The one that did it for me was the J200 on the "Nashville Skyline" album.
I didn't know guitars of this quality existed.
And then, also, The Combolins of The Corries on the cover of "Strings and Things".

Not really in the same league as the great harp of Ur or the organ of Notre Dame.

Cheap Trick - way back then they were known for completely impractical bonkers guitars...

Davy Graham's Gibson J45, firstly on the cover of the "The Guitar Player":

The Guitar Player

And then on the "Folk, Blues & Beyond" album:

Folk, Blues & Beyond

I bought its cheaper equivalent, the Epiphone Texan, in 1966, and sold it 40 years later.

The cover of Muddy Waters at Newport. I believe the guitar actually belonged to John Lee Hooker.

I read that when the photographer, Burt Goldblatt, asked Muddy to pose for a picture right after he came off stage and, since he'd already put the red Tele in its case, he borrowed John Lee's archtop for the photo.

Although I alluded to a guitar at the start, I thought the thread would mention many other
instruments. The focus (largely) on fretted ones suggests they have an allure denied the others -or else not many people who respond are players of other instruments.
I suspect the former.

Does anyone else remember Jim Couza's Kitchen Sink (stainless steel) hammered dulcimer? He threatened to play Handel's "Water Music" but actually played something calypso-ish when I saw him - the tone was remarkably like steel pans. I can't find an online image, sadly.
