmes at the same time on other weekdays. I've googled and can't find an announcement from the BBC about these new programmes. What are Radio Sheffield saying about it?

Five or so years ago the BBC was cutting programmes on local radio and combining evening programming across stations. Specialist music programmes were not a priority under the BBC's 'Putting Quality First' initiative. What's changed?

Could it be that the main reason for these new evening programmes is to broadcast local football? It is not so much football taking the folk music slot as folk music filling in when there's no football?

Was there any live music, or was it just playing records?

Just records - and a very long interview with David Eagle of the Young'uns.
