Cleaning my PC

I'll just mention.. these budget price PCs turned out far better than expected,
considering when I bought them they each cost less than an average 10" android tablet...

So if they both conspire to crash occasionally.. I can put up with it...

dusted...???

errrmm.. never...

However, the cases don't seem to get hot,
would that be a benefit of the external power supplies...???

I haven't been in my event viewer for a while. But it explains the problem I had back in August! I should have looked back then and taken my own advice.

DaveRo - I've done my best to disable all auto updates and tasks...

.. that I'm aware of and could find..

But possible there might always be tricky little system buggers lurking in the background...???

I'm as certain as I can be that no virus or malware is the cause,
I never install more than a few necessary programs on the 'Shopping' PC,
and try to exercise due caution on the 'dodgy' one...

I bought extra memory for both, and would hope this might help,
but I can't remember where I put the parcel after it was delivered...

Maybe they're both trying to do an automatic software update - Windows, Lenovo, Java, Adobe, some piece of bloatware... That might happen at the same frequency but not simultaneously. Perhaps they periodically try to do the same update and freeze.

I've known USB problems to cause mouse and keyboard freeze ups. One PC froze when I tried to use a USB 2 hub in a USB 3 socket. This was cured by using a USB 3 hub. But this problem occurred pretty much right away rather than after being on for ages. Is it avoided if you switch off overnight and reboot next day?

.. and the PCs are powered by similar external supplies as laptops...

.. and I have to reboot by switching off and back on again
using the button on the front panel..

For any considering power supply theory...
Infrequently, we get power dips that make lights and TV flicker,
but not sufficient to cause PCs to swith off...

cheers mudcat mates...

Yeah - realise now I left out some obvious info...

Both are presumably from same or close factory batch, running win 8.1 [Bing]

They are the LENOVO 90BX0018UK Lenovo E50-00
budget price PCs that were sold off at low clearance prices a couple years ago...

Basically, laptop components inside a tower case...

2.40 gigahertz Intel Pentium J2900

Now I've probably gone a bit too overboard with tech info..
But it's very easy to copy all that off Belarc Adviser...
Besides, like my mrs is nosey about neighbours houses,
Computer geeks enjoy a snoop inside other folk's PC boxes...

Your combined suggestions remind me of stuff I used to be interested in several years ago
when I was teaching myself how to be an expert PC user..
But all that has kind of drifted away as family life took up most of my time..

But I do appreciate you all jogging my memory about Win system reports...

I keep Win Defender,
and the usual malware programs like Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware updated every day..

One PC is used only for internet shopping on known websites, the other for mudcat and other dodgy web surfing...
Neither has shown any signs of virus or malware so far...

[The Belarc Adviser report snapshot is taken off the 'dodgy' PC...]

I got cheesed off with bloated Norton and Mcafee years ago, and reckon Win Defender aint much worse...

BT keep offering me free Mcafee - but I'd need serious convincing it's worth installing again...!!!

So.. my most realistic guess for crashes...
is I always have too many Chrome tabs open on both PCs, eating up limited memory...???

But why they crash in the same way within hours or days is a mystery..

or perhaps the reason bleedin obvious to a computer techie...???

I'm thinking it isn't power as the OP mentioned that he actively had to reboot. more a case of non-responsiveness of a machine that it still powered on rather than one that is turned off.

Based on some assumptions, so I could be wrong on that of course but PFR could expand or clarify I'm sure

Sorry I have been not doing this sort of work for too long and forgot the most obvious first port of call.

Have you looked at Event Viewer on each of the machines. I've included a link in case it's not something you use a lot.

You should be able to see the event or events leading up to when it ceases to work and it should give you a good idea - especially if there are two machines and both have similar symptoms and causes - of where to look next.

Do you think it could be some sort of power supply outage, which would affect both machines at the same time? Not, perhaps to cause an immediate crash but enough to start what would add up to a crash later?

There are power supplies that are supposed to protect against this sort of thing. Do you use one?

As a second thought. You could set up team viewer or similar between the machines. You might then be able to control one machine from the other even though keyboard and mouse are not available from the actual machine.

Unless it has actually completely crashed.

I have run teamviewer sessions between machines for days before now and it doesn’t affect things too adversely.

The other thought is you could open task manager on the machine that you predict will fail with high cpu processes at the top. You might then be able to see the process even though you can’t move the mouse or the keyboard. I presume the monitor is still on and showing?

If the one follows the other you could try setting off and running Process Monitor on your machine as you have a warning that it is about to happen. Unless it is coincidence!. It gives a huge amount of info about exactly what is happening. I used to use it when tracking obscure software faults. The sort where the software programmer would say “it can’t possibly be doing X”. Out with the process monitor and the response was “well I appreciate that it can’t possibly do that but have a look at this...”

Sneaky, I know. It does produce a LOT of info but would tell you exactly what we’re the last things that happened

If you leave the machine alone for an indeterminate amount of time does it recover? The one thing I’m not sure is whether a process monitor captures the crash and manages to write to disc before you turn the machine off

I'd guess they're being affected by the same bug, although not precisely at the same time. If everything freezes it's not necessarily anything to do with the mouse, that's just the first thing you notice.

What's your operating system, and do you have any security software?
Is there any correlation with the software that's loaded at the time, even if you're not actually using it?
Anything unusual shown on the lights? Like continuous disc or ethernet activity (although you may not have specific LEDs for these, cursed be the manufacturers who dropped them)?
Can you do a normal restart or do you have to force a power down?
Is your router set to allow any sort of remote access?

I have two identical Lenovo PCs kept switched on and running 24/7...
plugged into a multi plug-board from a single electric socket...
They are not joined in any network,
just wired independently via ethernet cables to the same BT broadband router.

One has a USB mouse - the other, a PS/2 port mouse...

[Both have identical USB keyboards...]

Once every couple of weeks or so,
one of the mice arrows will suddenly without warning
freeze and stick on the screen.
The keyboard also crashes..
This necessitates a reboot.

The perplexing thing though, is quite soon after..
the other PC usually suffers the same problem...

Is this just weird coincidence.. or some kind of uncanny PC sympathetic telepathic connection...??????

It happens when I am typing, or if a PC is left idle fora while...
No obvious pattern to any of this...
