Subject: DAS BOOT reboot [well.. sequel..] From: punkfolkrocker Date: 03 Feb 19 - 01:31 PM Just found out it exists and will be broadcast very soon on Sky telly... The original was one of the best mini series ever... let's see with this one...??? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot_(TV_series) Here's a quote for all the old male grumpies.. "..the series ties in with the Me Too movement, describing the series as "[going] a step further than the film did" by adding the Resistance storyline, stating, "[it] gives a chance to bring in strong female characters." |

Subject: RE: DAS BOOT reboot [well.. sequel..] From: robomatic Date: 05 Feb 19 - 10:05 PM I got a chance to see this. I think it made a dog's breakfast out of the original, even if one regards it as being a totally different story, which it is, it does not have the bite and sea salt of the original. All it does have is a snatch of the original theme music. Of course, your mileage may vary. |
Subject: RE: Twilight Zone reboot [well.. sequel..] From: Donuel Date: 06 Feb 19 - 04:58 AM Here comes a new series of the Twilight Zone as well |
Subject: RE: DAS BOOT reboot [well.. sequel..] From: Thompson Date: 06 Feb 19 - 06:55 AM The whole point of the original was that its heroism came from ordinary men acting under brutal orders and staying decent still. Adding a Resistance element, to my mind, negates that - the whole point of the Resistance - in whatever occupied country - is that their heroism comes from killing the occupiers, even if that causes their own village and the nearest five to be wiped out in reprisal. A totally different philosophy. I highly recommend the original series. One of the best series ever made. Just about to watch the first series of Treme when it arrives from the secondhand shop. I've heard varying reports of it - raves and ho-hums. But anything made by the people who did The Wire gets a look from me. |

Subject: RE: DAS BOOT reboot [well.. sequel..] From: Charmion Date: 06 Feb 19 - 05:55 PM Indeed, Mrzzy. Since when was Das Boot a television series? The one I saw is a German film made for the cinema by Wolfgang Petersen in 1981. Real submariners (and I know some) say it is more than a little too true to life as they knew it in diesel-electric boats. Oh, I see. It's a remake -- but no! A sequel! This time, with the story extended to include the submariners' female relatives. Because God forbid we should ever have a drama without a "love interest". The Guardian's reviewer says that Das Boot was not a film that was crying out for a remake, even a good one. I'm with him. |
Subject: RE: DAS BOOT reboot [well.. sequel..] From: punkfolkrocker Date: 06 Feb 19 - 06:14 PM The original was mini series which was cut down in duration to be released in cinema's as a movie. There were at least 2 versions of the movie - shorter and longer... This was not uncommon practice with expensively produced European mini series... |
Subject: RE: DAS BOOT reboot [well.. sequel..] From: punkfolkrocker Date: 06 Feb 19 - 06:15 PM btw.. the new series is now available to watch in SKY boxsets. |

Subject: RE: DAS BOOT reboot [well.. sequel..] From: punkfolkrocker Date: 07 Feb 19 - 08:09 AM Last night I sampled the opening scenes very quietly - wife upstairs asleep.. depth charges might have disturbed her... Looked good enough until an abrupt cut to female characters on dry land... I'll give it the benefit of the doubt..... But recently there have been some potentially excellent war movies undermined by cross cutting from brutal war scenes to distracting women back at home sentimental domestic melodrama... That ruins the focus, intensity, and momentum of the basic war is hell drama... |
