Subject: Lyr Add: Two Ronnies G&S Parody
From: Senoufou
Date: 07 Aug 18 - 06:17 PM

Someone recently was still trying to obtain the lyrics of a verse which included the words 'far canal' in a Gilbert & Sullivan parody sung by the two Ronnies with little success.

The Youtube videos miss out the crucial verse.
But I've just watched a repeat this evening on TV and managed to scribble down the lost lyrics, and here they are:-

Oh I lost my little sweetie pie in Venice (pie in Venice)
Let me warn you never go there with a gal (with a gal)
For those gondoliers they really are a menace (are a menace)
As they ply their trade along that far canal (fancy that)

Obviously it should be the words 'far canal' that are repeated, which is the point of the joke.

Should have added that it's a parody of 'A policeman's lot is not a happy one'.

Hahaha Nigel! I bet they are!

Hook Eagle Morris are on Youtube dancing Far Canal to the tune of Kingston Black in 2004. I've watched it many times and the significance of the dance's name never struck me until now. I must be rather dim!

(By the way, Kingston Black is merely the name of a type of eating apple.)

My sister-in-law in Hove used to live next door to a house called Far Corfe.

There is a hamburger restaurant in Hove called Burger Off.

And there is a shop that sells brass door hardware called Knobs and Knockers.

I think that one has been copied a few times.

You can hear the Two Ronnies' performance of GILBERT AND SULLIVAN at YouTube. It's from the album "The Best of the Two Ronnies" (1976). Lyrics have been posted in a thread called Lyr Req: Bold Sir John (Two Ronnies sketch)

Yes Jim, but in the Youtube album, the 'far canal' verse isn't there. Also, in the lyrics posted on the 'Lyr Req: Bold Sir John' it's missing as well.
The only two verses are the drunken sailor lying in the gutter and Nelson's deathbed. No mention of the gondoliers in Venice.
I just thought I'd fill in the gap.
