Subject: Obit: Colm MacLochlainn 1951 - 2022 From: Felipa Date: 25 Jun 22 - 03:33 PM Alf and Fionnuala Mac Lochlainn's (eldest, I think) son Colm died earlier this month. He'd had a cancer diagnosis in 2017 and had surgeries, but I think he got the all-clear. However, he hadn't been very well this year and then took badly ill at the end of May. Colm worked for Gael Linn and subsequently worked as a translator. He was a frequent singer at sessions and played guitar and mandolin and composed several songs. My condolences to his wife and children and grandchildren, his mother (singer Fionnuala Mac Lochlainn) siblings, other friends and family members. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Alfred 'Alf' MacLochlainn 1926 - 2018 From: keberoxu Date: 31 Dec 18 - 02:44 PM The song identified by Martin Ryan is in the DigiTrad database here. Alf MacLochlainn is included in the Oral History Collection about the 1916 Rising at Irish Life and Lore. As his birth year was 1926, Mr. MacLochlainn saw, not Easter 1916, but its consequences. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Alfred 'Alf' MacLochlainn 1926 - 2018 From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 31 Dec 18 - 02:33 PM Ah - Thank you! I knew of his death but didn’t get round to mentioning it here. A few years ago, I was at a singing session in Crusheen, south of Galway. I sang “My Son in America”, a humorous song about an errant letter. One of the session organisers asked where I had learned it. I told him my source and added “It was written by a man called Alf Mac Loclainn”. “I know!” Sez he “He’s my father!”. Colm still runs the Crusheen session. Regards. |

Patrick S. Dineen. "When I was a young man on the staff of the National Library of Ireland..." |
