Subject: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: leeneia Date: 29 Nov 18 - 02:38 PM I'm looking for sheet music or MIDI file for cakewalks, which are dance pieces from maybe 1890-1910. When I google, all I get is stuff from the Cakewalk software people. (I used Google advanced search and said -software. The first page that came up said Cakewalk Software.) A true cakewalk ought to be simpler than a rag. I am not interested in stuff by Scott Joplin in several flats with huge leaps, etc. I already know Colored Aristocracy. Can anybody suggest any more? |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 29 Nov 18 - 04:33 PM leeneia Here's a link to some at the Levy collection Cakewalks at Levy. Other sheet music repositories probably have them too, but I haven't time to check just now. But here are some results from the Sheet music consortium that you can browse through. (Both were just searches on cakewalk) Mick |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: leeneia Date: 01 Dec 18 - 02:16 PM Thanks, Mike. I already tried Levy. For some reason, the site will not only display a page of music about half size. I have used Levy often in the past, but now it is no help. Also, I was hoping for something simpler to use, like an ABC or a MIDI file. Something like Colored Aristocracy.

Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 01 Dec 18 - 02:26 PM Sheet music for Coloured Aristocracy with download option (above details). Mick |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 01 Dec 18 - 02:33 PM And here's the abc for a version from the Fiddler's Companion: Colored Aristocracy abc (looks simplified from the sheet music at a quick glance) Mick |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 01 Dec 18 - 02:37 PM And a whole Mudcat thread devoted to Origin: Colored Aristocracy with links to the tune via JCs tunefinder at least. Mick |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: leeneia Date: 01 Dec 18 - 04:06 PM Yes, but I already have Colored Aristocracy. I want new tunes LIKE it. |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 01 Dec 18 - 04:53 PM Sorry misunderstood! Abc for others might be hard to come by (my search found only 1 modent one from Australia!). But (if I count correctly) there are about 125 of the 155 sheet music entries that I linked for you above at the Sheet music consortium that are available for download. If you find some you like I'd be happy to convert them to abc for you. Mick |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: FreddyHeadey Date: 01 Dec 18 - 05:34 PM leeneia, I tried Google with -cakewalk.com too. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=-software+-cakewalk.com+cakewalks+cakewalk+sheetmusic and then clicked 'images' to see good candidates. idk if that gives you any more. Half a dozen tunes(plus duplicates) on abc http://abcnotation.com/searchTunes?q=cakewalk |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: leeneia Date: 02 Dec 18 - 06:41 PM Mike and Freddie, thank you both very much. I have a meeting tomorrow morning, and tonight I make the cookies. Tomorrow I will be following your links. |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: leeneia Date: 04 Dec 18 - 01:48 PM Now look. I went to abc notation.com first thing and searched for "cakewalk" and "cake walk." They said they couldn't find any. Then FreddieHeadey comes along and they come up with a dozen. Explain THAT, Mr. Scientist! :) Setting that glitch aside, I have no added Cosgrove's Cakewalk and Whistling Rufus to my repertoire. Cosgrove's seems to have a connection to Mudgee (a place) so it will make a nice companion to the Mudgee Waltz. |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: Jack Campin Date: 04 Dec 18 - 02:02 PM Levy works fine. Click on the "Download PDF" link for this one: Whistling Rufus You get four pages. (Just picked that because it was one I recognized in the results for a search on "cakewalk"). |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: leeneia Date: 06 Dec 18 - 01:27 PM It's probably my computer. It's getting old and developing glitches. I've been playing the Cosgrove Calkewalk. Sad to say, it fails to grip. Next, Whistling Rufus. |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: leeneia Date: 06 Dec 18 - 01:33 PM Here's a YouTube video from 1903 which I think conveys a cakewalk pretty well. It also has some history in the comments. get dressed up and strut your stuff |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: leeneia Date: 07 Dec 18 - 11:23 PM Mike, it just clicked with me, what you said about a consortium. I googled Sheet Music Consortium and found the home page. What a site! I have added to my Favorites. Whistling Rufus is coming along nicely. Another cakewalk called Chaw Roast beef shows promise. |
Subject: RE: looking for cakewalks (music style) From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Dec 18 - 12:31 AM The Wikipedia Article on "cakewalk" is fascinating. I knew Louis Moreau Gottschalk wrote music in the cakewalk style, but the Wikipedia article says that Robert Russell Bennett, John Philip Sousa |
