Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Aug 18 - 08:59 AM Annie Laurie? While her surname isn't Laurie, the lyrics are good! Also thought of Tom Paxton's "Annie's Going to Sing her Song" but not sure that the lyrics fit the occasion. And how about someone writing you a nice wee tune? I found a "Ruby Anniversary waltz" on a sheet of manuscript, tucked inside pne of my mother's song books, written by a friend of my parents for their 40th. It then got played at ours! (Just coming up to our 45th soon!) And sorry for your loss, Ake. |

Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: leeneia Date: 07 Aug 18 - 09:57 PM Don't forget the power of love songs that you listened to and liked when you first met. |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 06 Aug 18 - 09:02 AM "I went to your wedding" Spike Jones ! RtS (47 years and ducking and diving|) |

Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: DMcG Date: 06 Aug 18 - 06:15 AM Good question. I would expect to sing them. Part of the reason I am asking so early is to give me a chance to learn them if need be. "Annie's Song" occurred to me last night and since she liked it back in the mid 70s I feel a shade stupid in not thinking of it earlier. But never mind, we will keep the ideas flowing. |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: GUEST,Observer Date: 06 Aug 18 - 05:58 AM Considering the site, are these suggestions of songs that you will sing, or suggestions for recordings of songs you would like played? Either way my candidate as a suggestion is - The Fureys & Davey Arthur - I Will Love You. |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: Stewart Date: 05 Aug 18 - 07:29 PM Old Love by Neil and Leandra We had this played for us on our 50th eight years ago. Beautiful song! Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: JennieG Date: 05 Aug 18 - 04:51 PM Congratulations in advance! I'm surprised that no one has mentioned "Annie's song" by John Denver......"You fill up my senses like a night in the forest......" |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: Nigel Parsons Date: 05 Aug 18 - 02:22 PM "Ruby" by the Kaiser Chiefs? But not "Ruby" by Kenny Rogers. Of course, it's 'Ruby anniversary'. But any 'port' in a storm. I've got just under two years before I reach that |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Aug 18 - 01:17 PM I'm sorry to read about that, Ake. For all that we argue a lot, we talked about her health a while back and I've wondered. I wish you well. Maggie |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: DMcG Date: 05 Aug 18 - 01:13 PM Sorry to hear that, Ake. I hope you are coping with the changes: I am not at all sure how well I would manage. Some, good suggestions, all. Keep them coming. |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: GUEST,akenaton Date: 05 Aug 18 - 12:21 PM Well "D" I lost my wife of 47 years on Jan 2nd and my advice to you is sing your Annie a real love song.....and keep singing it for as long as you have together. After the kids make their own lives its really just the two of you and it's important to make your feelings for one another clear. When Gina was nearing the end, I told her she could have done better for a husband....she replied "I could never have got better!" I can hardly write that without welling up. I wish you many more years of happiness.....Ake |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: punkfolkrocker Date: 05 Aug 18 - 11:41 AM Here's a jaunty song from 1971 - with a touch of updating and creative 'folk processing' this early 70s 'kitchen sink' comedy drama song could be modified and improved to suit your requirements... "Matrimony Gilbert O'Sullivan Album Himself I've no wish to hurry you luv But have you seen the time It's quarter to ten and we're supposed to be there At nine I don't think the registrar Will be very pleased When we show up an hour late Like two frozen peas Both now facing for the first time Presently and past Something that begins with M And ends in alas More than not complete disaster Even form the start What could it be... It's Matrimony I know how you've dreamt about Being walked down the aisle But think of the money we'll save And you'll see it's worthwhile It won't please our mums and dads But they don't even know Besides if they did what's the betting They wouldn't even go You and me are all that matters Disregard the rest Trust your soon to be old man He knows what is best Very shortly now there's going to be An answer from you Then one from me That's matrimony I'm truly grateful for the little things in life That have made me so glad Every other hour that I spend with you Is not in the least bit sad Quite the opposite in fact And if you don't believe me Here's the proof Ask me if I and I'll say "Aye, I do" You and me are all that matters Disregard the rest Trust your soon to be old man He knows what is best Very shortly now there's going to be An answer from you Then one from me That's matrimony Marriage-the joining together of the two people For better or for worse Till death them do part Ole!" Me and the mrs have been married for about 14 or 15 years [neither of us can remember the date, and the marriage licence went missing years ago] but we've been together more or less since 1982... Now that I read these lyrics for the first time in more than 40 years, it's odd how it nearly reflects the circumstances of our own quick cheap wedding... |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: Nick Date: 05 Aug 18 - 11:02 AM I have a soft spot for Let's Stay Together - by Al Green Bit shmaltzy but Still The One - Shania Twain We've only just begun - Carpenters If it happened to fall on a certain day of the week would Ruby Tuesday work (probably not). And definitely Ruby (don't take your love to town...) could go badly wrong Happy anniversary. I realise that in 2020 I have been living together with my wife for 40 years (we married in 1985 having done that 'living in sin' thing). Ludicrous thought to be this young and have known someone that long |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: GUEST Date: 05 Aug 18 - 08:28 AM I'd go for Myself and Herself (on the CD of the same name by Thomas McCarthy). A lovely song about growing old discracefully together |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: banjoman Date: 05 Aug 18 - 08:27 AM Another song has come to mind which you may consider. "Roseville Fair" "We danced all night to a fiddle and a banjo, their drifting tunes just filled the air etc." |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: Will Fly Date: 05 Aug 18 - 08:25 AM "Oh how we danced on the night we were wed. We danced and we danced, 'cos the room had no bed." Our 52nd is on 29th September. We're celebrating with a week in Glasgow, where I spent my earliest days. Congrats on 40 years! |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: DMcG Date: 05 Aug 18 - 08:23 AM Ann, but I reckon I can swap an Annie for a Maggie if need be. Not that she has ever been called Annie either, but artistic licence, you know. |
Subject: RE: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: banjoman Date: 05 Aug 18 - 08:16 AM What is your wife's name as this may be a guide to a relevant song. At our anniversary we sang " When you & I were young Maggie" so you can guess her name. Congrats on reaching such a milestone. |
Subject: Inspiration sought: 40 years married From: DMcG Date: 05 Aug 18 - 08:05 AM So it is my 40th wedding anniversary on 30th September. In some ways "My Old Dutch" (we've been together now for 40 years) would be ideal, but the husband of one woman attending died recently and he had that at his funeral, so it would be tactless. Your ideas, please, for some songs. |
