Subject: RE: Electric guitar as a solo instrument From: punkfolkrocker Date: 01 Dec 18 - 08:36 AM Positive progress...??? when I first started at mudcat about 15 years ago, the open snobbery and hostility towards anything music related depending on that new fangled electricity, was far worse than at present times... I guess a combination of slowly improving mudcat cultural enlightenment. and inescapable mortality of the older orthadox acoustic zealots... |
Subject: RE: Electric guitar as a solo instrument From: Will Fly Date: 01 Dec 18 - 08:50 AM It gets forgotten that people will make music on whatever comes to hand, and that music is never stuck in time. I remember, as a student, some chap bringing a Fender Strat to the class (this was 1963) for us to see. I'd never held one before, and it was like magic to me. Some silly snob among the female students said, "Oh, that's not a REAL instrument", before turning away with a moue of dissatisfaction on her face - a remark which we treated with the same contempt she had shown for the Strat! A great example of musicians taking advantage of new technology is the glass harmonica, invented and improved in the 18th century - with works written for it by Mozart, Beethoven and hundreds of others. People also forget that there are no rules in music. Play what you want, how you want, is all that matters. Whether what you play is a success or whether it's liked or not is, in the end, no matter. As my Irish great-grannie used to say, "Have what you will - and pay for it." |
Subject: RE: Electric guitar as a solo instrument From: Bonzo3legs Date: 01 Dec 18 - 10:57 AM I remember my wife and I doing a spot at "Sutton Acoustic" club back in the 1990s. I didn't have an accoustic guitar at the time, and used my Les Paul Junior through a small amp. The fact that my folk style was infinitely better than all of the other players seemed to annoy the MC who responded with very bitchy comments!!! |

Oh wow, you must be a really great player to be INFINITELY BETTER than all those other players with their primitive acoustic instruments, and so modest ... what a gift to have you there. how strange your visit was not appreciated. |
