Hello! Dick Gaughan's website is suspended! I know he is in recovery from a stroke back in 2016 and I am sure we all wish him well. His site was a treasure of lyrics and tunes..I wonder if he is updating it?

If it is a commercial site then the fees may need to be paid. Can you share with us what the usual URL was and I can do some research?

There's a link on his wikipedia page.

What IS good news is that Dick has been able to participate in the concerts around Scotland in the "Far, Far from Ypres" series. I believe he sings at least one song in it, and plays guitar. Looking forward to the final concert of the run, which takes place on Sunday 11th November in Edinburgh's Usher Hall, on the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Dick originally recorded this song for the album "True and Bold" which I believe was about miners and their struggles (I don't have it).
I wonder if this was adapted to be a song about a young man going to war (I find it hard to hear the words in places). On the cd of the original show he sang "Why Old Men Cry"
Good to see him performing again; his voice is OK, but playing the guitar looks like a real struggle. A lasting result of the stroke he had a couple of years ago, I presume.

Sadly, many discussion forums have now become defunct.

The old Footstompin' forum is now inaccessible too

http://forum.handsupfortrad.co.uk/

There hasn't been much interest there for some time.
Nigel Gatherer's forum is still running but there is little activity there either.

http://www.nigelgatherer.com/forum/

While I'm aware that Dick has had some serious health issues and Molly may be busy doing other things, there is obviously a wider malaise as far as this type of medium is concerned.
Everybody seem to be on Twitter and Facebook these days. I quite like Twitter but detest Facebook.
However, both of these just tend to be "echo chambers" where everyone ends up agreeing with everyone else and "blocking out" or "unfriending" those people who may have different opinions than their own. I much prefer the old traditional forums as a place for good discussion and debate.

Footstompin worked very well when Elizabeth Thoumire was running it, despite being the software equivalent of something held together with string and duct tape. When her son Simon took it over, shut it down and replaced it with "handsupfortrad", it became solely a promotional vehicle for his own activities and understandably attracted almost no interest from anyone else.

The more durable forums have been those that don't centre around a single performer or group.

I presume that the contents of a website that is taken offline because of payment default is cached for some time before being deleted, but for how long is this likely to be? The Gaughan website has been down for a few weeks now.
The forum was almost unused latterly, so it's loss is not so important, but the rest of the website, with bio, discography need to be kept and in part updated.

I used to like the Footstompin forum, but there were a few on there who tried Elizabeth's patience more than somewhat and gave her rather too much to do as a moderator. Quite a demanding job, with little or no return, I would think.

I only visted Dick's site a few times, mainly to get song words, which he was very generous with. (As well as using Mudcat, of course!)
I was also a Footstomper, and enjoyed using that site, especially as most of it was a bit more local: however Mudcat has its global attractions! As on this site too, some of the banter overstepped the mark, as graham t has suggested.

Praying for a full recovery and one more concert tour in the states, if not, a DVD compilation would be nice! I wonder if there are any clips of him during the "Coppers and Brass" Period???? Most of all, if none of those things happen, I wish him well and happiness!

Onny was Charlie Todd, I think. Mandolin player. I never met him but he emailed me a few times. (The nickname was from "on yer tod"). Seems to have been a nice bloke. How he came by all that inside information (which he couldn't resist commenting on) I have no idea.

Dick never had much interest in other people's forums, though he may rarely have posted here.

Think the Hands Up for Trad forum that replaced Footstompin must also be defunct noo: can get on HUFT website, but when I click on Forum, either nothing happens or I get an Error 500 message.
Sheena is still very much oot there, busy singin' and putting on concerts in the Wighton Centre and Unicorn in Dundee: you can find her on Facebook.

Or even wuman!
That was some concert: Usher Hall totally sold out right up to the rafters, standing ovation and everyone stayed standing for the final song "Only Remembered".
Dick's song, "Childhood's End" went well and he joined in some of the other songs. He looked a little weary, I thought, but who wouldn't be after the big schedule of concerts. Wasn't close enough to comment on guitar. But good to see him back in action.
Incidentally, the entire script including song lyrics is available to anyone who wants it: the intention being that schools might put on their own productions, perhaps including some of their own local relatives - OK to change names in the script. Use of the script is free, thanks to Ian McCalman, but the usual provisos apply to public performance of any copyrighted songs.

Is there any way that the Dick Gaughan website might be archived someplace else - a national centre, a University? Preferably with open access? His website was a live-times work. His enquiry into folk music traditions and everything else he brought forward - this is a legacy that really needs to live on. I am late to this debate. But my background is in arts development. Who to contact to open up this enquiry?

What made Dick's forum work, was Dick. The success of that forum very much depended on the personality of its moderator. We moderators are good for something, ya know.

Most of the stuff on Dick's website can be seen through the Wayback Machine, but I don't know how long this is kept for or whether it can be copied other than by doing a screen shot on every page. The most interesting things for me are the song notes and the background to the making of the albums, all too many of which seem to have ended up becoming unavailable. Handful of Earth was made after a long period of mental trauma and Live in Edinburgh after recovering from a period which started with him totally losing his voice half way through a gig. He's clearly had a very difficult life at times, culminating in what would seem to be a solo career ending stroke.
I don't agree with all of his political views, but admire his integrity. His is certainly a voice we could do with at the moment. I saw him live a few times but could and should have seen him more.

I wonder which of his political views you didn't agree with, Joe. He's a leftie for sure but I find his views to be measured and eloquently-expressed in his songs, often a little too directly for my taste (I'm more of a Woody aficionado in that regard), but I have lots of his albums and I cherish them. I saw him three times.

As for Molly the moderator, and speaking as someone she occasionally growled at, she ran a very tight ship and wouldn't have put up with some of the below-line nonsense that infests this forum these days. And she did it on her own with Dick's full blessing.
