Subject: Village Lock-ups in song? From: GUEST,Xithi Date: 12 Nov 18 - 01:14 PM Hi there, I've just been reading about these curious little buildings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Village_lock-up Quote from the wiki article: "An 1830 description of a lock-up in Taunton describes "... a hole into which drunken and bleeding men were thrust and allowed to remain until the following day when the constable with his staff of office take the poor, crippled and dirty wretches before a magistrate, followed by half the boys and idle fellows of the town."" Surely these must have been immortalised in song at some point, does anybody know any? Cheers Max |
Subject: RE: Village Lock Ups in Song From: Jack Campin Date: 12 Nov 18 - 02:01 PM We had one in my village (Newtongrange, Midlothian, Scotland) - it only had the bars taken away and got converted into an ordinary house extension a few months ago. It probably dated to when most of Newtongrange was built, the 1890s. The only musical commemoration of one I know of is the Shetland fiddle tune "Jack Broke da Prison Door" - Jack was a regular resident of one whenever he went berserk while drunk, and one time he smashed his way out. |
