I will be in Galway in early September for a couple of days. Where do locals recommend to hear non-tourist music?

Sorry can't advise you DMcG from personal experience of Galway City. I'll ask about with the people I know out on the Connemara.

The Crane Bar is always good for music, The proprietor, Mick Crehan is a top class tin whistle player.

It's nine months away. A bit early perhaps?   Remember non tourist music won't be announced and will happen away from the public eye.


You may want to check if Tunes in the Church runs into September. Non tourist music for tourists and non tourists alike, as it were. Lovely series.

The usual pubs. Crane, Teach Coilli and all that, if that's not too touristy for a visitor, it's regular, organised and planned, god forbid.

comon , yes he is a tourist but maybe he would like get locals music in a place they go to to avoid the tourist program , when I go to Ireland and I am from Iceland , I don´t go to tourist places I avoid them , I don´t like them at all , yes I am a tourist but I like what the people , the locals do from their heart , not from a tourist program ...

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Yes, I will be a tourist, but in many places there are clubs or sessions where locals go, and ones for tourists that locals tend to avoid. The sort of thing I had in mind was a response along the lines "Sundays there is very little happening, but on Monday's XYZ is always worth trying." Nine months ahead is certainly too soon for specific events, but not regular sessions.

My personal tastes tend towards the involved-but-maybe-a-bit-unpolished rather than polished-but-so-regular-there-is-no-heart=in-it. Shows put on for tourists tend to the latter, I find. And of course tourist shows are not usually too keen on your doing a slot ...

On the subject of being too soon, though: I have some dates in 2020 for San Francisco, Sydney and Brisbane … *smile*

The problem I was getting at a bit was that regular sessions, musicians planted in the usual pubs will by definition have an element of being their for attracting, let's call them, visitors. While local musicians playing for their own amusement will do so without telling you about it, unless they know you well enough.

I would suggest it's best to rely on local knowledge, word of mouth, once there for what's happening on the day(s) rather than the pre-planned nine months ahead thing. There's a lot of nice music and song in Galway. And it's a lovely place too, very busy at that time of year though, it's a right tourist destination. ;-)

Like Liberty Boy, I’d suggest the Crane Bar as starting point - or pint, perhaps. Chat with the punters between sets should provide up-to-date information. If you’re mobile, check out Spiddal, to the West, and Kinvara, to the South.
