I'm fairly new to Mudcat, and so far I have seen only Americans or United Kingdom citizens. Are there any Mudcatters from other places? Eastern or more Southern countries?

Most songs are also either English or Gaelic and I wonder if there are any other songs in different languages. Say Chinese, for example.

Hi! I grew up in Cote d'Ivoire, if that helps. They called me European there, as in, These Europeans are from the United States.

A great pity, this forum would benefit very much (on both sides of the line) from a wider cultural and social input - Brexit's going to help that I'm sure !!!!!

French and German stuff gets posted regularly. I've posted about Turkish and Hungarian stuff. The only discussion I can recall about Chinese material one I started about the "Dance of the Yao People". We have one poster who knows a lot about Indian folk music but rarely talks about it, and another who's very enthusiastic about calypso. We could certainly do with opening up a bit: African music is one area that I don't think has ever been a topic.

Would it be helpful if we had a tread that could be regularly used for people looking for Non European and hard to get material ?
We have hundreds of digitised albums and radio programmes of world music which I'd be more than happy to share with anybody interested (via PCloud)

One hard to solve problem is character sets - tedious but feasible to write portably in an extended Roman script like Turkish or Vietnamese; anybody's guess what will happen if you post in a different character encoding, the forum engine wasn't designed to handle that in a browser-independent way and people have tried all sorts of incompatible tricks over the years. Even Russian can't be done reliably; Chinese is much more difficult. (Also needs a moderator who can read it).

Some Israelis, some from Africa, at least one from Argentina. Oh, and don't forget the New Zealanders. I keep the membership roster, and I'm amazed where people come from. We haven't heard from the guy from Shanghai lately, but he used to post a lot.

Off to New Zealand early March with Singer songwriter Angie Wright who will be seeking out clubs to sing at.
Lots allover both north and south island to chose from So must be lots of performers and likely Mudcatters.

OK a bit of an anecdote here (I need to get this off my chest): I put emphasis on Chinese because I realised at random one day that while I know a fair handful of folk songs from the UK I didn't know any Chinese folk songs.

So I'm ethnically Chinese and grew up in a Cantonese speaking community, so I keep getting told that I should know a few Chinese songs and there is no excuse even if English is my first language.

Then it got to a point where everyone would say "oh I know this song!" And I'd just look lost whenever someone played a tradition song at school assemblies. So yeah, it would be nice to know a bit more about songs in other parts of the world. Does anyone know a good site to start?
