Careless language. Depression is a mental illness, a condition of the brain which can lead to suicide, unemployment, homelessness. A victim needs professional help. Depression is not a subject for amateurs.

The article is talking about normal emotional responses to the drought - sadness, worry, fear, horror. Medicine won't help. Maybe music can.

It is important not to confuse depression with sadness.

I'd rather have no money than no rain but they can both be 'depressing'

Farmers here are suffering, and there is no end in sight. Mental health is affected, and depression is a very real possibility when someone feels powerless to influence a positive change, and how powerless can you be when you are hoping for rain and there is no end in sight to the drought which has gone on for years.

Don't underrate what has been happening to our farmers, please.

drought farmers mental health

how other people are helping

"And yes, let this be your reminder that Australia is still in a really severe drought, something that can be easy to miss from the cities. Life for farming families is pretty tough at the moment, which is the other reason these lamb jumpers are so welcome: every delivery that shows up is a sign that people care and want to pitch in."

Globalization prevents drought from becoming a deadly famine.
Famine is the evil twin of drought and that is beyond depressing.
Globalization collapsed in the past. It can happen again but takes 4 out of 4 simultaneous disasters.

From what I read in the first week of September 2018 on-line versions of the "Financial Times"....Australia has far exceeded the 20% equity in real-estate investment. Leverage is gone.

The speculation bubble has burst.

Sincerely,

I'll keep this thread from my wife.
She reckons folk music is "Music to slash your wrists to."
I've stopped practising English trad at home now.   ;-)

If you are depressed, then the last thing you want to do is listen to folk music or hang around with folkies.
;-)

However, having some kind of "interest" is always helpful but, as others have said, sometimes professional help is necessary.

Cognitive therapy and medication probably saved my life back when I suffered a severe bout of depression. Since, I've kept it at bay with a number of things including appreciation of and participation in music, lots of physical activity and positive human contact. Music can lighten your mood and provide a distraction from the banalities of life and even inspire and elevate you but if someone is really suffering they should get professional help.

Just discovered the Russian Folk band 'Otava Yo', something about their music just makes it hard to stay down, at least in the short term.

'She reckons folk music is "Music to slash your wrists to."'

You and Johnny J have not been listening to enough kinds of folk music. In my big black of piano music, I have sexy fiddle tunes, beautiful waltzes, jolly polkas, and tender love songs. All are enjoyable.

Get away from the old murder ballads and see what else is out there. And keep in mind that the old murder ballads were the urban tales of their day. Don't take them seriously.

It is important not to confuse depression with sadness.

Umm, Sorry, leeneia, but I think you are talking... Who gave you the magic wand, the one that allows you to draw the line between 'only' feeling sad and 'mental illness'?

Careless language? I've seen enough of your posting to hope that you will read this & think, "Ahhhh, that didn't read quite as I meant it!" As we all do, from time to time. ;-)
