The reference to Blind Boy Fuller and "Police Dog Blues" is in error. "Police Dog Blues" was recorded by Blind Blake...different song. The lyrics for Richmond Blues remain representative of a performance by Cephas and Wiggins.

The Cephas and Wiggins lyrics varied a bit and borrowed from different sources (i.e. "Police Dog Blues" by Blind Boy Fuller). I learned the song directly from John Cephas. I think the following is representative.

RICHMOND BLUES (as performed by Cephas & Wiggins)

I'm gonna buy me a bulldog
I'm gonna shuffle two greyhounds
I'm gonna use those dogs
To run my good girl down.

I'm gonna use those dogs
To watch me while I sleep
Gonna keep those men
From making their midnight creep.

I was standing down in Richmond
On. the corner of Broad and Main
When up stepped two police
Said son what is your right name?

I said my name is sewn into my shirt
I'm a woman folk lover'
I sure don't have to work.

My gal she left
She didn't even write to me
She's got my mind all worried
Like water in the deep blue sea.

I'm goin' downtown
Gonna talk to the Chief of Police
That little gal's in trouble
And I can't find me no peace.

I wrote one line
And I laid my pencil down
You know my heart struck sorrow
And tears come rollin' down.

Just as the sure as the birds
Flock in the sky above
Life ain't worth livin'
If you ain't with the one you love.

Unh huh, Un huh
You know doggin' just ain't right
If you gonna dog me
I'll run both day and night.

Unh huh, un huh
Unh huh, oh shucks
You know two men lovin' you
One of us has got to go.

I feel like snappin'
My pistol in your face.
Let some lonesome graveyard
Be your resting place.

Graveyard, graveyard
It's a low down dirty place
You lay flat on your back
They throw mud all in your face.

You know I'd drink muddy water
I'd sleep in a hollow log
Ain't gonna stay here woman
And be treated like your dog.

That's why I'm standin'
Down in Richmond
On the corner of Broad & Main
When up steps two police
Say "son what's your right name."

This is representative of how John would perform the song. Several donor verses. I wouldn't get super hung up on the order of the verses; but once again this is typical of how John would sing the sing.

All [[]] below from before Jimmie Rodgers born 1897 began recording in 1927

My little gal, she went away
Didn't even write me
Got my mind all worried
Like water in a deep blue sea.

Well, I'm goin' up town
I'm gonna talk with that chief police
Lord, my little gal in trouble
And I sure can't find no peace.

I'm gonna buy me a bulldog [["buy me a bulldog" "Jealous Hearted Blues" copyright 1924 by Lovie Austin born about 1887 Tennessee, this is the one that was stolen by A.P. as "Jealous Hearted Me"]]

Jimmie Rodgers used some similar lyrics:

"Standin' on the corner, I didn't mean no harm;
along come a po-leece (sic; for pronunciation) and took me by the arm.

Was down in Memphis, corner of 12th Street and Main;
he said, 'hey, big boy, you got to tell me your name'.

I said, 'You'll find my name in the tail of my shirt;
I'm a Tennessee hustler - I don't have to work.'"

The Cephas and Wiggins version of the Fuller song is awesome.

By the way, it's

"sure ain't got to work"
"bulldog... German Shepherds and two greyhounds"

"Bowling Green" John Cephas was known to change, drop or mumble certain words when performing, especially as he got older, choosing, or perhaps needing, to concentrate more on the steady rhythm of his guitar parts, the fundamental steadiness of which is a hallmark of the Piedmont style, over against the more loose improvisational Delta style.

Another version, which you can hear at YouTube:

RICHMOND BLUES
As recorded by Julius Daniels, 1927.

I was down in Richmond, leanin' on my walkin' cane. (2x)
Policeman come by, asked me what's my name.

My name is written in the bosom of my shirt. (2x)
I'm a solid lover, never had to work.

White folks, white folks, don't work my brown so hard. (2x)
Solid lover but she did not have a job.

When you see me comin', honey, pull down your inside blind. (2x)
So your next-door neighbor sure can't hear you whine.

I made an attempt to transcribe this song without even reading what guest MVS posted, and I am pleased to see we agree pretty closely. But MVS must have been listening to a different recording than I did, because the verses are in a different order, and some inconsequential words are different.

RICHMOND BLUES
As recorded by Cephas & Wiggins on "Richmond Blues" (2008)

I'm gonna find a bulldog; I'm gonna shuffle(?) the greyhound.
Gonna use these dogs to run my good gal down.

I'm gon' use these dogs just to watch me while I sleep,
Just to keep them men from making that early creep.

I was standing down in Richmond on a corner near Broad and Main.
Up walked two police, said: "Son, what is your right name?"

And I told him that my name is stamped on my shirt.
I'm a one-pole(?) lover, sure ain't got to work.

My little gal went away; didn't even write me.
Got my mind all worried like water in the deep blue sea.

Then I'm going, going uptown; I'm gon' talk with that chief of police.
That little gal in trouble, sure can't find no peace.

Just as true as birds, you know, flock in skies above,
You know life ain't livin' if you ain't with the one that you love.

Then I wrote one line and I laid that pencil down.
My heart struck silent; tears come rollin' down.

Now, uh-huh, uh-huh, you know dogging ain't right.
Now if you gonna dog me, I'll run both day and night.

Now, uh-huh, uh-huh, I'll ... [unintelligible].
You know, two men lovin' you; one of us has got to go.

And I feel like snappin' my pistol in your face.
Now, in some graveyard be your restin' place.

Now, a graveyard, graveyard, it's a lowdown dirty place.
Lie flat on your back, throw mud all in your face.

Now, I'm gon' drink muddy water; I'll sleep in a hollow log.
Ain't gonna stay here, woman, and be treated like a dog.

That's why I was standing down in Richmond on that corner near Broad and Main.
Up walked two police: "Son, what is your right name?"

I can't immediately place this in the Fuller discography (he used that song structure numerous times, in E and G, and maybe in A as well -- the old "Crow Jane" tune), There's a verse from "Pistol Slapper Blues," and the first two verses were, I think, originally recorded by Jimmie Rodgers. Great performance, but Cephas and Wiggins always bring their own originality, and I would consider this a salute to Fuller rather than a cover.

This is what I make of the lyrics.

I was standin', standin' in Richmond
On the corner of Broad and Main
Up walked two police,
Said, "Son what is your right name?"

Then I told him my name
Was stamped on my shirt
I'm a woman fool lover
I sure can't got no work [that's what it sounds like]

My little gal, she went away
Didn't even write me
Got my mind all worried
Like water in a deep blue sea.

Well, I'm goin' up town
I'm gonna talk with that chief police
Lord, my little gal in trouble
And I sure can't find no peace.

I'm gonna buy me a bulldog
I'm gonna shepherd two greyhounds [that's what it sounds like]
I'm gonna use these dogs
Just to run my good gal down.

I'm gonna use these dogs
Just to watch me while I sleep
Just to keep them men
From making their early creep.

Lord, I wrote one line
And I laid my pencil down
My heart struck sorrow
And the tears come rollin' down.

Uh huh, uh huh,
Uh huh, aw shucks [Fuller usually says "Oh, pshaw"]
You know two men lovin' you
But one of 'em's got to go.

Then I feel, feel like slappin'
My little pistol in your face
Lord, now, In some graveyard
'll be your restin' place.

Graveyard, graveyard,
It's a lowdown dirty place
Lie flat on your back
Throw mud all in your face.

I'll drink muddy water
I'll sleep in a hollow log
Ain't gonna stay here, woman,
Be treated like no dog.

That's why I was standin', standin' in Richmond
On the corner of Broad and Main
Up walked two police
Said, "Son, what is your right name?"

Thans guys.
No, it's definitely not the song by Blind Boy Fuller (or by Cephas and Wiggins).
I've found a song with those lyrics and title on youtube (Clarence Howard & Fred Price - Richmond Blues), which is a totally different song.
This is the song (3rd track of side 2):

Here's another version:

All Night Long-Burnett & Rutherford
Dick Burnett, vocal and guitar in G position, standard tuning, Leonard Rutherford, fiddle

All night long, all night long
All night long, all night long

I'm going to the depot, look 'pon the board
If the train ain't here, somewhere on the road

Somewhere on the road, somewhere on the road
If the train ain't here, somewhere on the road

All night long, all night long
All night long, well, all night long

I'm going to the depot (fiddle finishes verse)

If I'd a-minded, what mama said
I could-a been a-sleeping in mama's bed

Me being young, and foolish, too
I left my home on the 'count of you

On the 'count of you, on the 'count of you
I left my home on the 'count of you

I'd druther be dead and in my grave
Than be in this town, treated this-a-way

All night long, all night long
All night long, all night long

H'ain't got no woman, h'ain't got no kin
H'ain't got nobody to be bothered with

All night long, all night long
All night long, all night long

So if I live and don't get killed
Gonna make my home in Louisville

All night long, all night long
All night long, from midnight on

All night long, all night long
All night long, all night long

There's a set of lyrics at http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/old-time-music/old-time-songs/richmond_blues.html though I don't know whether those are the Cephas-Wiggins lyrics.

Hi all,
I'm looking for the lyrics of Richmond Blues (by Blind Boy Fuller?)
John Cephas and Phil Wiggins recorded it in records like Living Country Blues vol. 1, From Richmond to Atlanta and Richmond Blues.
I tried to catch the lyrics from their recordings but I did not succeed very much.
Thanks in advance.
Carlo
