Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy From: leeneia Date: 11 Sep 18 - 01:34 PM That's right about now. Get over there. What's a wurzel? Any relationship to mangelswurzel? |
Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy From: The Sandman Date: 11 Sep 18 - 04:54 PM its Dorset slang, BUT ACCORDING TO WIKI.. A wurzel is a farming bumpkin from the little Hampshire village of Portsmouth.THER WAS A POLUR CROOSOVER FOLK BAND CALLED the wurzels, yes its a corruption of mangel wurzel, meaning country bumpkin, where iu come from they were called swede bashers , cos they ate lots of swedes or turnips |
Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy From: RTim Date: 11 Sep 18 - 08:21 PM A Wurzel is a Turnip...........A Manglewurzel! Tim Radford |
Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy From: leeneia Date: 11 Sep 18 - 09:43 PM Are you sure it's a not a rutabaga? Is it orange in color or purple and white? In one of my favorite passages from P.G. Wodehouse, beautiful but vacant Veronica gazes at Tipton, the young American millionaire, "like a cow staring at a mangelwurzel on the other side of the fence." I paraphrase. |
Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy From: GUEST,paperback Date: 12 Sep 18 - 01:37 AM >A wurzel is a farming bumpkin from the little Hampshire village of Portsmouth The Sandman, thanks for that^. It kind of clears up the meaning behind the expression - I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. I mean after all why not pumpkin truck? In a general sense it would make as much sense as turnip truck, except now with what you said, hmmm, puzzle solved? |
Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy From: leeneia Date: 12 Sep 18 - 09:45 AM No, a pumpkin is not the same. Turnips are stupider than pumpkins. The smell and the taste, for example. I grew turnips one year, then we didn't want to eat them. They taste like dirt. FYI, wurzel is German for root. Mangel means defect. ========== Sandman, how was the gig? |
Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy From: GUEST,paperback Date: 12 Sep 18 - 09:58 AM Well, I didn't just fall off Turnip Truck. |

Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy-11 Sept From: keberoxu Date: 12 Sep 18 - 09:17 PM Wurzels are also called mangolds, yes? |
Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy-11 Sept From: GUEST,John Bowden (not a typo!) Date: 13 Sep 18 - 01:48 AM "FYI, wurzel is German for root. Mangel means defect." True, but "mangelwurzel" is derived from the German Mangoldwurzel - "Mangold" on its own means Swiss chard. Nothing to do with Mangel/defect. |
Subject: RE: wurzel bush folk club martin carthy-11 Sept From: RTim Date: 13 Sep 18 - 11:43 AM Martin Carthy is no Turnip, Swede or whatever Root Vegetable you wish - he is a great performer.... Tim Radford |
