Subject: Lyrx Help: King of the Cowboys From: Gene Graham Date: 25 May 97 - 07:35 PM A friend gave me a tape of some OLD, OLD Wilf Carter 78's and I'm having a little difficulty transcribing the lyrics. Just can't make out some of the words. Unlike Bill Carlisle - I could use a LITTLE HELP! KING OF THE COWBOYS Recorded by Wilf Carter (a.k.a. Montana Slim) Listen awhile to my story. Born a lad from the wide open plains, Who has won a great name the world over, Pete Knight to the rodeo came. He was raised at Crossfield, Alberta, Just a little cow town in the west. At last (* unclear ...) a bronco His feet is never at rest. He took a real love for the saddle, Like most of us boys in the west. He's one big cowboy a-ridin'. On Sundays his feats was the best. One day he cornered a bronco Using a sack for a blind. Back on the saddle, pull away the blind. Well, cayuse, let's see you unwind. Laughing, he made it a practice Each day a bronco to tame; And now he's the King of the Cowboys To ever set foot on the range. He's come out of the chute a-kickin', Both feet high in the manes, While the bronc done his best to unload him, But the hoss never lived he can't tame. Riden in all of the Stampedes I've gone north, south, east and west At the World's Fair at Chicago Won the world bronc-riding contest. But Pete, like all other cowboys, A girl came into his life. He took her hand at the altar And made her his loving wife. But Canada's proud of her cowboys Who has won great honor and fame. We'll take off our hats to the king of them all, Pete Knight from the Alberta plains. |
Subject: RE: Lyrx Help: King of the Cowboys From: Peter Timmerman Date: 26 May 97 - 03:03 PM Dear Gene, never thought I could help the master. My old tape of Wilf Carter has a slightly different set of lyrics (which I could transcribe if you like (things like "Pete Knight, king of rodeo fame" in the second line). As far as I can make out, the line you are looking for in my version is: "And lest he was out 'mongst the broncos, it seems he was never at rest". It could be "unless" he was out, but I think it is "And lest". Yours, Peter |
Subject: Lyr Add: PETE KNIGHT, KING OF THE COWBOYS From: Peter Timmerman Date: 26 May 97 - 05:50 PM Dear Gene, What the hell? From Wilf Carter: 50 Golden Years. The line I can't get is the one about Sunday. In my version, it can't be "his feats". I have tried to get the consonants down, but it can't be right. Yours, Peter
PETE KNIGHT, KING OF THE COWBOYS [Yodeling verse]
Listen awhile to my story 'bout a lad from the wide open plain.
He was raised at Crossfield, Alberta, just a little cowtown in the west.
He took a real love for the saddle, like most of us boys in the West.
One day he cornered a bronco, using a sack for a blind [Yodeling verse]
That day he made it a practice each day a bronco to tame
He'd come out of the chute just a-kickin' both feet high up in the mane [Yodeling verse]
He's ridden in all the Stampedes a-goin' north, south, east, and west.
But Pete, like all other cowboys, a girl came into his life.
But Canada's proud of her cowboy who has won great honor and fame. [Yodeling verse] |
Subject: RE: Lyrx Help: King of the Cowboys From: Gene Graham Date: 26 May 97 - 06:48 PM Hi Peter and THANKS!!! I think you've solved my MISHEARD LYRIX line. (And lest he was out ‘mongst the broncos; it seems he was never at rest.) ...I am PRETTY SURE that on my version - it is "FEATS" But I will give it another 20 or 30 LISTENS...... AND I "Purt Near" wore out my ears (and the wife's) on the first 20/30 times. Thanks again!
