Subject: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Donuel Date: 04 Dec 18 - 08:50 AM How about those school buses that have exhaust pipes at about car window level. Cars have one two or four exhaust pipes, trucks have one or two, the same as people. My car has only one below the middle of the rear bumper, just like people. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Steve Shaw Date: 04 Dec 18 - 09:15 AM Oops! Exhausts used to have a 12-month warranty and last twelve months and two days. Things have improved. I've had a Ford Focus from new, seven and a half years old, 105000 miles on the clock, original exhaust still going strong. Mrs Steve has an 11-y-o MX5 that we bought used, still with its original exhaust. QuikFit will be doing their nuts. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Donuel Date: 04 Dec 18 - 09:40 AM Exhaust is mispelled. Why no outcry? * They say modern car exhaust is not the fatal hazard it used to be. Urban Legend? Carbon monoxide poisoning is only less likely in modern cars.

Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Senoufou Date: 04 Dec 18 - 10:09 AM And isn't it 'Kwikfit'? |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: FreddyHeadey Date: 04 Dec 18 - 10:31 AM Senoufou I was going to cleverly point out that you missed out a hyphen but on their logo they don't have a hyphen. It's two words ... (but not much of a gap between) Kwik Fit On their legal page they have two words, with capitals AND a hyphen Kwik-Fit ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I just assumed exaust was one of your American spellings. Sounds ok, looks weird but I can live with it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Tattie Bogle Date: 04 Dec 18 - 10:38 AM Nitrogen dioxide is supposed to be the real baddie, but isn't currently included in the UK "emissions test": but it gives our government the "right" to label diesel cars, which they once promoted as "a good thing", extremely bad, and bump up the price of diesel so that it's now over 10p per litre more than petrol. AND talking about diesel exclusion zones, running down the car manufacturers and sellers, and I could go on........! But I'm exhausted. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Iains Date: 04 Dec 18 - 10:43 AM It is only the resident pedant gets worked up over spelling and grammar. He has a history stretching back some years. If the content can be easily understood, spelling and construction is largely irrelevant. Multiple mistakes in multiple postings merely demonstrate a contempt for the audience. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Donuel Date: 04 Dec 18 - 10:59 AM Contempt as a motive is unlikely. Like everything else, ignorance should be the primary suspect. Or dyslexia ;^/ Pick up trucks in the US are modified to spew black exhaust called 'rolling coal'. WHY NOT pink exhaust or baby blue? |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Jos Date: 04 Dec 18 - 11:13 AM You could get really silly and have a different colour exhaust depending on whether the 'baby on board' is a girl or a boy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Donuel Date: 04 Dec 18 - 11:15 AM I should make an additive to gas to make everyone's exhaust GREEN. Then we all could brag we are green 8^/ |

Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Backwoodsman Date: 04 Dec 18 - 03:20 PM Pretty much the same as the cockwombles who have huge, dustbin-sized 'silencers' (which are anything but) fitted to their ancient, body-kitted Ford Fiestas and Vauxhall Novas here in the UK. As Mrs Backwoodsperson is wont to say when one of those blaring sheds-on-wheels passes by, "All wind and piss". |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Steve Shaw Date: 04 Dec 18 - 03:38 PM "I should make an additive to gas to make everyone's exhaust GREEN." That reminds me of Billy Connolly suggesting that an invisible additive should be put in swimming pools that turned the water bright purple around your arse region if you farted or peed in the water. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Steve Shaw Date: 04 Dec 18 - 03:43 PM "Exhaust is mispelled. Why no outcry?" We only jump on those eejits who see fit to pounce on other people's typos. The pompous sods invariably make tons of mistakes themselves, and having it back at them is sheer joy. So you're let off, Donuel, as you never complain. Though you did misspell "misspelled." Bwahahaha! Sorry... :-( |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Backwoodsman Date: 04 Dec 18 - 04:07 PM No you're not! ;-) :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Donuel Date: 04 Dec 18 - 04:52 PM I couldn't help it. Steve made me laugh over my misspelling misspelled. How about those cold foggy mornings when it looks like you have double the exhaust. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Donuel Date: 04 Dec 18 - 06:49 PM Decorative exhaust pipe tips are a fad over here. It strikes me like bleaching aholes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: robomatic Date: 05 Dec 18 - 12:02 AM I once shared a Volkswagen bug for cross country driving. It was a '65 corpse (carriage? body?) with a '55 engine in it that had been turped in place by a home mechanic who had a garage with a work-bay carved into the floor. Nice job. We spray painted it and did some of the other touch up work. But it had very short exhausts, just poking out under the rear end , not even passing the rear bumper. So for the next three weeks of driving if the windows were up (closed) I had no problem. If the windows were down, massive headaches. I came to the conclusion that there was a slipstream backflow that incorporated ex(h)aust gases and we were getting carbon monoxide poisoned. The driving partner whose dad had done the engine work, would have none of it. Until the last day. MASSIVE headache. I maintain to this day that I lost precious IQ points during that voyage, and that's why Im here writing mudcat mss and not a goddam contender for the Bart Simpson awards (that's what they're called, right?) |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: Donuel Date: 05 Dec 18 - 09:54 AM I bought a postumorous Simpson Darwin Award. I coulda been a contender. How about Kevlar flexible exhaust pipes that are long enough to drag behind you? |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exaust pipes From: ripov Date: 05 Dec 18 - 08:01 PM With regards to the aforementioned UK emissions standards - why is it that schools that produce students who can pass government designed tests are classed as "excellent", whereas manufacturers who produce cars that pass tests set by the same government, are called "frauds"? |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Dec 18 - 01:47 AM It seems to me that exhaust emissions from automobiles are pretty good these days, but the rednecks in my area like to have big, stinky trucks. I hadn't heard of rolling coal - that explains a lot. The area east of Los Angeles used to make my eyes water certain times during the year, especially summer - and then it would be sparkling and beautiful in winter. This seems to have improved with the air quality laws of the last forty years, but maybe it's just that I haven't been in Pasadena during smog season lately. It sure is a beautiful city when there's no smog. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: robomatic Date: 07 Dec 18 - 02:33 PM I'll never forget forty years ago riding my motorcycle on Interstate 10 across SoCal desert Blythe to San Bernardino and then down approaching Los Angeles and seeing a sky full of approaching funk and looking down at the motorcycle engine and telling it "This is YOUR FAULT!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: keberoxu Date: 07 Dec 18 - 06:00 PM Robomatic, what you term a "corpse" was called a "jalopy" in my youth. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: robomatic Date: 07 Dec 18 - 08:36 PM Thanks keperoxu. I think I was looking for the word 'chassis' and it came out corpse and I thought for some reason that was funnier. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Jos Date: 08 Dec 18 - 03:39 AM Well I thought 'corpse' meant 'decommissioned hearse', with the hint being 'body' - so rather a slow journey, probably? I'm sure it was funny when you knew what you were TRYING to say, but it seems at least two of us didn't. (Maybe it belongs in the 'What makes you laugh' thread.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Senoufou Date: 08 Dec 18 - 04:06 AM All this talk about emissions from vehicle exhausts makes me feel so smug and very lucky indeed. Where we live, right in the sticks, the air is like wine, no traffic at all bar the odd tractor, and this time of year the odd oil tanker (we have one coming on Monday to deliver our kerosene) We have our bedroom window open all night and the fresh pure air is gorgeous. One thing I noticed about London when we went down on a day trip was the poisonous air in the streets. Our throats were quite sore when we got back to our village. If I had to live in London I reckon I'd choke to death! |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: treewind Date: 10 Dec 18 - 04:59 AM I can out-smug you - my car has no exhaust pipe and is virtually silent! (Nissan LEAF, and yesterday I was pleased to find myself behind another one in my home town traffic) Relevant to original post too: buses (school or otherwise) are an ideal candidate for electric power, considering they spend much time standing still with the engine running polluting the air that the children breathe, and they don't have to go very far or very fast. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Senoufou Date: 10 Dec 18 - 05:33 AM I agree treewind, all buses could be electric and pollution-free. I may have spoken too soon about the beautiful air round here - there were a few wood-burners yesterday evening chucking out stinky smoke, but they always stop during the night, thank goodness! |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Tattie Bogle Date: 10 Dec 18 - 10:05 AM My husband just told me some statistic he'd just heard in the radio, i.e. that one woodburner emits as much (of what?) as six lorries! Our newer buses in Edinburgh all have automatic cut-out when at a stop so hopefully reducing overall emissions. My car also supposedly has it, but it doesn't work most of the time! |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Thompson Date: 10 Dec 18 - 10:40 AM Unfortunately, vehicle exhausts are a major cause of climate change. The wood-burning stove figure is mainly because people burn damp wood, peat and coal in their stoves as I understand it. The British government has a list of acceptable stoves (which "double-burn" wood) and most modern stoves are on this. Efficient stoves burn brightly with little smoke, and produce, like Mudcat at times, more heat than light. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Senoufou Date: 10 Dec 18 - 11:34 AM One or two of our neighbours burn old fence panels (complete with vestiges of creosote on them) old pallets, damp/mouldy wood from rotten branches, cardboard, their own rubbish and suchlike. Sometimes it smells as if they're cremating a body. (Could be so I suppose hee hee) They tow trailers behind their tractors loaded with this combustible material. Normally the wind here is quite strong and whisks away any smoke, but if it's a cold, still evening the pollution is pretty bad. The smoke coming out of their chimneys is often a queer orangey-brown colour, or thick black billows. Also, they all installed their wood burners themselves, and since we're all in bungalows, the chimneys aren't high enough to get the smoke away, and it descends around us all like a fog. Gosh it felt good getting all that moaning of my chest! |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Donuel Date: 10 Dec 18 - 06:05 PM O the chimneys on the carefully planned dwellings of death When Israel’s body rose dissolved in smoke through the air – To be welcomed by a chimney sweep star Turned black Or was it a ray of the sun? O the chimneys! Paths of freedom for the dust of Jeremiah and Job – Who dreamed you up and built stone upon stone The path of smoke for their flight? O dwellings of death Set out so enticingly For the host of the house, who used to be the guest – O you fingers Laying the stone of the threshold Like a knife between life and death – O you chimneys O you fingers And Israel’s body dissolves in smoke through the air! O die Schornstein 10 years ago I made a painting of the nightime chimneys of Aushwitzith illuminated smoke that formed the hebrew letter y Nellie Sachs wrote the above poem and won the peace prize today |
Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Senoufou Date: 12 Dec 18 - 04:13 AM I think the plural of 'der Schornstein' might be 'die Schornsteine' Donuel. Very sad poem. My sister has visited Auschwitz with her daughter (a student at the time) and they both cried like anything. The atmosphere was overwhelming. I know I couldn't bear to go there, it would be far too painful. |
