‘The Road to Peterloo’ is a current musical presentation performed by Pete Coe, Brian Peters and Laura Smyth telling the story of the Peterloo Massacre. I believe that it may have had some performances at festivals in the summer. Did anyone see it and what was it like?
I would like to see it somewhere near where I live in Hull and if anyone living this way agrees then perhaps you could suggest it to your local venue ? Here is a link but information is limited

Laura, Brian and Pete present a trove of freshly-discovered material, with ballads sourced from Alison Morgan’s new book on the broadsides of the day, and from their own research, with many set to original tunes.

Ballads and songs of Peterloo by Alison Morgan is an edited collection of poems and songs written following the Peterloo Massacre in 1819. This collection, which includes over seventy poems, were published either as broadsides or in radical periodicals and newspapers. Notes to support the reading of the texts are provided, but they also stand alone, conveying the original publications without diluting their authenticity.

Following an introduction outlining the massacre, the radical press and broadside ballad, the poems are grouped into six sections according to theme. Shelley's Masque of Anarchy is included as an appendix in acknowledgement of its continuing significance to the representation of Peterloo. This book is primarily aimed at students and lecturers of Romanticism and social history.

The Coe/Peters/Smyth Road to Peterloo show has not been performed yet. It is due to be unveiled in 2019, to mark the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre.
Meanwhile, there is the Alison Morgan book (and she is also giving a paper at the EFDSS Song Conference, 10-11 November 2018 - Alison's paper is on the Saturday). And there's Mike Leigh's film Peterloo which goes on general release on 2 November. The film has some music.

At one time everyone did that period for O level.
Agitation and unrest after 1915

Peterloo, The Cato Street Conspiracy, The Mask of Anarchy by Shelley, Castleraragh and Canning...

I wonder if they do it nowadays...

I missed this thread when it appeared last October.

We're now well into the project, with a whole pile of fresh material arranged, rehearsed and ready to record in April. As Henry mentioned, several of the songs are sourced from Alison Morgan's fascinating book, 'Ballads and Songs of Peterloo'.

Live dates start in June, and we will be taking the performance to several festivals including Sidmouth, Broadstairs, Whitby and Hartlepool. We'll also be putting on a Manchester show at Central Library on August 1st, and in London at Cecil Sharp House on October 9th.

Dates so far:

Jun 8, GLOSSOP Labour Club
Jun 9, MELLOR BROOK Community Centre
Jul 12-14, HALSWAY MANOR Ballads & Broadsides w/e
Jul 20/21, CUMBRIA Music on the Marr
Aug 1, MANCHESTER Central Library
Aug 4, SIDMOUTH Folk Week
Aug 12, BROADSTAIRS Folk Week
Aug 18, NEWCASTLE, Tyneside Irish Centre
Aug 20, WHITBY Folk Week
Sep 15, BROMLEY CROSS Folk at the Barlow
Sep 22, BEDFORD, The Place
Oct 9, LONDON Cecil Sharp House
Oct 12, ABBOTTS LANGLEY Community Centre
Oct 20, HARTLEPOOL Folk Festival
Oct 31, HUDDERSFIELD University, Phipps Hall
Nov 3, HALIFAX, Square Chapel

Nothing in Hull for the OP - as yet! Still open to offers.

Just to bring this thread up to date:

The Road to Peterloo is more or less sold out at Glossop on Saturday. However I think there are still tickets available for Mellor Brook (which is near Blackburn) on Sunday.

Our new CD of the material is out this week and will be launched at Glossop.

NB. The Bedford date on September 22nd has been postponed, new date TBA.

The 'Road to Peterloo' performance at Manchester Central Library on Thursday, August 1st (5.30 pm) still has a few tickets left:

The Road to Peterloo: Manchester

Over the following three weeks we'll be at Sidmouth, Broadstairs and Whitby festivals, and Tyneside Irish Centre on August 18th.

We're also performing some of the songs from the show to accompany lectures by Dr Alison Morgan about the Peterloo ballads, at Ashton Central Library on July 29th (2 pm) and Stockport Library on August 2nd (7 pm).

You’ve a better memory than me Brian. As for the late Dave Rawlinson; scruffy hair/beard, chopped off denim jeans and sandals throughout the year and smoking un-tipped Woodbines - a more unlikely person to become Chief Executive of Salisbury City Council I can’t imagine!

What a great guy Dave was, and, yes, I also loved the contrast between his everyday persona and high-flying career.

I’m told he always scrubbed up well! A long shot but do you have the words for (or do even remember) his song “Bonzo” - a parody of “Ranzo”. i.e. “Have you seen the little dog squatting in your neighbours garden - Bonzo.”

S’pose this is getting a bit off topic!

Yes it is drifting a bit, but oh well... Yes, I remember 'Bonzo', but I don't have the words (I recall the chorus changed to 'Banzai!' at one point). I did use to sing Dave's song 'The Lost Fourteen Hundred'.

Meanwhile, 'The Road to Peterloo' concert is at Manchester Central Library tonight and we're probably looking at a sell-out.

Then tomorrow we're providing music for Alison Morgan's lecture at Stockport Library.

Sidmouth performance on Sunday evening at the Manor Pavilion.

Looking forward to tonight's performance - and listening to the CD as I write. But I'm hoping it's 6.00 (as it says on the tickets), not 5.30 (as you said upthread, Brian!).

Still hoping to go tomorrow; there’s just a little matter of a collapsing dam between me and the event! At least the weather forecast has improved.

Well that was a waste of time! Sorry Brian. (Hope you made it?)

I set off at 17.30 for what usually takes half an hour at the most and it seems that the plod has closed the roads over every bridge for miles downstream of the dam. Talk about risk averse; nothing has happened yet! - its just like closing all the local police stations; if you can’t report a crime, it makes their crime figures look better!

The whole world was driving around minor roads trying to get somewhere/home. After sitting in a mile long queue for half an hour, at 18.30 and still 4miles from the venue, I plotted a different route and came home again.

It was just like they’d moved the M25 200 miles north and added scenery!

Cheers Brian. Things have worsened since Friday as they’ve now cut us off from Macclesfield as well (e.g. our only alternative hospital for miles). The annoying thing is that nobody in the media has thought to ask questions about the wider implications of police paranoia.
