I imagine a lot of you will have seen the excellent movie "The Favourite" by now. The Scottish song "The Metamorphosis, or the Royal Honours of Scotland" from my Embro, Embro pages will make more sense if you have...

Anything in the same, er, groove from south of the border? D'Urfey would have been capable of it but also would have had more sense than to publish it under his own name.

I seem to recall there are lots of ballads mentioning Anne in the Roxburghe and Pepys collections and others that can be viewed at UCLA in the English Ballads website. The Black Letter ballads extended into Anne's reign.

No. See "The Favourite" and you'll find out what she was famous for.

All I know from reading British books is that she's dead.

Here's a link straight to the song I was talking about. You will need to read the first link I gave to understand why the songwriter was so annoyed...

The Metamorphosis

Peter Warlock wrote a song with the lyrics:

I am Queen Anne, of whom 'tis said,
I'm chiefly famed for being dead.
Queen Anne, Queen Anne, she sits in the sun,
As fair as a lily, as brown as a bun.

A traditional verse from The Sash my Father Wore:

“Oh the Pope he had a pimple on his bum,
And it nipped, nipped, nipped so sore,
So he sent for Queen Annie
And she rubbed with her fannie
And it nipped, nipped, nipped no more”.

She gets a verse in "The Vicar of Bray":

When Royal Anne became our queen,
The Church of England's glory,
Another face of things was seen,
And I became a Tory.
Occasional conformists base
I blamed their moderation;
And thought the Church in danger was
From such prevarication.

Here's a quotation from Wikipedia:

"Anne was plagued by ill health throughout her life, and from her thirties, she grew increasingly ill and obese. Despite seventeen pregnancies, she died without surviving issue and was the last monarch of the House of Stuart."

Poor lady! When a dog is treated like this, we say she's in a puppy mill and should be freed. All this may explain why there don't seem to be any jolly songs about her.

It is strange how there are not really many anti-Anne songs if any floating about in Scotland. When you think of all the German Geordie type mentions in songs but Anne was actually monarch when Scottish independence ended.

Perhaps people felt more pity than anger towards her.
