Subject: Songs about Queen Anne From: Jack Campin Date: 16 Jan 19 - 10:26 AM I imagine a lot of you will have seen the excellent movie "The Favourite" by now. The Scottish song "The Metamorphosis, or the Royal Honours of Scotland" from my Embro, Embro pages will make more sense if you have... http://www.campin.me.uk/Embro/Webrelease/Embro/17riot/17riot.htm Anything in the same, er, groove from south of the border? D'Urfey would have been capable of it but also would have had more sense than to publish it under his own name. |

The Black Letter ballads extended into Anne's reign. |

Subject: RE: Songs about Queen Anne From: leeneia Date: 13 Apr 21 - 12:45 AM Here's a quotation from Wikipedia: "Anne was plagued by ill health throughout her life, and from her thirties, she grew increasingly ill and obese. Despite seventeen pregnancies, she died without surviving issue and was the last monarch of the House of Stuart." Poor lady! When a dog is treated like this, we say she's in a puppy mill and should be freed. All this may explain why there don't seem to be any jolly songs about her. |
Subject: RE: Songs about Queen Anne From: Allan Conn Date: 13 Apr 21 - 06:48 AM It is strange how there are not really many anti-Anne songs if any floating about in Scotland. When you think of all the German Geordie type mentions in songs but Anne was actually monarch when Scottish independence ended. |
Subject: RE: Songs about Queen Anne From: leeneia Date: 15 Apr 21 - 12:27 PM Perhaps people felt more pity than anger towards her. |
