I talked to a gun owner about this, and he said it could happen. However, it wouldn't have happened if the safety had been on and the gun had been in a gun rack, the way it should have been.

The article says the ammo went through the back of the driver's seat, and it's hard to picture any human doing that.

ABC News interviewed Kelly Jameson, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department in
Doña Ana County where the incident took place.
Jameson, in the interview (link in previous post),
answers questions about the placement of the firearm
on the floorbed in the back of the pickup truck,
and states that the incident is being treated
as an accidental shooting.

My favorite story of this type is the one of the frozen lake, the labrador retriever, and the hunter parking on the ice and tossing a stick of dynamite out to break the ice.

Nothing much new today.
Still no update on the dogs.
(I would think a shotgun going off THAT CLOSE to the dogs
would make the dogs freak. You disagree?)

About the old man in the driver's seat of the pickup truck:
After saving his life by stopping the bleeding, the party of deputies and paramedics sent him, not to Las Cruces nearby, but to El Paso, Texas: it's farther, but he needed critical attention.
After being in intensive care, the man was moved to a different room
at the same facility.
One of the news reports say that the man told a reporter
that next Wednesday he is scheduled to be transported
from El Paso and the University facility there,
to Las Cruces and a rehabilitation center.

It occurs to me to consider
what is left of the truck ...

In most States of the Midwest you can ONLY hunt deer with a shotgun (using slugs, no type of shot), a bow, or a muzzleloading rifle. Why? Because the States are so flat a bullet fired at the eastern state line of Illinois (for example) would drop into the Mississippi River many, many miles away. Maybe that a little exaggerated, but the flatness of these States is the reason for the weapons restrictions. Here in the mountains it's a different story. Oh, yes -- you MUST wear a defines number of square inches of "hunter's orange". Jackrabbits can get awfully big out here in The Wild West.

Leaving a loaded weapon, safety off, in the back seat with a high-energy dog is about as thoughtless as I can imagine. See, in order to be a responsible person you have to be able to envision consequences. I am glad the guy will be okay and the dog was not prosecuted. A stupid incident.

I was once 10 seconds** away from a huge van crashing into the large shop window that I had just passed. The owner had not put the handbrake on fully and what I assume were disc brakes had cooled and released their grip. And in my town the slope is imperceptable, The dog stayed in the passenger seat and had that "don't look at me" look on his countenance.

**I paced it out the next day, 10 seconds. But I would have been looking in the direction he was coming at me from, so that's OK? Which way do you jump at such an acute angle?

But nobody hunts jackrabbits with slugs. They're used for bigger game like deer and hogs. If the guy was shot with a slug, he was hunting deer, not jackrabbits. And if that's the case, he was probably hunting illegally since New Mexico has no open season for deer. The number of deer permits is limited and they are assigned to hunters by lottery.

More likely, the reporter who wrote the story was just not knowledgeable about long guns.

I did some searching, and it seems a shotgun can shoot a solid projectile called a slug. A slug can right through a car door. Slugs are not used for hunting, because they do so much damage.

I am not prepared to believe this story that the dog did it. It might be true; it might be a cover-up.

There were numerous reports from the US a couple or so decades ago, of dog owners leaving cars (of a named make) with the engines running and their pet in the back while they nipped into the local store.
When they returned they found their cars had moved off or, on a few occasions, started up when the owners came in sight - several owners were mown down as they walked in front of the cars
It was decided that when the locked-in animals spotted their owners they had jumped about the car in excitement and dislodged the starting mechanism.
One injured owner described how she has seen her vehicle racing towards her with her grinning Schizu at the wheel

The same newspaper. the Sunday Times, also reported how, during a spate of forest fires in the South of France, rescuers were finding corpses among the smouldering remains of the fires they were fighting, all dressed in swimming gear
Apparently, the method of firefighting they wre using was to hang containers underneath their helicopters, and scoop up large quantities of sea-water which would then be dropped on the fires - along with any holidaymaker who happened to be swimming at the time

Both cases of nature taking its revenge, possibly !

The shotgun — in the backseat of the pickup, along with Charlie — fired through Gilligan’s front driver’s seat. The bullet went through Gilligan’s back, breaking a few ribs and shattering his collar bone, and caused other injuries, according to the Las Cruces newspaper.

So, was he shot by a shotgun or a bullet? Shotguns don't shoot bullets. They shoot pellets. Rifles shoot bullets. Most writers refer to the product of a discharged shotgun as a "blast".

The dogs, the article says, were taken to an animal shelter.
And the owner's grown son said,
that he had to bail the dogs out of doggy jail.

Well, heck, the dogs could have been injured or killed;
will the dogs be taken away from the old man?
Will his license to carry a shotgun be suspended or anything?

Sigh. I spent several adult years living in New Mexico.
It shocked me how casual they are, out there, about dogs in particular.
They pay attention to horses, but dogs are another matter.

Not all that unusual. Dogs (and even horses) have discharged firearms "accidentally." My question is why he was driving around with a loaded shotgun in the vehicle. Even Randall Marcy, in his 1850 book on crossing the plains, noted that the most common firearms "accident" was someone mishandling a loaded gun cocked and ready to go in the wagon.

NB: I put "accident" in quotes because, like the old NRA, I contend that there are NO firearms "accidents" -- only carelessness.

the White Sands Missile Range, well into the southern part of the state.
