I see on the News that there's a very severe hurricane heading for some of the eastern states of USA (Virginia, Carolina for example), and that some areas are being evacuated.
Just wanted to say I hope all you folks in those parts stay safe and will get through the storm without too much damage.
I hate storms and high winds, so I really feel for you.

Its always the floods that follow that create the most devestation and loss of life.
That area near the coast is often built on pillars to allow for storm surge. Evacuation routes are clearly marked. US Naval vessels are all putting out to sea to avoid the storm. Locals are well practiced to respond to hurricanes.

I hope you're right Donuel. But I have been following an update by a weather centre out there, and it says it's a Category 4 possibly 5, with winds of 130mph gusting to 160mph. It will reach the coast on Thursday/Friday. They did say about a million people face mandatory evacuation.

As usual prez shrimp is making this impending disaster all about himself, last night referring to his disgraceful handling of Maria, in which 3000 people died in Puerto Rico and they're still reeling from it's effects, as an unsung sucess. Sickening. I've been through 3 hurricanes here in Florida and the last thing you want to hear is a boastful jackass falsely furnishing his resume as the storm bears down on you.

"Hurricane Florence could cause an environmental disaster in North Carolina, where waste from hog manure pits, coal ash dumps and other industrial sites could wash into homes and threaten drinking water supplies.

"Preparations are also being made at half a dozen nuclear power plants that stand in the path of the 500-mile-wide hurricane, which is barreling toward the US east coast, expected to make landfall Thursday night. More than 1.4 million residents across North and South Carolina have been ordered to evacuate."

We enjoy (yes, I know......) watching renno porn TV - house hunting/buying, home renovations, etc - some of which are folk searching for a home at the beach. Of course they want to be right on the beach; recently we watched a couple of programs filmed on Topsail Island, North Carolina, where buyers purchased homes a short walk from the edge of the water. We can't help wondering if those houses will still be standing in a couple of weeks.

Oh dear, this is all very worrying indeed.
However, sometimes these storms veer off over the ocean, or diminish in force unexpectedly.
Let's hope it will pass over without too much damage or danger.

AccuWeather has the most detailed and helpful forecasts I've seen - most of the media are just exploiting this to sell adspace.

The nuclear angle is scary - the endangered plant is on a river that could flood badly.

Not wishing to belittle the enormity of what may be facing America's East coast, but my 4-year-old grand-daughter is called Florence and is slightly mystified by all this: we know she is like a whirlwind at times and definitely prone to melt-downs.

I see that Florence (apologies to Tattie!) has been somewhat downgraded to a 'storm' category one. I do hope this is true, and while strong winds are horrible, perhaps the threat to life and property is now diminished. Flooding will still be a problem though, according to News sources I looked at.

I watched some shots of the poor inhabitants over there boarding up their windows and removing anything not secured from their gardens and frontage. The wind already appeared to be very strong.

We're due the tail end of Hurricane Helene in the next few days. I think the North and West of UK will get the brunt of it.
Gawd, I really hate high winds and storms.

I was thinking of you Steve. Are you expecting high winds there from Helene? We seem to have a constant chilly breeze here in the East from the North Sea, but normally we escape the worst of the weather which affects the West and Scotland.

I'm puzzled - I thought hurricanes were named in alphabetical order, so if Helene is the tail end of a hurricane it should have a name earlier than F. Or is it 'storm Helene', not from across the Atlantic, but the next to be named by UK/Irish/European meteorologists? (I can't remember what the previous one was.)

The windspeed is all that gets downgraded when a hurricane gets rated with a smaller number or classed as a "storm".   Florence is becoming more dangerous as its windspeed drops - it's carrying far more water than originally predicted, maybe beating Hurricane Harvey for the US's all-time rainfall records.

On average we get a good battering two or three times every winter. In 2014 we got storm after storm and they did a lot of damage. We live about half a mile inland, very exposed, but we have a good roof, so the worst we get is salt over all our windows. We've lived here for 32 years now and I've cultivated lots of shrubs and trees to shelter our patch. When we first moved here we were very open and we got two lots of serious roof damage (new roof since then, with stainless steel clips holding each slate) and two greenhouses demolished. The shelter from the trees and shrubs now takes care of that. You live and learn and roll with Mother Nature! But most of the time it's a lovely place to live. And the sun sets over the sea. We had a belting sunset yesterday. Don't like those easterlies on your side, as I'm both man and beast!

You're right Steve, it is a bit blowy here almost all the time. (Most welcome when we had 34 degrees this summer though)

When we head off occasionally out to Fakenham to visit Morrisons, we notice the bitterly chilly wind while walking from the car to the store.
Nitwit husband shivers in his football top or African costume. (He won't put on a jacket unless there's snow around!)

But the Tesco Extra store out at Sprowston is nearly always windless and much warmer (according to the thermometer in the car) It's nearer to the Broads and more inland I suppose.
Cromer is enough to freeze one's ...er...

I'm intrigued that you're man AND beast though Steve. A bit Jeckyll and Hyde eh?

On the Uk winds drift. The house I lived in in North Wales second time round was the worst I knew for winds. Fantastic views from Snowdonia round to Llandudno (and I believe from the roof, you could get round to Penrhyn Bay) but the trade off was that it was quite exposed. The house itself was very well built but we did lose a wooden/glass sort of out building attached to the house one year. I pretty well had to wrestle Pip out of there that night. The I guess about 15ft frame on one side was collapsing and she seemed to think she could prop it up whereas I only saw any such attempt as resulting in death or serious injury… Upturned shed and hen houses were reasonably common.

It can get windy where I am now – never quite sure but probably less than a mile from maybe Overstrand in a straight line to the north Norfolk coast and things can get tossed about round the back but not as bad as a really strong wind in N Wales.

Sister up in Perthshire seems to get very strong winds that hurtle along the Carse of Gowrie. All the nearly-ripe plums from her trees were blown to the ground last week. She had to make loads of jam and purée so as not to waste them.

And I guess we don't really see that much in the UK, Sen. Some time back, I was talking to brother in Oz about some cyclone (Debbie?) and the possible effects of flooding where he was. I mentioned the Llandudno 1993 flood which gave about 6 inches of water in three hours, completely overwhelming the system. And he says that sort of "cloudburst" is not that uncommon in his part of Queensland. And of course that's not thinking of scale of area...

He was OK with the cyclone btw. I think he was shut in for a few days and his drive joined a creek, forming part of a "raging torrent" but that was about it.

You're right Jon, we're quite fortunate here. My young cousin emigrated with her parents to Ontario many years ago, and said they sometimes got minus 30 degrees Celsius in winter. They had to cover their mouths with a woolly scarf, as if they breathed in, their lungs might freeze!
And our 34 degrees here this summer was as nothing compared to 40 degrees with 90% humidity which my in-laws put up with many times in Ivory Coast.

Futures will be betting on the shortage of ham bacon and pork bellies. Do not forget chicken. The storm has gone out to sea. It has done a tremendous amount of damage because it moved so slowly - 3 mph, as fast as a healthy person can walk. In the aftermath of that, rivers continue to flood, and as of yesterday the governor was urging people not to return home yet.

The danger of being swept away by swift flood waters is still great.

The other handy thing massive disasters do for the power elite is disenfranchising their opponents. Americans often lose voter registration when they move, and the poorer and blacker you are, the more likely you are to become an internal refugee and the less likely you are to retain your civil rights after being forced out. So people who have finally woken up to what the climate change deniers have done to them lose any right to argue back at the ballot box.

Correction: the storm seems to be moving north in the U.S. towards New England. Flash floods are a danger.

So far there are 42 dead, and there have been tornadoes in Virginia, but no deaths.
