There are countless amazing musical events, in all genres, that have been recorded for posterity. And our lives are so much richer for being able to see/hear those events again, whenever we want.

But sometimes, isn't it wonderful, that a musical event can be 'just for the moment'?

No film crews, no audio recordings, just a performer and an audience ... a beautiful, magical, musical moment in time that can never be relived or recaptured.

Those magical moments might happen in a local club, or with a couple of friends; or even with just one person, singing a song or playing a piece of music at home, with no one else there to hear it!

I had one of those experiences yesterday, a 3-hour Sunday afternoon singaround. There were just seven of us, and we shared two very large bottles of ale and lots of beautiful songs. Lonna is very shy, and I never noticed how beautiful her voice was until she sang "Wexford Carol" and "Coventry Carol" and "Good King Wenceslas." And I nearly went wild when Rich and Robyn sang "Gaudete." And Sharon sang "Miss Fogarty's Christmas Cake" and Twelve Days Home for Christmas with her usual panache. And Tom rocked the place with "Children, Go Where I Send Thee." And hey, I didn't sound too bad, either. And everybody sang so nicely when I led Gaudeamus Hodie.
And oh, the beer was good....

Sometimes we are well rewarded for our music. There are the times when you are sitting by yourself at home and playing one of your songs, when the hairs on the back of your neck go up and you finish the song, knowing that that interpretation of it was wonderful. Then there are the times when you get a completely unexpected reaction to one of your songs from an audience that transforms the song and repays you for all the times you have sung your heart out to a song circle where people are flicking through their song folders looking for their next song rather than living in the present. Not that everyone does that, of course! Just enough to raise your eyebrows!

On 1 October 1993, during the best gig I ever went to, our MC John Maughan asked Ron Kavana for permission to sing Ron's song Reconciliation. Ron almost admonished him for asking, declaring that a song only has a life when it's actually being sung. In the end they duetted on the song memorably. I still have that on a ropey old cassette somewhere.

He made some good records did Ron, but he was the best thing since sliced bread heard and seen live. Oh Ron, where did you go!

We need to be telling this to those who are addicted to their technology: out with the phones every time someone starts a song or tune: especially seems to happen in pub sessions these days, among any of general public who may be just hanging around, rather than the session participants.

Some of the phones may be recording.

Just what I meant, Guest, (Please register as a proper Mudcatter so we know who you are!) they record stuff, with dubious sound and video quality/technique, post it on YouTube without permission; does no-one any favours! Just let the music be "just for the moment", eh, for once?

Talking of "Just for the moment", we were gathered in our son's house chatting. Dad was trying to comfort a grizzly baby. He tried singing but couldn't remember all the words. So we all joined in softly. Dad was pleased to have our support and the baby quietened down and gazed at us. Magic!
