Subject: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 Aug 18 - 03:23 PM Fu Manchu, or Gyles Brandreth...? |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Senoufou Date: 05 Aug 18 - 03:29 PM Heh heh Big Al, I take it you're not terribly keen on poor old Giles? I find him irritating and smuttily smug. But Fu Manchu used spiders among other creatures (snakes etc) to do his evil work for him. If the choice is only between these two, I'd have to go for Giles Brandreth. Couldn't I have Sir David Attenborough or Prof Brian Cox though? I'd love to be chained to either of them! |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Senoufou Date: 05 Aug 18 - 03:30 PM Ooops, just realised he spells his name with a 'y', pretentious knob! |

Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Aug 18 - 12:16 PM Well, hmmm.... I guess being chained to Joan Jett might be interesting, just for a change of pace. But for how long? |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Steve Shaw Date: 07 Aug 18 - 12:39 PM In the old politically-incorrect days the answer would have been a dumb nymphomaniac with a pub. I'll get me coat. |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Joe_F Date: 07 Aug 18 - 10:10 PM I have never even heard of any of the maniacs mentioned so far. |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Aug 18 - 11:51 PM HA! HA! HA! Excellent, Steve. Joe - I have no idea who Gyles Brandreth is...nor Bryan Cox either. I have heard of Sir David Attenborough. The Insidious Doctor Fu Manchu is a character in some old adventure stories which pit courageous British heroes Nayland Smith and Doctor Petrie (think of Holmes and Watson) against a Chinese mastermind and evil genius from those glorious days of "The Yellow Peril", when Chinese villains were all the rage in British literature. Here is a brief summary: "London, 1913—the era of Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, and the Invisible Man. A time of shadows, secret societies, and dens filled with opium addicts. Into this world comes the most fantastic emissary of evil society has ever known… Dr. Fu-Manchu. Denis Nayland Smith pursues his quarry across continents and through the back alleys of London. As victim after victim disappears at the hands of the Devil Doctor, Smith must unravel his murderous plot before it is too late." And as for the inestimable Joan Jett, she is an American hard rock and heavy metal singer...the veritable queen of her trade, with a long and remarkable musical career, and not a small amount of genuine talent....as well as a very good instinct for how promote herself in a world that is almost entirely dominated by male performers, managers, etc. Good for her, I say! Not my usual kind of music at all, but I have to say she does it with great panache. |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Aug 18 - 12:04 AM Here is a classic example of Joan Jett and her young punk bandmates, the Blackhearts in action. Good clean fun! Bad Reputation! I figure it would make for an interesting change of pace from my usually sedate existence. :) |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Rusty Dobro Date: 08 Aug 18 - 03:11 AM Putin or Trump or Boris Johnson or Kim Jong Un ...... Dammit, we're all chained to all of them! |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Steve Shaw Date: 08 Aug 18 - 03:45 AM Shouldn't that be: "Joe - I have no idea who Gyles Brandreth is...nor Bryan Cox either. I have heard of Sir Davyd Attenborough." ?? |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Aug 18 - 04:35 AM I have always wanted to be chained to Rita Hayworth. I suppose that since she's dead and all, I would soon tire of this arrangement. But hey, I can dream, can't I? |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Senoufou Date: 08 Aug 18 - 05:57 AM (still obsessed with these ideas) Can I please be stuck in a lift with BOTH Sir David Attenborough AND Prof Brian Cox? (Merely to spend the time discussing Ecology, Zoology, Astrophysics and Astronomy of course. Nothing else, no no.) |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Thompson Date: 08 Aug 18 - 08:02 AM What about William Blake? Certainly crazy but maybe entertaining (though distressing). The same with Christopher Smart. And James Clarence Mangan, with his green glasses and the four umbrellas he always carried. What can he have done with them all when it rained? |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Senoufou Date: 08 Aug 18 - 08:06 AM Oh, and I forgot Usher. Is there room for him too in this lift? |

Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Aug 18 - 10:21 AM Well, at least we have found a new subject of conversation here. |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Aug 18 - 03:44 PM And it got me to watch some Joan Jett videos on Youtube, which was quite enjoyable. |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 08 Aug 18 - 04:08 PM Dr Emmett Brown from Back to the Future or Tom Bombadil from Lord of the Rings. Did anyone say they had to be real? |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Aug 18 - 05:57 AM Have we decided on the precise manner of the preferred chaining process here? Will bedposts and handcuffs be involved? |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Senoufou Date: 09 Aug 18 - 06:12 AM Whips? Tickling sticks? Black plastic attire? Ooer...I'm getting a bit carried away here :) Could one be released from the chain while the chosen person goes to the loo? Even Sir David Attenborough/Brian Cox would lose their appeal in that situation. If we're allowed fictional characters,as Dave suggests, then I'd like Fitzwilliam Darcy please. |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Aug 18 - 10:42 AM Apart from jumping into ponds and getting his shirt wet can Mr Darcy be classed as a maniac though? :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Senoufou Date: 09 Aug 18 - 12:15 PM Ah, but in the original novel, Darcy never did emerge dripping wet from the lake. He wasn't exactly a maniac, you're quite right, but he was a snobby and pompous twat. However, he did warm to Elizabeth eventually (same name as me!), and did everything possible to remedy the consequences of Lydia's foolish elopement. and (whispers)... He was very very rich....! :) |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: keberoxu Date: 09 Aug 18 - 06:22 PM Poor Colin Firth will never live that down, will he. |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Little Hawk Date: 09 Aug 18 - 07:16 PM I love that movie. (If it's the one I think it is.) "Whips? Tickling sticks? Black plastic attire?" Well, the reason I selected Joan Jett is partly that I think she knows everything there is to know about all that kind of stuff, so she makes the perfect candidate. And at the same time, her music is very good of its type...even though it's anything but folk music! :) |
Subject: RE: BS: which maniac would you be chained to? From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Aug 18 - 08:29 PM Music? Sod that. Bring on the chains... |
