What to believe? Politics have a more unwavering staunch faithful than religion. The percentage of those who become atheists are still about the same as those who become independents but those who are conservative are usually cons forever. Why? I think it is the same as those who are most susceptible hypnotic subjects who retain post hypnotic suggestions the longest.

In the battle of illusion verses reality, illusion is faster. Reality plays catch up like warmth slowly catching up to August after the days are already growing shorter.

Much of political science is the science of illusion vs fact.
That's why I say politics is hypnosis. It bears repeating

Happy Holidays

Actions that we think were motivated by hate were often motivated by fear.

I believe you have that wrong way 'round.

The taught illusion of hate gives birth to fear, which by extension is also an illusion.

People could be proud that they paid back the 700 billion dollar bailout that bypassed a depression (caused by Wall St.) but they protested with a no nothing tea party. They paid with losing homes, jobs and cash and taxes.

Now when Trump takes 2.3 TRILLION for his rich tax cut, Republicans are silent. They buy the illusion that immigrants and blacks are the real problem and the illusion that cruelty is good and that America is great again.

Our reality is a belief in an illusion. Reality, what a concept.

Slavery is another form of powerlessness. WASPs are starting to feel what Jews and Blacks have felt for centuries. White slavery is a minimum wage slavery or worse. Stretched beyond the ability to survive after the results of the 2008 crash we have a glimpse of what a disabled population faces with another collapse of growth economies.

More good news; Rolling thunder will end their 33 year annual motorcycle ride through the pentagon and Washington due to Trump price increases in all the support services including Don's Johns portopotties.

Well, here' some good news for a change.

Neo-Nazi James Alex Fields Jr. was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for killing Heather Heyer in a vehicular attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, last year.

A jury sentenced Fields to one life term for the murder, along with 419 years for another nine charges and also recommended he be fined nearly half a million dollars.

We do not need to give guns to primates to see the obvious parallels to human behavior. However there are fewer primate shootings when we do not give guns to Chimpanzees. That being said mass shootings are a product of countless hours of practicing social media arguments that includes insults accusations threats and reactions to these attacks. With any kind of reinforcements in the real world the feelings of powerlessness are magnified. Compounding the problem is no real expectation of privacy anymore. There has to be a weak link in this chain of hate to break the cycle before the individual snaps. A feeling of relief from the attacks and a sense of victory can accomplish a reduction in anxiety.
This can be done via video games - The very thing that second amendment advocates blame as the cause for violent snaps. As long as we are giving guns to human chimpanzees these are the areas we are left to explore.

In society the gun debate causes a vindictiveness that ranges from not speaking with, all the way to revenge against the 'other side'.

If the NRA is so easily manipulated by Russian spies and Sasha Baron Cohen it can be manipulated by sense and sensibility.

This is all very fascinating Donuel.
There have sadly been many mass shootings over the last few years. For example, Dunblane. I don't know of any female attackers, only male. But that may just be ignorance on my part.

I'm not a psychologist, but I think the underlying catalyst might be a sense of 'alienation', where a person or group feels unaccepted, disregarded, demeaned or eschewed. This causes immense anger to build up.
I've been watching a programme about chimpanzees in a lovely centre in Dorset UK, where they live in large outdoor natural enclosures. Their group behaviour interested me very much. If an individual were to be shunned or excluded by the other chimps, often a huge rage and temper tantrum resulted, and the chimp viciously attacked every animal in sight, threw things around and broke branches. He/she had to be isolated by the keepers to protect the others and to calm him/her down.

I also found this reaction among my pupils. I once had a traveller child arrive in my class, and the others were horribly unkind to him in the playground. He finally erupted with the most amazing strength and managed to bloody the noses of several boys, rip their clothes and punch everybody within reach.

I was sent for by the playground duty staff, and persuaded him to come with me to a private room. He was incandescent with anger, but after gentle calming, he confided that he was sick of being persecuted, and his traveller parents had told him to 'get stuck in' if anyone tormented him.
I felt so sorry for him, and later picked three or four 'nicer' boys to befriend him and stick up for him. He then felt part of a group and was much calmer. Sadly, as travellers do, he moved on to another area. But I think he taught me many lessons about acceptance and tolerance.

I am looking for the common elements that lead to the mental illness of habitual mass shootings, escalating threats and civil war itself.
The warning signs should lead to a defense against runaway behavior.

Powerlessness is present in youth, existential hate groups and organic brain disease.

Senofou I was going to use you as an example where hate does not get stuck in a feedback loop. It may be as simple that female minds are not prone to the kind of competitiveness or hormones. The illness may be a guy thing

There are other habitual reactions to powerlessness. It can give rise to despair, which generates depression and even suicidal tendencies.

Or stoic passivity, which demotivates and saps any inner determination to effect change. This is defeatism.

Hate and retaliation can be supremely destructive, but are more 'positive' in the sense that they release pent-up resentment and inform the perpetrator of the oppression that their system is unacceptably repressive.

I have never fully subscribed to the Christian 'turn the other cheek' rule or 'if he asks for your shirt, give him your coat as well'. Sod that!

I suppose I am looking for an eloquent way to say powerlessness is the illusion and some forms of hate are a reaction to that illusion.

The point is that feelings of powerlessness is the very catalyst that explodes a cycle of hate to the point of revenge over time. I could turn this into a psychological formula but clarity might still suffer.
I think others have said this better.

I joke about Trump more than anyone else, it helps me.
I used to make mistakes with harsh assumptions about people because I didn't know they are not American or some other innocent mistake. Steve when you are correct you are very correct.

Mossback is full of good intentions, he heard a false alarm, that's all. Powerlessness can feel hopeless but doesn't mean we do not care.

But this illustrates perfectly that we have a habit.
Habits are powerful but defeatable.

The us tribe and the them tribe are both subject to habit.

He's doing a hell of a lot more than YOU are!

Oh yes?

Amusing.

Just like Trump: assuming facts not in evidence and/or promulgating BS made out of whole cloth with no basis whatsoever.

Or were you perhaps born with a caul?

With folks like you, no wonder its God Help AmeriKKKa

I can't do anything about it, so I might as well just laugh it off

Say what ? ? ?

Laugh yourself right into the gas chambers, fool.

Or get off your ass and do something constructive.

Or enjoy the new Trumpian Sobibor

if you aren't part of the solution, you,re part of the problem

Backwoodsman has noticed a habit of hate...

"I've lost count of the times Brexiteers have told me I should be 'arrested, marched out, and shot for treason'."

...that is out of control.

A profoundly healthy mudcatter recently wrote "(It makes me laugh) watching my country slide into a cesspit of its own making. I can't do anything about it, so I might as well just laugh it off."

The illness sets in when powerless people allow the self fulfilling habit of hate to evolve into revenge and start shooting random people to satisfy their frustration.

The habit of hate includes an element of some revenge. It may stay in that feedback loop for years but can snap at some point. There is a book called the The Power of Habit which illucidates these ideas further.
