SUCH SAD NEWS. I've just heard that John Taylor died last night.
John , organiser of REDCAR and SALTBURN Folk Festivals and the CUTTY WREN Folk Club had been involved in Folk Music on Teesside since the mid sixties. I have no details yet as to the reason for his death only that he had been in hospital for some time and was thought to be improving. His daeth has come as a great shock to his family and friends.RIP JOHN

Very sorry to hear this. My condolences to his family.
I'll repeat what I wrote on the thread concerning his illness.
Johnny Taylor was very generous to me, a Canadian who attended the
Redcar Folk festival in 1976. When he found out I did a radio program on
a small radio station, he introduced me to Vin Garbut, Willie Scott, and Les Barker, among others.
I have always had fond memories of his warm and welcoming personality and his kindness.
RIP John.

That's three titans of the north-east's folk scene all gone within the space of a few years, in Bettsy, Vin and now Johnny. Each is a huge loss. Johnny was as nice a person as you'd meet on the UK folk scene (and the UK folk scene is littered with particularly nice people, so that's quite a statement to make). My sympathies and condolences go to his family and friends. We've lost a true gentleman and a huge, huge contributor to the music we love.

A sad loss indeed.

I haven't seen him for many's a year now, but in my younger days on Teesside I knew him both at the Redcar folk club and the festival. As eveyone says, as nice a man as you could meet.

Condolences to his family.

Mick

Very sorry to hear this. John was an excellent club organiser and a great help to me when I was involved with the Sunday Sun in the North East; always on time with a long list of guests appearing at The Cutty Wren. It was also nice to meet up with him at the various festivals at that time. Condolences to his family.

Sad news. Any one who has been a folk club organiser will know all about herding cats and Johnnie deserves our grateful thanks for everything he has done for folk music especially in the Redcar and Saltburn area.

RIP

I met Marion at Saltburn FOlk Festival on 7 th August 2000, the year I won the shantyman cup in the singing competition. John was there to support and enlisted me as an MC for the festival and sundry concerts. A wonderful cheerful bloke with whom we formed a lasting bond. Over the years John became more than a festival colleague and we often laughed at the problems that the festival threw up. Along with Dave Howden, Kevin Hall, Arthur Marsden and the late Colin Kemp we formed Boomalot shanty crew one year when the Thursday festival club was a bit light on singers and we carry on the tradition looking after the big sing on the festival Sunday night.   We'll miss you John and though you didn't like the publicity of being named as the driving force, with Heather behind the festival we all know what you did to further the great music. We'll miss you greatly mate. You're a hard act to follow. Belay now mate.

Ken & Marion

So very very sad to hear of John's passing. Another of the "Teesside Greats" to have left us recently for a better place. He will be in good company and good voice with his old mates now.

I have known John since I was a child and have great memories of his warmth, friendliness and of course his humour. A true gentleman who will be sorely missed. Rest in peace John. Huge condolences to Heather and family.

Ellen

I'm sorry to say that this sad news had escaped me until yesterday when an obituary by The Wilsons appeared in the new issue of Folk NorthWest magazine. I'd known John on a fairly casual basis for over 25 years, by seeing him at such Festivals as Maghull Day Of Music and Four Fools up here in my neck of the woods. I was shocked and had no idea that he'd even been ill.
As a Club Organiser of fairly recent vintage I had the greatest respect for John and his efforts, perseverance and dedication over the decades. A gentleman with a warm, never-malicious sense of good humour, I don't think they make them like him any longer.

I wonder what will follow John's Redcar and Saltburn Festivals. It is of course up to his faithful team but they could continue as he led or leave those many we've had as memorial. Either would be a fitting tribute.
Thanks again John.

To add to Ray's post - here's the page for the Festival with a fitting tribute to John.
