Subject: Review: The Loud
From: London OldMan

Back in the 70s, Terry Yarnell used to play a giant mandolin-type instrument which he called a 'Loud' - I remember it having a big sound box, and maybe six double strings.

It had a marvellous 'big' sound, like a 12-string guitar, but more wooden, more mandolin-ish.

Having I got the name wrong? Or am I spelling it wrongly? Can't find any reference to it anywhere on the www!

Thanks.

Was it an oud?

No. Usually "laud", with an acute accent somewhere. It's the western Mediterranean version of the Greek/Turkish "lavta". There is something in between called a "liauto". They are all like big bouzoukis, tending to get louder westwards and more sophisticated eastwards (the lavta player in our Middle Eastern group is Greek but plays a gorgeous Turkish one with microtonal fretting).

I knew Terry for a long time, can't remember Terry ever playing anything but a guitar, and later, a fiddle.
John and Sandra were the ones who experimented instrumentally

Lauds are pretty popular in Spain. It's pronounced a bit like the English word loud.

See Wiki. The flat back makes it more affordable than a genuine lute.

Note that all names similar to "lute" are derived from the oud, incorporating the Arabic article.

Not really a lute substitute - the tuning is quite different. It's more like a small, loud oud. The Puerto Rican cuatro does the same sort of job.
