Subject: Lyr Req: Film song w 'Ten little jitterbug boys'? From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Aug 18 - 08:40 AM In the 1938 movie "Going Places", a song and dance number featuring Louis Armstrong goes thru nursery rhyme verses where each mostly-traditional verse ends with one jazz-oriented parody line. I missed the opening of this number to record it to DVD. Another line ended the Itsy Bitsy Spider with the spider joining in to jam. It's a fairly long chunk of film-- I got 4 minutes' worth as I woke up. My puder isn't nice to me today. Can anybuddy find this? Btw I noticed an interesting thing with the Black singers, dancers, and musicians who carry almost all of the freight for this number-- bracketing Dick Powell and Anita Louise's little bits, as they sing and dance the occasional verse (and "earn" those white headliners' paychecks). And that thing I noticed is that the minstrel-mugging-- for the opportunity to make a very few bucks-- is dropped each time the Black artist does their solo bars. I noticed it first with Armstrong himself-- the exaggerated eye rolling and lip smacking that perpetuates stereotypes to this day completely disappears the moment he picks up the horn for a solo. As the numbrr proceeds, you see this exact phenomenon with the dancers, band members, and singers. As if to say, "If you want that bit only I can do, I can only do it THIS way." I can imagine many veiled or open standoffs with directors over this during that era of the studio system. ~Susan |
