Watching that it strikes me as almost odd that in this day of easy to use video tools in which you can shoot to higher definition video and sound quality than that using just an iPhone, there are no passionate young wannabe broadcasters shooting anything like that for youTube or vimeo. Wonder how hard it could be for someone - say a promoter who was already putting on regular small folk acts at a regular venue - to put together a video show like that once a month!

No one could argue with the title, enjoyable , I found it very much of its time but musacally unrepresentative representing the area it was recorded in, Home counties
I was gigging a lot in that area at that time.I remember hearing fine unaccompanied traditional singers[ particularly in Sussex[ neighbouring county]
i suppose the idea was to give the impression that unaccompanied traditional singing [ of whatever standard was not happening] . I enjoyed the perfomances , thankyou

I would like to add to what Dick has said about the scene in the Surrey/Sussex area in the previous post, partly to agree and partly to disagree with what he has written.
Obviously, this night at the Shackleford club was not typical because all the performers were professional gigging musicians at the time. All of the performers on the programme was guests at one time or another at that club run by compere/organiser Lawrence Heath. However, they were all also guests at one time or another at the club which I organised in Lewes as well as at the clubs in Brighton, Eastbourne. Overall, I would say that there was little difference between the types of guests at the clubs in both counties. There are no unaccompanied singers in the programme but perhaps that is not representative. Both of us - and other organisers - would book everyone from the Copper family to Roy Harris, from Packie Byrne to Fred Jordan with plenty of other stops in between.
Where Dick does make a good point is that in some clubs in Sussex (like Groombridge run by Isabel Sutherland & Joby Blanchard and myself in Lewes) might favour more guests who represented the traditional repertoire including unaccompanied song whereas the equally long-running clubs at the Stanford in Brighton and Willows in Arundel, you would be more likely to hear a singer/songwriter. I would have thought that the idea was to entice people without a previous interest in folk music into folk clubs by presenting a selection of good quality pro and semi-pro performers.

Certainly for me the interest in hardcore trad only came after I had started going to folk clubs. I would never have made the jump from Pink Floyd to Fred Jordan in one go.

.... However, none of the clubs that I frequented had an exclusive policy and you would hear a good mix at all of them.
Tina and I did a couple of gigs at The Shackleford club. One of my memories was stirred by seeing that Fairisle jumper that he is wearing on the programme. I turned up to play wearing an almost identical jumper to Lawrence's which caused a deal of good-humoured heckling on the night.

Peter. if that is the case why not put on the Spinners, a popular group who sang songs of social comment, popular folk songs, were very professional and the type of group who did bring in new people because they were more commercial.
This clip promotes certain performers , they all gave good performances, and were worth promoting , it was very enjoyable

NOT MUCH HOPE FOR THIS LOT

Personally, I find the erm as offensive as some do "Snigger snogwriter" - both are invariably used as terms of abuse and both are unnecessary
The technique of singing with their hands cupped over their ears is as old as history - some people favour it as an aid to their singing - the singing of some who sneer at it would be helped if they used it themselves (or something similar)
Constant mockery of the term throws up barriers around an extremely useful technique (as does the degrading of taking singing seriously, as the mockery is often intended to)
Our music doesn't deserve that
