Subject: BS: Do I hold the buggered thread record?
From: Dave the Gnome
Date: 12 Sep 18 - 09:15 AM

I recently started a thread that had its first off topic argument on the second post, went severely downhill on the fifth and was totally f****d by the tenth! Is that a record?

What was this thread that caused such controversy? Global warming? World poverty? Trump? No, a quick review of a new album! This place is getting worse. Maybe banning guests above the line as well would help although, in truth, it is most often a member that causes most damage.

Well if posters restricted their abuse to ideas or arguments rather than the poster then I suspect most terminated threads would eventually die of their own volition, and require no last rites from a moderator.

I doubt it, Dave. There are several posters (including one who polluted the thread I think you're referring to) who almost certainly must have beaten "done by the tenth". I'm not going to name any names; you can think of your own, and I'm sure several will feature on both lists! ;-)

Try regaining control of the thread. Start a new post with something "To get back to the topic of the ___________ album." Let the trolls know you are ignoring them.

Dave's "buggered" thread is called Egypt Station in the music section.
Hope that helps.

The linkmaker failed to work on it.
Sorry.

Your nonsense was removed from that thread to try to bring it back on topic. Trolling abatement is part of the mod job.

Congratulations, Keith. You've managed to display your egotism, your narcissism, your presumption, your
technological incompetence, as well your posting incontinence all in one mercifully brief (for a change) piece of rubbish. And that's another thread buggered...

I'm sure all of The Usual Suspects are now having a snigger at your expense. If you don't know what a snigger is, it's the schadenfreude version of a chuckle. You can look up schadenfreude yourself. Have a lousy day! :)

Own goal with the technical bit I'm afraid, Raed :-(

Try this one instead.

For some reason the Mudcat link maker buggers up links to internal threads faster than threads can be buggered :-) If you take out the bits before the word 'thread' it seems to do the trick although I cannot guarantee it.

(I notice that's the *only* part of my post you're disagreeing with... ;-) )

I had to doctor three or four threads this morning. It helps to give a clear title with some sort of tag "review," "info," whatever - it's really important that the title and first message give a clear indication of what we're supposed to be talking about.

And it's important that the title be universally understandable, not just in Sussex. I couldn't figure out to do with "Willy Toledo vs. the Inquisition, 2018," so at least I added the word "Spain" to the title and posted some questions about Spain that I want to know about. I hope my questions are reasonably related. My daily newspaper is half the size it used to be, so I get very little news about Spain.

Here's an idea for an easily understood code for when a thread has been buggered
mostly by one individual...

eg...

This thread has been Keithed...

or less frequently... Jimmed / Steved / punfolkrockred / Gnomed / mudelfed / etc..
fill in any name you want if you reckon it's obvious they were the buggerer of any particularly well bubbered thread......

I wonder if the Mudcat
has got both
buggered threads
and
bubbered threads.

HA! I just caught out the Mudcat spellchecker feature;
it wanted me to submit
"blubbered threads"
which is yet a third distinction.
Have we any blubbered threads?
We might have some blubbered posts ...

Dave I don't specialize in left handed compliments, snubs and vieled threats or insults. Those that do are highly competative people or acting out a fantacisized persona to make up for a feeling of inadequacy. I am not a competative person, I'm already adequate.
In fact I am firmly slightly below average. I'm just courious.

Self depreciating humour goes over the heads of some more combative mudcatters...
They interpret it as weakness to be manipulated and exploited...

They fail to understand that Folks with healthy higher levels of self assurance and self esteem
tend to indulge in that style of humble 'modest' humour...

Funny buggers! This little thread has given me a good laugh, about a lot of things.

I have a copy of TP's Jingo but haven't read it yet. I was a bit TP-ed out after attempting to read all of his books, of which I think we own the whole list. I achieved a fairly good score on that attempt, but after a while I thought I would have a rest and start again later. Maybe now is a good time. (I pride myself on having introduced a LOT of people to TP when I was a librarian. I kept buying every new book of his for the collection and then recommending them to all possible takers.)

I've managed to hold a buggered thread record on starting a thread and then the thread dies of malnourishment due to total lack of interest, or I post a comment which I think is relevant to an ongoing conversation and the conversation "dies in the ar$e", as we say here in Oz. How do I manage to do that? Conversation-killer.

Oh well!
Helen

I recall once deliberately *trying* to come up with a thread that no one else would have enough interest in to bother posting on it. It wasn't easy, but I think I finally managed it with a thread that was about an upcoming karaoke night in Belgium or something along that line.

What can be done about PEST sorry GUEST observer who seems to troll a number of threads, considers himself a world expert on all matters and rapidly p*sses everyone off with his huge cut and paste arguments which actually have little to do with the topic?

The subject we were discussing above the line ended up with those of us who know each other* continuing on other sites and by email, to a satisfactory conclusion.

Sadly other people not in that loop may never know the information.

Which sorta defeats the purpose of asking questions and offering answers when a smart-ar*e (who actually knows considerably less than he thinks) butts in and will not go away or at least hush up!

*some of us use our own names, other use pseudonyms - but certainly in the Scottish folk scene we all know or can work out their identities!

Gallus Moll - Sadly, what you describe, is as much - if not more - responsible
for the decline of mudcat community
than the destructive behaviour of a few persistent 'trolls'..
who got all the blame...

It's when the good people chicken out and bugger off to find sanctuary in secretive places elsewhere,
that sites like this are left as playgrounds for the disruptive arseholes...

Stay here and fight back is my prefered way of resistance..

Dave You are about the same age as Elizabeth Heidi Goebbels whose death was falsely reported in 1945. While all the other children were given a shot of cyanide sulfate she was given anesthesia and spirited away by Eva's secretary and an SS guard. It goes to show being the cutest pays off. Raedwulf - I tend to not care about my public image - there's some here who tolerate me...

But there was a definite organized exodus a few years back..
Disgruntled mudcatters effed off to their own new little holier than thou hidey hole,
forming a breakaway site somewhere else [arsebook...???]..

Blaming others for their departure, rather than staying to help sort things out...

Of course, I can't remember too much about it now..

Sadly some of my favourite mudcatters have passed away - which is a better excuse...

..other's I liked, who also helped make this a more interesting and balanced place, have just drifted away MIA...???

Yes I remember something about the hundreds of suicides resulting from being so sad by not being included in the secret original exclusive 'in the loop smart group'. Its so sad they never knew the glory of gritty exclusivity.

Unfortunately the original exclusives have died out along with the human heroes and never knew how happy they could have been knowing the eternal suffering of the despicables that they hated so much.

sage words pfr - - however after several of us had tried to engage in conversation with said observer (who really did not 'get' what the discussion was about)and some people were becoming more and more frustrated nay enraged (I include myself!) the realisation came that the best way was to completely ignore this person, carry on with discussion as if he (for it is a he) was not there at all!
Which is fine - - 'cept there were particular issues to discuss and some of us felt uncomfortable sharing these with a person whose sole purpose was to disprove and disrupt.
I am certain that this troll would not open his mouth if he was in the same room as us for fear of showing his limitations and ignorance -- he is hiding behind his anonymity.

Helen, you will best appreciate TP's "Jingo"
from having read many of the other TP Discworld books beforehand.

"Jingo" has these central factors, with which it is
best to have some background familiarity and history.

The Patrician ... ah, shoot, what IS his name again?
The Night Watch. All of them out in force.
And, regarding the Night Watch,
Commander Vimes and his "Bingly-Bingly BEEP!"
Leonardo da Quirm plays a starring role, but you have to know who he is (introduced in that book about The Gonne).
Klatsch. Or is it Klatsh? can't remember.
The meddlesome aristocrats of Ankh.

This is one of TP's more involved plots.
But then, I am what Mudcatter Will Fly calls
A Bear of Little Brain,
and sometimes TP's plotting confuses the expletive deleted out of me.
Enjoy.

Observer is an ex-member who has had his membership revoked. He can no longer post below the line so he now uses the same tactics as he used to use, above it. Not that clever really as it gives the game away as to who he is and, yes, the best idea is to just ignore him.

Aaaahh, it's not who I thought it was then, posting as a guest to disguise his identity - he's still posting down here.

I could be wrong BWM. Maybe it was just a terible guess :-)

My thread with no further posts has been added to! It did go 45 hours with no one posting though :-)

Oh, it's him is it? He always was a pain in the arse. Mind you, at least he actually had some facts at his command most of the time, even if they were always a bit one-eyed...

Shall we now change the subject or shall we risk adding to Dave's buggered thread count...

How about if we reach beyond mere thread-buggering here and see if we can determine who holds the buggered *life* record?

I'm pretty sure that many would claim a buttered life record but it they can waste time on here, they can't be doing too bad :-)

I used to think any contribution from me was the kiss of death for a thread which would then die. I understand DtG's concerns. I now look at the people posting to a thread before I read the contributions. If I see certain names appearing repeatedly I know it will be a "'Tis" "'Tisn't" childish spat and read no further.

I see The Gobby ex-Squaddie and The Village-Idiot of Hertford have finally buggered the 'Brexit #2' thread.

It's perfectly possible to ignore that pair of fuckwits and their hangers-on. Just. Ignore. The. Trolls.

Buggered, buttered, battered. What's it matter?

Mind you, I suspect If I asked for a buggered balm cake or buggered sausage at the chippy I may be shown the door :-)
