The October Press Room Shanty, Forebitter, and Foc's'l Ballad Session-In-Exile will be this Saturday, October 20th from 3:30 to 7:30 at the Continental Restaurant & Bar -- just north of Dover 2 blocks from the intersection of Rtes. 108 and Rte. 9. See previous threads for address and directions.

This will be last monthly shanty singaround at the Continental -- November's gathering will be back at the renovated and re-opened PRESS ROOM in Portsmouth, NH!!!

For ease of searching for past threads, our Press Room-in-Exile threads have all said "Press Room" in the header even though we met at Liar's Bench and then the Continental.

The weekly Anglo-Celtic trad session will also be returning to The Press Room, but it will migrate to Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 5:00. And I will continue to run a trad session at the Continental on Fridays from 4:30-8:00. (Or maybe 5:00-8:00.)

Hope to see you all at the Continental this Saturday! Next month at The Press Room!

I'm still working out details with The Press Room. I just got an email suggesting the hours for the shanty sing be 2:00-6:00 when we go back to The Press Room in November.

Would this be a problem for anyone?

Charlie, the November shanty sing will be November 17th -- and the hours will be changing to 2:00 to 6:00 to free up tables for the Press Room's dinner trade.

The first weekly session held at The Press Room will be Sunday, November 18th from 2:00 to 5:00.

Mike James, a maritime singer from Port Townsend, Washington, will probably take the prize today for the longest commute to the session.

We met three years ago at the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival and is in this neck of the woods leaf peeping...and trying to catch some music. He landed at the trad session last night at the continental and will be back today for the sea music singaround.

I had good intentions.
Went to a friend's gallery opening, hung around too long, and didn't have the energy to get to Dover.

There is a very cool place just over the Maine side of the currently non-existent Sarah Long Bridge, painted remarkably. It houses Lost Coast Treasure Hunters, Good Luck Gallery and Nest.
Just don't go there before the session, or you'll get stuck.

You missed it, guys! There were only three of us (Mike, Don, and me), but we sure had fun. We probably talked about the songs as much as we sang, but we got in quite a few songs, considering. Mike sang a few Don and I had never heard and we sang a few that were new to him.

I've already said that the crew was just the three of us -- Don Hale from south of Boston, Mike James from Port Townsend, Washington, and me (from Nottingham, a hop, skip, and two jumps from Dover).

We talked at least as much as we sang. And I caught myself a couple times, being wrapped up in discussing the songs or coming up with a related song or line, neglecting to write down a song I sang. (I think I listed everyone else's.) If I forgot, maybe I can reconstruct what and when I sang it.

I have to pass it on to Jeff Warner who, after he gave a 1920s citation when he sang it at PMFF, I told him about Arthur Conan Doyle's mention of it by title in his 1880 journal when he was surgeon on a whaler out of Peterhead.)
