Subject: Lyr Add: OLD CABIN HOME (T. Paine)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 13 Aug 18 - 02:01 PM

From the sheet music found at Baylor University:

THE OLD CABIN HOME
by T. Paine, ©1857.

1. I am going far away, far away to leave you now;
To the Mississippi river I am going.
I will take my old banjo, and I'll sing this little song
Away down in my Old Cabin Home:

CHORUS: Here is my Old Cabin Home.
Here is my sister and my brother.
Here lies my wife, the joy of my life,
And my child in the grave with its mother.

2. I am going to leave this land, with this our darkey band,
To travel all the wide world over,
And when I get tired I will settle down to rest,
Away down in my Old Cabin Home.

3. When old age comes on us, and my hair is turning gray,
I will hang up the banjo all alone.
I'll set down by the fire, and I'll pass the time away,
Away down in my Old Cabin Home.

4. 'Tis there where I roam, away down on the old farm,
Where all the darkeys am free;
O merrily sound the banjo for de white folks round de room,
Away down in my Old Cabin Home.

"The Child in the Grave With Its Mother" gets a mention in a short story THE KING OF
BOYVILLE by William Allen White.
(The Real Issue - White, William Allen(1896))
... he tried to sing, and wailed dismal ballads about the 'Gypsy's Warning,' and "The Child in the Grave With Its Mother, and "She's a Daisy, She's a Darling, She's a Dumpling, She's a Lamb,' whenever he was in hearing distance of his Heart's Desire, in the hope of conveying to her some hint of the state of his affections; but it was useless.

I'm reading Mark Twain's ROUGHING IT, and at one point he mentions a Swede who sings the same song repeatedly. The lyrics he cites mention “sister and his brother” and “the child in the grave with its mother,” but that's the extent of it. Anyone know the song?
