Some years ago at the Ottawa Folk Festival, I heard Garnet Rodgers sing a song with the lines "It must come from the heart if you want it to work." Could someone give me the lyrics to that song?

Also, what other songs have you heard that also prevoke sincerity and truthfulness in their lyrics? This is an example: If You Don't Love Me, Why Not Confess performed by the Stumbleweeds on YouTube.

Thanks a lot, Mr. Happy. Does anyone any other songs about sincerity and truthfulness? Here's one more: Are You Tired of Me, Darling? by the Stanley Brothers on YouTube.

Not a song, but a sonnet by Edmund Spenser It was first published in 1595, so it has endured for more than 400 years.

Amoretti LXXV:

One day I wrote her name upon the strand,
But came the waves and washed it away:
Again I wrote it with a second hand,
But came the tide, and made my pains his prey.
"Vain man," said she, "that dost in vain assay,
A mortal thing so to immortalize;
For I myself shall like to this decay,
And eke my name be wiped out likewise."
"Not so," (quod I) "let baser things devise
To die in dust, but you shall live by fame:
My verse your vertues rare shall eternize,
And in the heavens write your glorious name:
Where whenas death shall all the world subdue,
Our love shall live, and later life renew."

Here is another song extolling the virtue of truthfulness. This is dedicated especially to a certain American politician: It's a Sin to Tell a Lie sung by Patti Page on YouTube.
