Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: Doug Chadwick Date: 27 Sep 18 - 07:46 PM Well it was fast, I'll give you that, but good? - not for me. He may have had smoke coming off the bow but I would have preferred to have been able to make out what he was actually playing. He was playing notes, not a tune. DC |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: Jim Carroll Date: 27 Sep 18 - 08:03 PM " not for me. " Amen to that Summed up very nicely in a conversation we had with veteran fiddle player unior Crehan when we asked his opinion of an over-fast young fiddle player "He'll be great when he's too old to travel that fast" Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: leeneia Date: 27 Sep 18 - 08:03 PM That's great, Dan. Not only fast, but you can hear the lonesome whistle blow at the same time. |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: leeneia Date: 27 Sep 18 - 08:53 PM Now I wanta click-clack around the Appalachians, over the piedmont and down the shore to Florida in January. Because that's what this piece is about - a steam train, clicking, clacking, squealing, rumbling and blowing a melodious steam whistle. And no, it doesn't go moderato. |

Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: olddude Date: 27 Sep 18 - 11:04 PM Ok try this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69dcFjW0RZ4 |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: leeneia Date: 27 Sep 18 - 11:31 PM If you compare the speed of the fiddle with the speed of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bjrV2rjeSI You see Michael Coleman is not far wrong. Take time to enjoy the whistle, both the strong notes and the mournful. Notice the humble towns but the beautiful towns of the Great Plains. |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: GUEST,Keith Price Date: 28 Sep 18 - 03:11 AM I think Doug and Jim have missed the point here. This is "The Orange Blossom Special" a descriptive piece about a train, think Seamus Ennis and the "Fox Chase" BTW that's 13 minutes long. |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: GUEST,Keith Price Date: 28 Sep 18 - 03:17 AM I should add Doug he makes a decent job of it. |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 28 Sep 18 - 02:53 PM I'm sure we can all find different versions, but for what it's worth I really like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWgVT1Yq9lo |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: leeneia Date: 28 Sep 18 - 09:58 PM That's a good one too, Captain Swing. |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: Will Fly Date: 29 Sep 18 - 03:35 PM "Orange Blossom Special" is, IMO, a slightly hackneyed tune - so it needs something to beef it up a little. This version is very much in the Sonny Terry "Train Blues" tradition - an impressionist version of a train journey, but on fiddle, rather than blues harp. Not my favourite version, but I applaud the interpretation. |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: leeneia Date: 29 Sep 18 - 10:00 PM Oops. I meant "humble towns but beautiful CLOUDS of the Great Plains." The engineer of the 866 has a master's degree in steam whistle operation. |

Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: FreddyHeadey Date: 30 Sep 18 - 07:19 PM No whistles but as this just popped up on some notification, a steam related tune : Full Steam Ahead peakfiddler (Chris Perry) https://youtu.be/Bbhcw--0muI |
Subject: RE: Holy smoly that’s fiddlin From: leeneia Date: 30 Sep 18 - 10:39 PM Hi, Freddy. It's a good tune but lack onomatapeia. Donuel, I heard your guy on YouTube playing "the Crow" as one of the Steep Canyon Rangers. He's good. |
