Subject: Tune Add: Tunes from Burnley, Pendle, Hyndburn and
From: GUEST,Gin Crewe

Malkin Morris is based around Burnley, Pendle, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley in Lancashire. We are researching local morris and step dances, and tunes of this area. The search for tunes in particular is proving tricky.

Any advice as to where we might look or suggestions of tunes local to this very specific area would be gratefully received. We have tried EFDSS and the Winder Collection. Any other suggestions?

I saw a Morris side dancing to Ted Edward's "Coalhole Cavalry". Maybe you could adapt "Old Pendle" for dancing?

idk, I'm not a musician.

Have you asked Andy Hornby?
enormous links page

or maybe he'd know some individual tunes?

Do you already know Colne Royal? I think that would be in the right area and as far as I know Colne Royal Morris no longer exist.

FSJ 1968 has a whole section on clog dancing from Nelson complete with dance steps photos and I think some tunes. (Yes I do have a copy) You know where I am Ginny.

Sorry it was 1967 not 68. Sammy Cash and Upton Hobson are names that crop up.
Upton might be related to Billy Hobson (The Painter) he's still knocking around in the Colne pubs.
There is 'The Weavers Jingle' noted plus various written sources to the dance tunes and steps.
There is a nice photo of Henry Whittaker ( of Nelson) dancing. He sang the Weavers Jingle while putting his clogs on.
No doubt you already have the Lancashire Hornpipe.
You could do worse than have a word with Sid C. he's a mine of info.

Ask the old people. Two frequent nodes in the web of culture are the churches and the bars. Start there.

Have a recording device handy in case somebody remembers a tune for you.

Does your public library collect local history? What do they have?

Just realised that there are some really good answers here and I haven't looked for a while. Thank you, all. I do have the Julian Pilling book and some of his tunes but I'm sure there is more!

My gran (died 1965) once told me that she'd lived in Every Street in Nelson...

Gin Crewe

Mudcat would be a great place to share what other knowledge you've gathered.
