Subject: Brazilian Fascism From: Jack Campin Date: 29 Oct 18 - 12:55 PM The significance of Bolsanaro's election slipped right past me until it was a done deal. This looks like being the most nightmarish regime to rule any part of the Americas since the Conquistadors. Did anybody see any English language media report what was coming? |

Subject: RE: BS: Brazilian Fascism From: robomatic Date: 29 Oct 18 - 05:48 PM OKay I was gonna start a thread with this in mind, but I'll say it here: Brazil today, Venezuela tomorrow. |

Subject: RE: BS: Brazilian Fascism From: Mossback Date: 30 Oct 18 - 09:20 AM Brazil today, Venezuela tomorrow. And the US of A next week. Its off to a great start -Trumpism - on the road to fascism. |

Subject: RE: BS: Brazilian Fascism From: Thompson Date: 30 Oct 18 - 10:44 AM Yeah, there was loads of coverage in it in the Irish papers, and the English ones too, I think. |
Subject: RE: BS: Brazilian Fascism From: CupOfTea Date: 31 Oct 18 - 02:27 PM I think many of us have been too embroiled in voting issues in the US that are critical to have paid much attention to Brazil. Voter suppression, in Georgia and on Native American reservations, our own stock of horrific candidates, trying to get information about local judges' races, gerrymandering issue (in Ohio), trying to get the pissed-off- at -the- Democratic- Party Bernicrats to vote and not sit this election out. All that and maneuvering our anger around what the latest outrage by 45 and his minions at the complete gutting of the EPA - yeah, we should be worrying about the Amazon rainforest, but when it's our drinking water in danger, we're looking to our own back yard/lake/river carefully. White supremacist murders, bomb threats, slanders, & power plays: It's exhausting just to deal with our own issues - I want to scream so often. I did hear a bit about this race, and this candidate, but without a more nuanced understanding of Brazilian politics, had no clue how this would go. Horrific, if even a fraction of the words and threats attributed to him are true and in context. It all brings me back to another strong reason why THIS election season in the US is critically important: we may have to fight fascism with more challenges coming from abroad, rather than external support for democratic rule. Heaven help us all. Joanne in Cleveland |
Subject: RE: BS: Brazilian Fascism From: Thompson Date: 01 Nov 18 - 10:17 AM The latest thing is a Brazilian mayor who wants police to shoot "criminals" from helicopters. I don't want to live in this world any more. |
Subject: RE: BS: Brazilian Fascism From: Mossback Date: 01 Nov 18 - 12:39 PM Well, hell, they do it to wolves in Alaska; pretty sure Sarah Palin has taken part. Wolves, criminals, what's the diff? Wait 'til Trump hears about this - he'll establish a helicopter strike force by Executive Order. |
