Subject: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: GUEST,Frustrated Searcher Date: 09 Jan 19 - 09:38 PM I'm trying to identify a male singer/guitarist. The easiest way to describe what I recall is that he was a very heavyset gentleman who seemingly always wore a striped shirt, possibly a naval/maritime shirt. He had a beard. Sorry I can't provide more information; I don't remember what types of songs I was searching for when I came across his performances. FWIW, definitely in the folk/trad camp, not a pop star. Thanks! |

Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: meself Date: 10 Jan 19 - 01:42 AM There's a video of Hamish Imlach on youtube in which he would fit that description, if I remember correctly. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Helen Date: 10 Jan 19 - 04:16 AM Surely, Guest Frustrated Searcher could supply more useful information than this. Type of music Some song lyrics The possible/likely year(s) of recording The possible/likely country that the singer originated from. etc etc Sometimes I wonder whether this is just a new way of trolling people who have a desire to help others. Send us on a wild goose chase and drip-feed information if the searchers appear to be losing interest. Be fair dinkum about this please, Guest, and give us some real information. What artists do you tend to listen to? What types of songs do you tend to search for? Was there a reason that you were searching for these songs? Something that will trigger your memory. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: GUEST,kenny Date: 10 Jan 19 - 04:36 AM It might also help if you could at least tell us which decade he was performing in. Where did you see him perform ? Where did you "come across his performances" ? |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Johnny J Date: 10 Jan 19 - 05:35 AM Tony Jackson was a "Frustrated Searcher" too. He left the band in the huff, as I recall. ;-)) Without more information, trying to identify this "folk singer" is like looking fro "Needles and Pins" in a haystack........ |

Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: FreddyHeadey Date: 10 Jan 19 - 03:51 PM Could mudcat have a list that pops up whenever someone starts to type "I'm looking for this singer..." ;) Here, I think, are all the questions from above, plus a couple of my own : checklist when asking about an artist .... Was there a reason that you were searching for these songs\artist? (Casual question or you're losing sleep over it? You had his child? He\she is your father\mother? ...) decade\dates & age at that time gender build or description singer \ instrumentalist instrument(s) solo\group which country what accent what genre , contemporary or trad' example of similar artists to DO know example of lyrics where did you hear them : - live(club\gig\...\stadium) \ radio \mp3 \ CD \ cassette \ LP \ 45 \ 78 What artists do you tend to listen to? What types of songs do you tend to search for? Something that will trigger your memory. What have you already got from Google? Who have you already ruled out? |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Steve Gardham Date: 10 Jan 19 - 04:35 PM I've a few ideas but I'm not biting until we've got at least a where and when. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: GUEST,The OP, Frustrated Searcher Date: 10 Jan 19 - 04:46 PM It was indeed Hamish Imlach. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: meself Date: 10 Jan 19 - 05:19 PM No problem - cheers! |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: GUEST,johnmc Date: 10 Jan 19 - 05:31 PM You'll have heard " Cod liver oil and the orange juice " then. A fairly legendary song in the West of Scotland. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Helen Date: 10 Jan 19 - 06:30 PM Thanks for your list of questions, FreddyHeadey, although I'm feeling a bit cautious about including the bit about parentage or parenting. LOL Well done, meself, for identifying the singer with what I can only describe as just about the most minimalist info posted to Mudcat. You deserve a medal! A big, bearded bloke who wears stripey shirts could describe most of the male contingent of folkie singers that I have ever seen. And I have only seen a small proportion of the Oz contingent. That's not even starting on the Brits, the U.S., and all the other countries of the world which boast about having folkies in their midst. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: meself Date: 10 Jan 19 - 06:51 PM A medal? Oh, no! I mean, well, I suppose, if someone WERE to submit my case to the appropriate authorities, and they were to judge me deserving, I suppose it would be ungracious to refuse it, but really ... ! |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Tattie Bogle Date: 10 Jan 19 - 07:09 PM Out of a million or more people answering to the initial description offered by the OP, Hamish Imlach! Brilliant bit of serendipity. Goodbye Booze! |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Helen Date: 10 Jan 19 - 11:12 PM Well, maybe we need to initiate the inaugural Mudcat Medal for Service Above & Beyond the Call of Duty. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Jan 19 - 07:46 AM To meself then (no, not me!) the MMS ABCD! |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Helen Date: 11 Jan 19 - 02:23 PM ABCD - wow. Serendipitous! That wasn't intentional. Yes, it looks like the inaugural MMS - ABCD is going to meself for excellent service to the Mudcat community and to fly in/fly out Guests who post tantalisingly little information, expect miracles, and more often than not, get miracles. And, in this case, it only took meself 4 hours to achieve the miracle. Speech, speech!! |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: meself Date: 11 Jan 19 - 03:30 PM Aw, gee - well, I'm not much of a one fer makin' speeches, but - Hey! Looks like the bar's open! [drops behind lectern, crawls rapidly under curtain behind, never to be seen again]. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Helen Date: 11 Jan 19 - 03:45 PM No, no, wait! Come back! We need you for all the tantalisingly obscure music searches. You are now appointed as the Mudcat Meet & Greet for Guests and Newbies. The Concierge who tries to answer the questions or redirects the inguirer to the appropriate source of info. On second thoughts, forget that. We'll meet you at the bar. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: meself Date: 11 Jan 19 - 04:48 PM Cheers it is, then! |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Jan 19 - 07:16 PM Oh, I take back that "Goodbye Booze" then. I'll arrive via the no 37 bus. |
Subject: RE: Help identifying a singer/guitarist From: Helen Date: 11 Jan 19 - 11:02 PM I must be pished already. I can't shpell "inquirer". |
