As far as I am aware the shift of Corporate headquarters to the Netherlands is by no means a certainty, so I suspect threats of shifting production are merely just threats.

I stockpiled marmite several years ago when they decided to introduce up-side-down squeezy bottles and for THEIR convenience made all the marmite soft enough to 'squeeze'. It no longer had that nice firm untouched surface when you opened a new jar. Do those squeezy bottles still exist or have they been totally rejected by marmite lovers?

Think about it - make it in Europe and European sales will be affected by any tariffs. Whereas in the UK consumption isn't about how much it costs. We are talking about a religion after all..........

Ya gotta give them marketing guys credit. The brand is so well known they can muck about with the label and everyone knows they are buying the genuine article (made wherever) or saving their money (and palette).

And just to annoy traditionaists, don't they get their yeast from Burton Breweries, the biggest of which is now American - Coors.

Coors blimey mate. Marmite comes from America.............

Marmite rules! No need to stockpile. If production is moved to the EU I suspect that the UK will not apply tariffs on its import but if it stays in the UK, the EU will apply tariffs on imports to there. Sadly one of the effects of brexit may be this type of job loss.

Marmite is made under licence here in New Zealand and the local version tastes like total shite. If production moves it WILL taste different and they will lose umpteen customers. They have to import the original English stuff here under the ÖurMate"brand to satisfy the ex pats here who can't stand the ersatz local stuff.

Imperial Leather Soap hit the skids long ago. I think there's a soap made in the third world that purports to be like the original, but ain't.
The only marmite I will accept is Sanitarium Brand from NZ. I have a jar that dates back to the late 70s and I think the stuff inside has crusted through.

Yeah, stuff changes. Soon the cars will drive us (and about time, we've got youtubes to watch!)

Best way to eat/ appreciate Marmite is to spread it thinly on toast underneath either scrambled or poached eggs! Fab! Add baked beans if you must.
Otherwise it has become a (deomcratic?) thing - Love it or loathe it.
Or irrepressibly associated with that Marmitevellous song, "The gravy's with the Bovril, and the Marmite's with the jam".

I hate eggs.

Take some left over mash and heat with a touch of oil in frying pan. Make some toast and spread with Marmite (butter or whatever first if you wish). Put the pototo stuff on the toast, adding more marmite, and/or cheese on top and grill a little.

My Irish Auntie Lily (the one who always had a fag magically attached to her lower lip while she talked, with the ash ready to drop - Fag Ash Lil in fact!) used to add a smidgeon of Marmite to mince/beef casserole/hot pot etc. She said it 'gave it flavour' which it did, but I can't say I liked it.
My mother never did this and her cooking was excellent.

I like the natural taste of the meat juices Tattie. Like you, I don't appreciate stuff like Marmite being added. I like it on bread, toast, crackers etc. but NOT in gravy!
My mother (who was Auntie Lily's sister) used to wonder if all those cigarettes (she smoked 50 a day!!) had blunted Auntie's taste buds, so that she was seeking a stronger flavour for her cookery. Neither of my parents ever smoked, so our taste buds were in good shape.

I too make my gravy with the meat juices - I just can't see the point of Bisto or similar concoctions. If I have vegetarians to feed, I make a sauce based on butter and the liquid from the cooking vegetables.
I smoked about five and a half cigarettes in my teens, but am no more tempted to try any more than I am to use Bisto.

Hahaha olddude! I can imagine a children's book, 'The Hunting Of The Marmite'! Hiding behind a tree and shooting the jars as they gallop past.

When as a child I first looked at the ingredients listed on the jars, I was surprised to see it was entirely vegetarian. It doesn't contain any meat, just salt, yeast and vegetable extract. Probably not terribly good for the health.

Whereas Bovril HAS got meat in it, as well as the ubiquitous salt, yeast and additives.

I wonder if people who love Marmite actually do so because it brings back fond memories of their childhoods? I love cod liver oil (!) because my mother would dose us every day with a teaspoonful. And I adored Tizer, cheddar cheese on toast, scrambled eggs, bubble-and-squeak, tinned sardines... all Post-War goodies during the fifties.

I still eat most of those, though I have sardines less often as they seem to 'hang around'. We had tinned pilchards regularly as well, and fish paste, 'luncheon meat', tinned peaches and tinned pineapple.
However, Tizer is now horrible. They have obviously changed the recipe.
Remembering these reminds me of time spent in a student hostel in the 1960s in Barcelona. One day one of the Spanish students said he had a special treat - something English he had come across in a shop, called 'esseleethedd peenay applay' - it took us a little time to work out what it was.

"Bubble" is still so popular that if you ask for it in a proper cafe it has probably run out; although many cafe's with foreign proprietors sell a strange imitation, with peas and other veg instead of cabbage, and fried in oil (or butter in better class establishments).
Try a spot of Marmite in whatever you use for frying now that bacon has no usable fat. Wonderful for mushrooms.
Incidently, does anyone know what "Bubble" is actually slang for?

I forgot to mention good old Bird's Custard Powder. I still use that to make lovely custard to pour on a rhubarb crumble or an apple pie. It's the only type of sauce I'd choose over fresh double cream.
(But I usually whisk in some cream into the custard after it's thickened!)

Sen the most commonly made sauce at home is a strong cheese one to go with brassica or leeks and I'd not swap that for cream!

I can prefer the Birds custard powder to a tin especially for a fruit crumble or a syrup sponge (can't remember the last time Pip made one - I should learn...) but mostly opt for the tinned stuff, often through laziness, though I'd prefer the latter with a fruit salad.

I microwave the powder these days and cocked it up last time. It was so thick that a builders trowel would have been a better tool than a spoon to eat it with. Sill it's better than what can happen with the saucepan method if you are careless (or perhaps use a cheap thin tinny pan). The slightest bit of burn and the whole pan full is ruined.

As for cream and custard, I like that but would do it differently. I'd rather put the pot/jug out and pour (or let others pour) a bit of cream on top of the custard and, personally would have more "creamier" mouthfuls and more "custardy" mouthfuls.

I have a very thick, non-stick pan Jon, and use a plastic fish slice to stir the custard on the bottom. I use the same pan to make strong cheese sauce, then guess what I add after the cheese sauce has thickened?
I can't think why I don't seem to lose weight... :)

I thought the custard powder was for people who are too lazy to make custard using milk/cream and eggs.

When I was a child we used to go to Weymouth, and along the beach at the pebbly part there was a place where you could get trays of tea (proper cups, no plastic) and ice cream that smelled and tasted like Birds custard. Maybe that's what they made it out of.

I've some vague memory of someone commenting elsewhere years ago that he liked the Mr Whippy as a child and later felt guilty as he learned this did not use cream and used a veg oil and he had a local Italian place making the proper stuff. Or something along those lines.

I don't remember what the NZ version tasted like, but NZ beer is truly disgusting, so that would figure.

I don't think the Sanitarium one was called Marmite. Sanitarium in NZ is the food-biz wing of the Seventh Day Adventists. We had SDA neighbours when I was a kid and they used to get a monthly truckload of Sanitarium products delivered. I don't recall ever seeing them eat so I don't know what they did with it all.

I've probably commented on this before, Jack but can't see a mention in this thread so apologies if I've missed a post.

I am not aware of a NZ product but was aware of the oz Vegemite vs UK Marmite debates. I got "brother in oz" to send me a jar of the "proper" Vegemite. As far as I'm concerned, that while a touch different in texture and taste, the two are interchangeable and if say I was in Australia, I'd not be on a quest to find Marmite.

I think it's all "beer sludge" and can only guess that NZ's own version would also be similar.

Possibly funny btw though, the way some products can change. I can't remember what it was but some sort of probably globally Nestle add milk drink. "niece in oz" managed to get some of the Australian stuff and a puzzled me did find a wikipedia page saying it used different "recipes" for different areas...

Also btw, is it me or did Cadburys Dairy Milk and their buttons change taste after what started with an American take over? Maybe a change in my palate but they seem to have a sort of "sickliness" in taste these days compared with what I remember.

I'm glad to see that Kelly's Cornish ice-dream contains real cream, milk and vanilla. I love Kelly's.
I think Marmite contains yeast extract, so it might well be a by-product of beer production.
I could easily make 'real' custard Jos, but it's the nostalgia that makes me keep on with Bird's.

Oooh yes Jon, we know Ronaldo's in Sheringham very well. On our way down to the sea, we always stop at their little window and get two vanilla cones. Then we lean on the sea wall (with those lovely pictures of historic times, fishermen, lifeboats etc) and look out at the horizon.

Husband never fails to say exactly the same things EVERY time:-

I was wrong about Bird's custard being for people who are too lazy to use milk and eggs. Apparently it was invented in 1837 by Alfred Bird because his wife was allergic to eggs.
My mother always bought Pearce Duff's custard powder instead of Bird's, and Rowntree's cocoa instead of Cadbury's - she said they tasted better (but it might have been because they came from Yorkshire instead of Birmingham).
I never could abide that smoo-ooth ice cream squirted out of a tube. It reminded me of Brylcream. I like a bit of texture in my ice cream, but yes, Kelley's is OK.

Hmm, that leads to another thought. Very rarely made here but if I wanted a "chocolate" drink, I'd take the cocoa powder over any "drinking chocolate" any day. May take a bit longer heating up over a pan with some milk but the result is good.
